I've been trying to migrate away from snapchat for years now because everything about it irritates me but I've still got like 3 stragglers for whom it is my main form of communication.

You can, however, rename them.
PumaStoleMyBluff@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 61d
I named them "Advertisement" lol

I've never given Snapchat access to my contacts ever. It's not only blocked in the app, but also on the system level. And yet I still get connection suggestions "from your contacts". It's infuriating

TikTok did the same shit back when I used it. It's weird because I've always kept my internet life separate from my personal life, and now every app is begging to show my closest friends and family my shitposts, political takes and NSFW content. I'm mostly done with traditional social media by now at this point anyway. I've managed to kick tiktok and am now permanently banned from reddit so hopefully I won't get sucked back in.

I'm pretty sure they connect it to your device ID
Chaunticleer@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 16 pts · 61d
If you logged in using a phone number they're referencing you from other people who have you in their contacts.
If you tell them no, they just dick you from another angle
paranoid@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 61d
This is what I thought too until I noticed the contacts listed were using the names I have for them - "apprehension", "brazzle", "dizzy", "momster", "Jared who hit me".
They're not using another angle to dick people over, they're just ignoring security preferences and blaming us for getting mad
OliMoli2137@piefed.social · 2 pts · 61d
maybe you've allowed contacts in the OS?
paranoid@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 61d
I have not, and I made extra sure of that
VeganCheesecake@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 1 pts · 61d
If you can prove that, you'd probably have a nice story on your hand. I don't think there's currently a known way an app can bypass system permissions for contacts on current Android/iOS.

Yup, you just gotta do it once

I redownloaded Snapchat today on my degoogled phone since my friends use it all the time now and I've also seen that it somehow got all of my contacts. Turns out that it uploaded my contacts to their cloud without me clearly telling that when I first signed up.
To check if your contacts are in cloud: Go to your profile > Open "Settings" by tapping the cogwheel > Under "Account Actions", select "Contact syncing" > Tap "See contacts shared with Snapchat". You can delete your contacts there too, I just did that. If you have an Android phone, I'd recommend you to patch your app with something like ReVanced to minimize data collection.

I've disabled it on the system level and on my Samsung phone it doesn't send those notifications. idk if calyxos will have the ability to do that once it comes back.
orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 16 pts · 61d
Tell them you're moving on. It's not worth it. If they're really your friends, you can find another way. If they don't, they only care about the way you are on Snap. That's hollow.
mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de · 9 pts · 61d
I was in the same situation as you. Just message them elsewhere and delete it. Everyone who wasn't willing to message me on a better platform turned out to not be that worth interacting with. All the real ones did what they could to keep talking to me without hesitation and respected my reasoning
irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 60d
If I do that I will literally have 2 friends left.
lenocolomo@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 60d
That's the cost of comfort.

i guess you don't really know what the word "friend" is. but those people who refuse to leave snapchat might be considered "fake friends"
dil@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 59d
Or they just use one platform for communication with everyone and leaving it for just one person is a bit extra, like why do yall expect everyone to cater to you in order to be your friend
dil@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 59d
I had friends leave gcs/socialmedia and get mad we haven't talked in a while, shit is a two way street, yall can hit ppl up too. I got limited time to communicate and schedule hangingout and I legit forget ppl exist if I don't see some sign of them daily. Them leaving all social media means Idr them overtime.
If yall wanna be hard to access, you have to hit ppl up yourself, can't complain years later no one is talking to you when they never see any sign of you.
dil@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 59d
People's stories remind me they exist and sometimes show me they are in the same area so we can get together. Streaks are more something kids do, once you lose them one you stop caring lol.
mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 59d
Maybe you could keep talking them on Snapchat, but also on the other platform too. Are they really just completely unwilling to get on something like signal? you don't even need to make an account really
irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 58d
The only other platform I have most of them on is tiktok, which isn't much better.
Everyone has whatsapp, but It'd be weird to ask for a phone number out of nowhere. All the groupchats are setup on snapchat as well, so even if I got most people on whatsapp, they'd keep organizing there.
mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 58d
Definitely an annoying situation, I guess maybe you could try posting about the problems that you see with Snapchat, like with articles and whatnot, whenever you have a chance, and maybe just trying to get them to change their stance on it. For me personally, leaving Snapchat was a privacy and ethics choice - and anyone who wouldn't respect that, good riddance. I only really have two friends myself. I enjoy it usually. I get to spend lots more time with them, and an exchange have a deeper connection. Its not for everyone though.

Delta Chat is a good whatsapp type without phone numbers, if you ever could get them to switch.

I had that issue too, and contacted support! Turns out There is this guy from Swaziland, whose name happens to be Team Snapchat (you couldn’t make this shit up). So Mr. Snapchat and Team Snapchat’s accounts keep on colliding with one another… on Snapchat!
notsosure@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 60d
Sorry, Switzerland, not Swaziland.

Just leave. Humans were alive before Snapchat and they'll be alive when it's dead as well.
razen@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 60d
Can someone explain what is snapchat for? Is ot like messaging app or a social app?
Theoriginalthon@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 60d
Originally for sending dick pics and tit pics, now it's like early Facebook where instead of poking people and throwing sheep, you send a picture with or without a filter to get a streak.
razen@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 59d
Tanks, good I never get there

Don't use META products. Delete your Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat accounts. Tell everyone you know.
