Kids show from the 60s. Very fitting for Melania lol.

It was also on Cartoon Network in the 90's and Boomerang in the early 2000's.

TastehWaffleZ@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 131d (5 replies)

And a movie from 2000

fartographer@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 130d (4 replies)

Oof. That movie was a hard watch when I was a kid. I added it to my collection recently, thinking that I was too young to appreciate it, but I still haven't been able to finish watching it.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 130d (3 replies)

i went with friends to watch it in the second run theater back in the day. we did bad movie nights all the time and would make fun of them like mst3k and it was great. no one else was in the theater so we got to play mystery science theater in a real theater! it was great! we even brought a pizza and had ditched school, it was wonderful.

the movie was so bad we ran out of stuff to make fun of (like, we had to start repeating stuff to make fun of) after 45 minutes so we started playing tag. we had another hour of that theater being ours and we were going to use it.

fartographer@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 130d (2 replies)

Did you know that you can rent a theater? Back when I did it, it was relatively affordable: about $200 for 2.5 hours. I went with a small group of friends and we played Halo

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 130d

it is very, very tempting but i'd rather sink the money on getting a better home theater.

great for a medium group of friends though, as long as they don't mind me bringing in a cuban buffet (the shack i wanted to buy for my own and turn into an ice creamery, it is now a cuban restaurant i will make them cater)

Lemmy user base is older than i expected

veroxii@aussie.zone · 31 pts · 131d (19 replies)

I think a big chunk of us are gen X. We used BBS forums, Usenet, then slashdot. Then it went mainstream. Move to digg. Move to Reddit. It keeps getting ruined. Now we're here but I guess at some point we'll migrate again. Nothing is permanent.

vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 131d (13 replies)

Hey now some of us are older Gen Z. But I grew up around a lot of old tech so I'm weirdly more similar to millennials and Gen X in some regards on that front.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 130d (12 replies)

next time you see your parents give them a hug for raising you right

also the tv. the tv doesn't get enough hugs and i'm sure it's sad.

vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 130d (11 replies)

I was raised by my grandmother, my biological fathers a rapist (I know from experience) and my mother is fucking crazy due to untreated bipolar disorder. Also yes TVs don't get enough appreciation.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 130d

apologies, hug your grandmother. and your tv.

bajabound@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 131d

I'm glad to find out I'm not the only one. I took pretty much the same path. Can't forget many thousands of hours spent on IRC.

Grail@multiverse.soulism.net · 2 pts · 131d

You should move to piefed next

Machinist@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 130d (1 reply)

Slashdot represent!

tomiant@piefed.social · 1 pts · 128d

I'll give you a pity upvote. There you go buddy.

I hang out on FARK btw, we should hang!

tomiant@piefed.social · 1 pts · 128d

gen X. We used BBS forums, Usenet, then slashdot.

Yeah it's weird but I get that exact feeling here sometimes. Some shit I get away with here would fly in the 90's maybe early 00's but def not on the mainstream socials. I find myself both pleasantly and worriedly surprised.

It keeps getting ruined. Now we’re here but I guess at some point we’ll migrate again. Nothing is permanent.

We are the trailblazing swarm of locusts.

WhatsHerBucket@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 131d (4 replies)

This was before my time. But there is a pretty wide range of users here, I’ve noticed.

tomiant@piefed.social · 5 pts · 131d

Gen X local bar.

JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 pts · 131d (2 replies)

Have you ever seen the movie they made in like 2000? It's interesting to say the least.

WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 131d

They actually filmed that in the town I live. I still haven't bothered to watch it though.

WhatsHerBucket@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 131d

No! I’ll have to put it on the list.

smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 131d (8 replies)

Even old farts can use new tech.

expatriado@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 131d (7 replies)

new tech is more user friendly than old tech, so i don't see why not

"PC LOAD LETTER" just means it wants woke paper, but doesn't want any if that nancy Euro A4 shit.

tomiant@piefed.social · 1 pts · 128d

But old tech was mesmerizing, luring you in like the song of a siren or some shit.

tomiant@piefed.social · 4 pts · 131d (2 replies)

I am so glad I missed this 60's reference. That means I'm young!

Rothe@piefed.social · 2 pts · 131d (1 reply)

It is also not really a reference that is widely known outside of the US (or North America).

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 130d

really? it was such a fun cartoon. like felix the cat. y'all missing out.

RedIce25@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 131d

I think I remember seeing the live action movie when I was a kid, and that's the only reference I have of the characters

Rentlar@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 131d

I think I saw a Rocky and Bullwinkle pinball Machine at an arcade in my metro area (Surrey Central City Fun Park)

Furbag@lemmy.world · 23 pts · 131d (19 replies)

She still has a heavy Russian Slovenian accent/intonation despite many years living in America, and her voice is reminiscent of Natasha, one of the villains from Rocky and Bullwinkle who along with Boris were stereotypical Russian caricatures created for a cartoon that aired during the cold war.

Jiral@lemmy.org · 20 pts · 131d (1 reply)

Slovenian. Slovenia was not only never part of Russia, the Soviet Union but not even the East Block. It was part of Yugoslavia which was block free. It's a beautiful country, doing fairly well too and they got rid of Melania which is a plus.

Slovenian might be also the most distant Slavic language to Russian, it is Slavic though of course.

Furbag@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 130d

You're right, my bad. I corrected my original post. Cheers.

TimeNaan@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 131d (7 replies)

She's Slovenian.

Furbag@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 130d

Thanks, corrected the original post to reflect that.

xenophobes don't have time for details like that

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 11 pts · 130d (3 replies)

We don't hate her because she foreign, we hate her because she's Eva Braun.

nsrxn@mstdn.social · -5 pts · 130d (2 replies)

so stop being a xenophobe and stick to substantive issues

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 130d (1 reply)

It's not because she's foreign, we like foreigners. She's getting shit because she's a goldigging MAGA whore, at best. At worst, shes a pedophile Russian intelligence agent, working with pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

All of that is fair game for vicious, relentless bullying, and anyone supporting her deserves the same treatment.

nsrxn@mstdn.social · -1 pts · 130d

bully away

leave the xenophobia for fascists

I'm actually rather astonished that her accent is so heavy and her diction is so stilted, after living in the US for 30 years. It's as if she doesn't have to speak to anyone in English. She also seems to have trouble pronouncing words correctly, even when they are written for her.

sturmblast@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 130d

She has no friends

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 6 pts · 130d (1 reply)

For years, her and Barron spent most of their time with her parents, also illegal immigrants, and they all spoke Serbian. Word was that when Barron started school, he could barely speak English, and he spoke it with a Slavic accent.

mattyroses@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 130d

They speak the Slavonian dialect of Serbo-Croatian.

Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 130d (3 replies)

Hey? If you don’t have any friends or you don’t have anything to say, how do you get to know how to speak foreign language?

gramie@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 128d (2 replies)

I already speak English, French, German, Sesotho and Japanese. Do they count? I have also taught ESL and married a Japanese woman. I know something about accents and fluency.

Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 127d (1 reply)

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean you. I meant that mail-order wife.

gramie@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 126d

Ah, okay.

It probably doesn't help that the last person she wants to talk to is her husband.

That one distraction from the Epstein files got so out of hand that they need to use the Epstein files as a distraction from that now lol.

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 130d

That's what I've been saying. I'm starting to think that it may be a deliberate strategy, and they'll just keep shifting the focus back and forth. When one issue gets too hot, shift to the other one, until the first one cools off. Then you can switch again.

unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz · 7 pts · 131d (1 reply)

I think I met this one on a plane or perhaps at a conference. I was REALLY UPSET ABOUT THE GARLIC and they didn't toss me, because I got some fuckin money

Isn't that a still from her speech yesterday?

WhatsHerBucket@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 131d

Yep

prettybunnys@piefed.social · 1 pts · 131d (4 replies)

Is it?

tomiant@piefed.social · 8 pts · 131d (1 reply)

Yes. I mean I saw bits of that clip myself, it looked like that. But I guess you can't spell contention without content.

Edit: You know what, you're right. It isn't. This is from the speech.

h6Qs7wNtdWCtl86.png

But... I don't see how it matters at all, I don't think perfect sourcing is really the point of this meme, we all got the reference obv. I mean not the moose thing, but the Melania thing, that I got.
