If the parent likes the kid for who they are, and is just happy to have a great relationship with another independent human, that's great.
But, sometimes the parents are obsessed with having a kid who they can mould in their own image. They insist, for example, that the kid become amazing at football, because they never made it as a football player but through their kid they can live their own dreams vicariously.

If they are actively going for a 4th, then he's done something right. Raising 3 kids, with an unhelpful husband would be enough to put most women off having a 4th. Hell, even with a helpful husband!
The scary thing is that it really seems to be the case that having a kid changes your brain, at least for most people. People who weren't sure they wanted kids become completely different people who are absolutely obsessed with their kids.
That's probably a good thing from an evolutionary point of view, but it's freakish to see it happen. It's also sometimes a tragedy when it doesn't happen and someone who was ambivalent about having kids is not thrilled with having a kid when it happens.
This kind of comment is like a copy paste. Yes you might have got brainwashed. So many corporations want you spend money on them, not on your family because "you deserve it".
The real brainwashing is the idea that happiness only comes from having a family. In fact, attaching your happiness to anything external (i.e. the idea that happiness can only come from some set of circumstances, whether it be “having a family”, or having material wealth, or “that dream job”, etc), you’re gonna have a bad time and suffer quite a bit.
The whole idea of “happiness = having nuclear family” is a particularly western concept (although you see it in all parts of the modern world today) that is relatively new in human history.
This is anecdotal of course, but I have been single most of my adult life, and have never been happier. Don’t want kids, open to marriage if it’s right.
My friends who went the whole “get the house, get the job, get the family” are some of the most miserable people I know, and I feel bad that society/parents got to their heads that that is the only way to live life. Of course, there are plenty of people with families who are perfectly happy and content, and that is perfectly OK too.
A big issue with this kind of thinking is that we get miserable people only having kids because that’s what society says is successful, and not because they legitimately want kids, and then you get kids raised by people who don’t want to be parents. Which of course is never a good thing.
Although the remark about bragging suggests that this guy is unaware of the existence of other standards, which is something he can be legitimately mocked for.
Why are you taking offense to someone saying your lifestyle sounds terrible to them? They're not saying you must be unhappy, just that they don't want to live that way.
I don't want kids, and I'm sure those with kids that they wanted are very happy, and I'm glad there are people for whom that is a happy life because it wouldn't be to me.

It’s a question of figuring out who and what you are. What defines you and gives you purpose as an individual vs tryimg to stuff all of that into a role that leans heavily on another human being doing that for you.
