How long do you typically use a water bottle/tumbler before you wash it?

Starting with a newly cleaned, reusable container, until you disassemble and scrub all the parts with soap.

6+ months đź«

I usually clean it once I can no longer ignore the pink scum and black mold growing in it 🙊

…… yup - came here to say “when I notice the black stuff”.

I appreciate your honesty, and I'm not far behind. I'll scratch off build up sometimes and easily go months. Washing it is probably a similar frequency to getting my haircut.

Wash them???

ReticulatedPasta@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 155d (2 replies)

Mold and bacteria can grow in it within a day or two, even if it's not visible. I hand wash mine once every week or two. I also sanitize it regularly by pouring boiling water in the tumbler (it's metal) when I make tea, then leaving the hot water in for about 10 minutes.

dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 155d

that's probably bad, huh?

Interstellar_1@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 155d

What if I'm very regularly using it for tea?

Pika@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 155d

I don't deep clean mine unless its needed

I usually just rinse it out and call it a day.

Heikki2@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 155d

Typically I rinse it out daily and bout 1/week actually scrub it with soap or put it in the dishwasher

About 16 years and counting

Asking because the tumbler I use has a lot of little parts, so I easily go weeks between washing. I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than me shares a good reason why I shouldn't do that, because I feel a bit self conscious about it, but not enough to frequently wash.

idiomaddict@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 155d

It’s fine until it’s not, but you can do a lot to combat growth by rinsing it with vinegar and boiling water, then letting it fully dry before using it again once or twice a week

i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 155d

I wash the parts my mouth touches pretty regularly. The other bits, especially if the don’t get backwash? Maybe a few times a year the whole thing goes in the dishwasher. Disassembly and careful hand washing? Bitch, you’re a water bottle. You don’t get that!

Vanth@reddthat.com · 6 pts · 155d

I only get dishwasher safe coffee tumblers and I wash them daily. I have enough respiratory goo without adding mold to the mix.

scoobford@piefed.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 155d

Honestly I think its been years. There's some hard water on the lid, but no traces of mold or anything like that. It also tastes and smells normal to me.

thesohoriots@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 155d

If we’re talking for water drinking only? Rinse out each day. Wash every other day. If I put coffee in, full wash each day.

ieatpwns@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 154d

I use a metal thermos and I go 1 week then I soak with cafiza and boiling water for a few minutes

everyday.

infinitevalence@discuss.online · 3 pts · 155d

1 day, because I try to run the dishwasher every day anyway.

YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 154d

Prolly once a week.

disregardable@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 155d

Not too long. Like once a week or every other week. What happens is I forget and leave water in it, and then I’ll wash it.

sic_semper_tyrannis@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 155d

I can go a few months. I drink one big one a day and leave the cap off overnight until I refill it in the morning. Leaving the cap off really helps keep the mold away

Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 155d

Every couple of days I will squirt some dish soap in there with water and give it a thorough shake. Every week or so I actually disassemble it for a proper clean.

EverXIII@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 154d

Once a month. The tap water quality in Austria is excellent. I have a SIGG aluminium thermo bottle. Normally I leave it overnight with one Kukident tablet and some citric acid powder inside. Next day its ready for the whole month.

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 2 pts · 155d

I clean mine whenever I start to see a visible crust/film form around the spout I drink from. It's just for water, so that's pretty much the only part that gets nasty.

Nemo@slrpnk.net · 1 pts · 155d

I wash it whenever it's in my hand and I'm near a sink, so at least once a day when it's in active use.

The real question is how often do I dty it?

AstroLightz@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 152d

After I use it each time??
