It wouldn't fly where I live in the us. It's 92 so noobd2. They'd do a tailpipe test and it would fail. My bet is that the catalytic converter actually failed because that's more effort to clear a cat than most people do. Like the material broke off and clogged it.

no crackhead will reseal a cat like that. It's too much effort and takes too long. They would have to drop the cat to mod it like that.

Maybe. If the cat was fucked, people would just punch out the inner material and add a $1 spark plug defouler for the downstream o2 sensor. This is an odd amount of effort.

Looks like somebody cut the pipe in two places, took the cat out (standard move when stealing a cat) and then the owner or whoever just wrapped the pipe with steel plate and screwed that in place.

Question. Are there countries in Europe that don't have mandatory inspections?
There are states in the US that have very tight regulations and inspections, and states that hear "regulations are written in blood" and think it's the regulation that kills people (Mississippi. It's always Mississippi. Or Florida)
Not sure where I was going with this, but the state I live in sucks balls. I wish I could live in Norway. So pretty. It calls to my soul. Fjords are amazing. I want to wear knit undershirts and never hug anyone

Not as far as I am aware. There is a EU rule followed by every member state more or less, which sais first check after 4 years the car was first sold. Then every two years.

Oh interesting! I wonder if that's a result of the prevalence of two-cycle engines in motorcycles a long time ago. Or maybe the ratio of motorcycles to larger vehicles is so low it doesn't make enough of an impact to regulate them. Or if there's a bit of regulatory capture from the motorcycle industry.
I'm pretty curious about this now. At least for the next ten minutes or so

Either the state they live in doesn't do emission inspections or it's on classic plates and it would be exempt (but very limited miles). This would fall where I live.

In my youth, I went through a series of jalopies, and learned all kinds of fixes. All my friends knew my motto: You can fix anything with duct tape and a wire coat hanger, and I always kept one of each in my trunk.
One day I was driving along with a buddy, and a hole blew out in the tailpipe of my car, making it really loud. We pulled over to a convenient store, and I bought a can of Coke, and a couple of round pipe clamps. We stood next to the car as he worried about the cost of a new exhaust system, while I drank my Coke.
When I was finished, I used a knife to cut off the ends of the can, and split it down its length. Then I crawled under the car, wrapped it around the exhaust pipe, and secured it with the pipe clamps. Good as new.
My friend was amazed that it actually worked, and cost less than $5. Even better, it was still in place when I got rid of the car about a year later.

I made a temporary (I literally had to make it another 20 miles to my garage) head gasket out of three soda cans that I cut and fitted together. It sounded awful, but it got me and my SAAB to where I could properly fix the thing. Same reaction from my friend that was with me. He was convinced that wasn't gonna work.
It would have only taken two cans, but I've always been a bit shakey, so I screwed up the second one.

Gaskets can be made from alot of things. Cereal or beer boxes make great gasket material in a pinch after some careful cutting. You can, of course, buy rolls of gasket material, but nobody got time for that.

It was probably pretty bad, considering we got the trans off last night and the pan contents was about 30% metal shavings and the ATF was more like caramel sludge. This poor thing got neglected then had a bunch of mod parts thrown at it instead of maintenance.

As a fellow car guy, that sucks to hear. It always amazes me when someone would rather modify a car than just take care of it. I'd be a little more understanding if this was thier daily and just couldn't afford to maintain it right. What kind of car is it, and what is your plan for it?
