You got me in the first half, ngl

But either way, comparing absolute numbers can be misleading. How many monkeys live on this planet and how many bananas? Think about it.

That's a good point! I also want to know how they calculated that humans ate only 6 monkeys in 2025...

This is deeper than it might seem!

I think someone pulled those numbers out of a dark orifice. 74 million bananas seems laughably low. A quick research yielded about 9*10^11 (nine hundred billion) bananas being consumed world wide per year. I got that number by dividing the 109 million tons of bananas that were consumed world wide in 2022[1] with the 120g average weight of a banana[2].

I don't think it's possible to get reliable numbers for monkeys consumed as bush meat. However, in 2012 there was an estimate of 3000 gorillas being killed as food each year in Cameroon alone[3]. So it's probably safe to assume that the number for monkeys is much higher.

I thought nine HUNDRED BILLION BANANAS is FUCKING INSANE but actually that's about 1/3rd a banana a day, which is how my coworker always ate them. I'd say "hey, are you gonna finish your banana," and he'd say "yeah, tomorrow."

too_high_for_this@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 81d (1 reply)

Is your coworker a fruit fly?

petrol_sniff_king@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 81d

I can ask.

Do they just take a bite and fold it back like chinese takeaway?

Sort of like a Ritz cracker sleeve.

Many thousands of monkeys are eaten each year in Bush meat

tacosanonymous@mander.xyz · 38 pts · 82d (5 replies)

I bet we ate more than 6 though.

Jiggle_Physics@quokk.au · 17 pts · 82d (3 replies)

yeah, maybe 6 endangered great apes that are highly watched

Monkeys? I bet AT LEAST millions, they are common bushmeat.

Dave@lemmy.nz · 6 pts · 81d

74 million bananas a year also seems like hardly any. I'm pretty sure my kids ate a sizable portion of that number.

ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 81d

Yeah. There are places where monkey meat is common. Some places eat the brains, too.

No way, every human eats like 3 monkeys while they're asleep at night. The monkeys are chasing the spiders that we eat.

Is it actually good, or do people find it ironically funny?

OBVIOUSLY ITS GREAT, I'M THE MAIN CHARACTER

(jokes aside, DCC is genuinely one of the best series I've read in a very long time.

The premise is super dark. 99.99% of the world's population is dead by chapter 1, and the rest are forced to battle it out in a "world dungeon game show" for the universe's entertainment. And the whole dungeon is run by a sadistic AI that turns up the crazy to 11 for views.

It's funny, and the humor gives way for the emotional gut punches to hit harder.

In terms of literary value, it's got some political commentary, and makes some incredibly based statements about the late stage capitalist hellscape we live in, but they're pretty obvious and not any kind of deep symbolism.

It's a popcorn action movie about a guy in his underwear and his ex girlfriend's cat. It's great.)

*Only six that we know of. Also 6 sounds like a lowball number, given the fact there are cultures that are known to consume unconventional animals as delicacies. And the bored rich who will dish out ungodly amount of money for stupid shit, just for the sake of exclusivity.

P1k1e@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 81d

I can't imagine it's considered unconventional in places where monkeys are prevalent. Perhaps in city's and such but rural folks with access to a large population likely wouldn't give a rats ass what people outside their communities expect

too_high_for_this@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 81d

Seventy million bananas for 8 billion people is ridiculously low, too.

Mr_Fish@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 82d

That's a lot of radiation that humans collectively ate
