I remember thinking it was cool when Doom loaded with R_Init: Init DOOM refresh daemon

That message has been forever seared into my brain and comes up when seeing the word "daemon".

RE: the original comic

I think the attitude of "oh, if you're a maladjusted man, you need to go get a girlfriend" is a toxic social expectation and one of the major causes of the male loneliness epidemic.

There are a lot of sad men in the world who have very solvable emotional problems. But instead of working on self improvement (exercise, mindfulness, therapy, getting friends, starting a hobby), they go looking for a girlfriend to fix them. The girls say "this isn't the 1950s, buckaroo, I don't have to be your mummy anymore", and reject the men. Then the men become incels and go online looking for male validation. They find the manosphere, and people like Tate say "exercise, eat good, practice grindfulness, and hate women". And since some of that advice is good, the men feel better and follow the bad parts too, like hating women. Which just makes them more bitter and lonelier people.

So, uhhhh, cultist who wants a demon to kill your rival. You should go for a walk, have a nutritious meal, do something that makes you happy, think about your place in the universe, and make a new friend. You don't need a girlfriend to practice healthy living, and you certainly don't need to hate women to practice healthy living.

I had that mentality of "I just need girlfriend to fix me" for a long time. I was lucky that enough people like you made posts and comments like these and the message eventually got through to me. Therapy has been great for helping me understand how to fix and improve my life without relying on someone else, and that's motivated me to exercise more, eat better, and improve my mental health through journaling and other activities.

I know it can sometimes feel like you're shouting into the void with comments like this, where a few people upvote and you get some silly responses, but you never know if your comment may be the one that finally gets through to someone. I appreciate comments like this and I hope people never stop repeating it.

Making new friends is exactly what daemon summoning is for.

Pyro@programming.dev · 15 pts · 101d (13 replies)

I've never heard of daemons outside a programming context

vanillama@programming.dev · 18 pts · 101d (3 replies)

They were divine beings above humans and below gods, they're probably the main inspiration for both angels and demons in Christianity

DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social · 5 pts · 101d

They were demons but with a funny æ

FishFace@piefed.social · 1 pts · 101d (1 reply)

Nope, daemon is just the Latin spelling. Sometimes we use it nowadays for fun to mean different things.

vanillama@programming.dev · 3 pts · 100d

In religious studies, daemon or daimon is used to refer to pre Christian supernatural beings as I said. There's a huge difference between beings that may or may not be evil vs demons who are generally regarded as evil by definition. Demons got their name from daimons, but they're not fully equivalent.

They appear in Warhammer a fair bit.

I recently read it in a book. It was used for an evolved human form. That was my first time seeing it other than programming too

Cron is absolutely lawful, not neutral. If there's any deamon that defines lawfulness it's sendmail, but after it, it's cron.

Sibbo@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 101d (4 replies)

So why are they called daemons and not demons?

zarlin@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 23 pts · 101d (2 replies)

Many people equate the word "daemon" with the word "demon", implying some kind of satanic connection between UNIX and the underworld. This is an egregious misunderstanding. "Daemon" is actually a much older form of "demon"; daemons have no particular bias towards good or evil, but rather serve to help define a person's character or personality. The ancient Greeks' concept of a "personal daemon" was similar to the modern concept of a "guardian angel"—eudaemonia is the state of being helped or protected by a kindly spirit. As a rule, UNIX systems seem to be infested with both daemons and demons.

DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social · 5 pts · 101d

They're equated because Christians label all heathenry as demonic.
