I had an ex who worked in this field, she went to mortuary school and worked in mortuaries, before that she worked in organ transplant. She went into the field because of a combination of personal tragedy (a close one passing away at an early age) and seeing how delicately the mortuary handled the event.
Anyhow, she and I would talk about it often. One of the things she would note on, wasn’t that it was sexual based things men would do (besides general office sexism coming from men on occasion), but more about the level of respect they showed the deceased. Crude Comments they’d make about their weight, features etc…
So I think it just depends and it would be difficult to verify these other claims because the “victims” are deceased and most things related to it seem to be anecdotal.
I’m also not going to google necro in anyway
(Also yes, she was kinda emo/metal an had some pretty sick tattoos)
seeing how delicately the mortuary handled the event
I sure wish I'd had this experience with the funeral home I picked out when my dad died. I called them to arrange to pick up his body, and the answering service was AI and obviously so. I gave them his name and the voice read it back to me to confirm it as "Robert common name R-O-B-E-R-T, Smith common name S-M-I-T-H". Then the owner ghosted me for more than a week and only delivered the urn with the ashes in the night before the internment at 8:00, left it outside and split before I could talk to him. 8 grand well spent.
DoorDash getting in the mortuary services game huh?! Those rascally innovators, wonder what they'll innovate next!
All jokes aside, I should add, that fucking sucks, and is real gross, and I'm sorry you had to pay through the nose for the privilege of experiencing such a tasteless money-grab. Yuck.
pay through the nose for the privilege of experiencing such a tasteless money-grab
My father wanted us to get the cheapest option when he passed and then to spend the money on a party instead.
We obliged.
Well, it turns out that once you go under a certain price, it also starts getting tasteless, even if it's cheap.
The guy showed up. Nice black suit that is too large for him. Wondering where he got that.
After accessing the situation (a corpse on the first floor) he then asks if we could help him carry the corpse down the stairs.
So we do, and following his direction holdning my father by the arms as we try to solve the "sofa problem" with my father's corpse in my childhood home staircase.. he ask us to shift to the shoulders to avoid breaking his arms off around the corner. As we finally get my father on a rolling stretcher, he asks if we could get him dressed quickly before the stiffness sets in. As we do it, my dead father rips a nasty dead fart.
Exactly how he had always wanted it.
Personally I actually enjoyed the process of having to be the one to carry him out of the house feet first instead of having a stranger do it. But other than that, I would advise anyone to not ask for the cheapest option.
I've gotten to experience some bargain basement mortuary services myself - and sidenote, I swear, people say Americans have no sense of culture?! Please!
We got to enjoy a mortuarily-approved ($$$) small plastic bin for the remains in question in our case, as well as a quiet little moment of our own on the wee spot on the (public access 😅) coast she favored. Anyway, with ours ending up more Lebowski than Tucker and Dale lol.
We weren't asked to help carry, at least. Yeesh homie.

True. Humans only become valuable once they are dead.
They only say you were a good person once you are dead, say you were too young, they go "if only we knew, they seemed fine" if you kill yourself, then go to imvestigate, once you are already dead.
How many writers were ridiculed and rejected, before becoming famous AFTER their death?
Once you are more like an object, once you have no more feelings, is when they start actually valuing you for what you were.
Same as how people will value their cars, or precious things more than people.
Same as how people romanticise native americans, years after they were almost exterminated completelly (while mostly treating those still alive like shit).
Shitty pay, crappy hours, being surrounded by the dead all the time... You either gotta love the job or end up loving the dead...
Some jobs need to be done, but who's to do them? Can one be completely sane and handle this kind of life without issue for years on end?
Most of the people employed tell themselves it's just a job and spend their time dodging the reality of handling the dead all the time, but a few.. well.. they go all in.
Normal is a state of mind that has us come to grips with that which is beyond our control.
My wife was in the funeral industry for a while and studying mortuary sciences. She says she left because it was too depressing being pressured to upsell grieving families all the time.
Let it be known, if it is too costly to shape my ashes into a spear and shoot it into the heart of the sun, or to build a statue of me Conan-posing on a throne of skulls surrounded by scantily-clad babes, just put me in a coffee can with some fireworks and light the fuse
There is a lesson here. Have these conversations today with your loved ones about final arrangements. I promise you that many of them would rather be buried in a casket from Costco and have the money spent on literally anything else.
This is especially true if they're going to be cremated.
I'm guessing it's hard to come by reliable stats. It's on the same level as priests abusing children, the cover-up would be extensive. But, it's even harder, because the corpse can't testify in court, or make a YouTube video.
I just meant in modern times is it a wide spread problem that morticians are fucking the dead. You think that shit would hit the news if it was is all.
So, the closest thing I've had to a childhood hero is Spock from the 60s Star Trek show. As I've grown older and more aware of of the world around me, I've realized elevating rationality to a virtue by itself isn't enough to form a coherent ethos. In fact, I think individuals are actually very bad at rationality. Everyone who puts rationality on a pedestal, from Zizians to SBF to Reddit atheists to Elon Musk to Randian libertarians, is really just forgetting how subjective rationality can be.
I firmly believe that compassion is just as important as rationality when it comes to building strong, honest societies. You need both. We want ethics that are internally consistent, sure, but rationality and internal consistency don't themselves give ethics purpose.
Putting aside the discussion about bodies and objects, the primary concern is consent - which also applies to objects anyway. Would you steal a dead person's wallet "because they don't need it anymore"?
Objects can't consent at all and they never could, permission from an object to act on it sounds exactly like why the right think the left has gone crazy.
Biology and philosophy absolutely do not disagree. Some parts of philosophy, yes. Biologically they are a pile of complex organic matter that is unbinding.
And calling people objects is why the right is crazy.
If a person drowns and has no heartbeat, is it okay for you to have a quickie with them before the paramedics arrive to save him? Clinically they're dead, so... by your logic, they're an object, and never had the ability to consent in the first place, so quickly fucking them up the arse should be a-okay, right?
Or is there like a timer you have for when a person goes from a person to an object, which then retroactively never had personhood anyway? Is it just time, or is it temperature, or as soon as the smell sets in? Some people have been clinically dead for half an hour in cold water before being resuscitated, the cold helping protect from brain damage. And some people smell like dead bodies while alive.
The object never has agency. The person does. This edge case is a fine one, but only suggests that the person is dormant, not gone, and can be returned to life. If a body is in a morgue for a week, that ain't going to be a possibility.
Yeah. People aren't objects. Even if human remains were, you'd have a hard time arguing when a person stops existing without "well once they've rotted for a week, they're definitely not alive." yeah no shit
What do you mean never? When they were alive they could consent. Why does that change when they die? Just because someone is incapacitated through death, doesn’t give us the right to rape them. When consent is not given it is presumed you don’t have it.
When alive, the body was a person. They are not incapacitated through death, they dead. Gone. The person ceases to be and only the object and memories remain.
There was some (mildly) famous case, I think a book was written about it, of a woman who was a necrophiliac and worked at a morgue. There was a big reddit thread about it years ago.
If that's actually the reason then I must be doing pretty good mentally because it would've taken me a while to think of that, not a "we all know because it's obvious" tier thing
A father takes his five year old to the high school principal and says that he'd like to enroll him. The principal says that little John is goign to have to prove he can handle the work. Principal writes an algebra problem and shows it to the lad. John answers it without using a pencil. He asks some history and political questions. John nails them all.
Turns to the father. "This last question is to see if he has the emotional maturity we expect of our students.
"Johnny, what's a four letter word that ends in U-N-T and means a woman?"
"Aunt."
"Congratulations. Johnny can come to high school."
As they walk home, dad says to Johnny, "I'm so proud of you. I know I would have messed up that last question"
If you'd fleshed yhat out into an actual argument you'd likely have realized that you've no leg to stand on.
The only way that carries over for a conparison, regardless of your conclusion/evaluation is if the numerator (the total amount of income) is larger for men than it is for women such that the denominator (the number of people in the partition) cannot make up the difference.
If you've got six pears and your parents have twelve, then you're equal on pears. If you've 6 lemons and they've 20, they each have almost 2 lemons for every single one you have. Ratios are designed for meaningful relative comparisons given that the dimensions/units on both sides of the relation agree. Their rational components are not.
The premise was that there is a preference to hire women over men. The fact is that 66% of the workforce is male. Where is the preference?
We have no information about applicant ratios which would be helpful. So the conservative estimate is 50:50 until we know more. But in any case, the current data give us no indication for a preference for women that was claimed in this post.
well now I'm upset I haven't smelled a body in decomposition before ☹️ (if there is a God, I hope he prints this off and confronts me with this when I die)
but I assume a morgue preserves the corpse well enough that I don't think it will be too much of an issue
now that you say it, I have smelled decomposing animal bodies before many times - but maybe not a human corpse 🤔
In the early stages there are a lot of fecal smells.
I would be very interested in being a pathologist or dealing with corpses, I think I'm better suited to that work than the average person - however, a lot of that work involves court testimony and working with the government, and I'm just not interested in having a job where public testimony is a major part of it or where I'm involved in the "justice system" (mostly because of the corruption and the feeling that my job would put me in morally compromised positions, and I just couldn't handle that).

Soulg@ani.social · 61 pts · 134d
If that's actually the reason then I must be doing pretty good mentally because it would've taken me a while to think of that, not a "we all know because it's obvious" tier thing

It's mechanically difficult for women to do it since corpses don't have blood flow. Much more creativity needed.

Their rational components are not.
jeffep@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 133d
The premise was that there is a preference to hire women over men. The fact is that 66% of the workforce is male. Where is the preference?
We have no information about applicant ratios which would be helpful. So the conservative estimate is 50:50 until we know more. But in any case, the current data give us no indication for a preference for women that was claimed in this post.
Get some sleep!

jeffep@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 132d
You're implying here that the poor bosses have to hire men for some reason beyond their control, while they would really like to hire women instead.
The one data point that would support that it's applicant ratios as I already mentioned. We don't have that afaict.
Get some pizza

Have you smelled a body in decomposition before (basically all of them are in some stage of decomp)?
dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 0 pts · 133d
well now I'm upset I haven't smelled a body in decomposition before ☹️ (if there is a God, I hope he prints this off and confronts me with this when I die)
but I assume a morgue preserves the corpse well enough that I don't think it will be too much of an issue
now that you say it, I have smelled decomposing animal bodies before many times - but maybe not a human corpse 🤔
