Australia here. We're available for invasion any time. I mean you don't even need to soften us up with the middle and bombs. We can go straight to peace talks and accepting reparations.
I mean, one could make the argument that higher poverty levels from Western sanctions were killing more elementary school children than that yearly, so a few elementary schools for sanctions relief is "worth it" in a purely utilitarian sense. That aside I don't think the Iranian regime was optimizing for minimum dead elementary school children, so it can be a good deal for them even if it sucks for other people.
Nope. That's why I phrased it as an argument that can be made, not an established fact. That said, the impact of US sanctions on Iranian healthcare is well documented (123), and that's before getting to knock-on effects from general increased poverty, so I'd be very surprised if this was not the case.
Apparently part of the agreement is that Iran reserves the right to charge for crossings of the Straight BUT with a two year moratorium. You know, so that they can fuck the inevitable Democratic administration once these fucks are kicked to the curb.
Upon the signing of this MoU, the Islamic Republic of Iran will make arrangements using its best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge for 60 days only from the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman and vice versa. The traffic of commercial vessels will immediately start, and considering the need for removing the technical and military obstacles and demining by the Islamic Republic of Iran, will be instated within 30 days.
Ah, much like the Reflecting Pool, he took some that wasn't broken, promised to fix it, openly embezzled money, cronies got rich, now it's in staggeringly worse condition than it was before, the American public suffers, he blames Obama, and probably shit his pants a few times in the process.

That's not how it works with allies, sadly. Instead we gave them 300 billion for submarines we will never get.

The Iranian defence budget is something like 10-20 billion a year, btw. How's that for a return on investment.

The best trade deal in the history of trade deals, maybe ever.

Really? Did you forget that the US blew up more than one Iranian elementary school?

I'm not saying it's not true, but do you have a source for this?

Nope. That's why I phrased it as an argument that can be made, not an established fact. Art of the deal!

Iām not sure that 300 billion is even enough to pay for all the damages that were done to begin with, not much of a return on investment.

For scale, that count of money is enough for free college tuition for like a decade. There's probably space for room and board there too.
SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world · 20 pts · 62d
What kind of college are you going to where it costs thirty billion a year?!?
Zachariah@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 62d
an American college
n4ch1sm0@piefed.social · 5 pts · 61d
Should've clarified that I meant that in context of the american population lol
Serinus@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 61d
It's $35b a year for just tuition, around 92b per year for tuition and board.
infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 61d
Is that with current jacked-up US private tuition rates, current jacked-up US public tuition rates, or hypothetical Europe-equivalent tuition rates?

I'm sure US will be fine by just cracking down on some 1% of tax evasion. Probably would get more money out of it than this payment.

It's entirely possible Trump is eager to spend this money because he's been promised a kickback.
