I'll fill that in: Geese wouldn't have to be around humans so much if humans didn't turn untold millions of square miles of natural habitat into a sea of asphalt and concrete for their stupid vroom vroom boxes.
Geese make excellent watch animals and can fight off predators as large as coyotes, plus they are hardier and more self-sufficient than most other livestock birds, and finally much of their diet is grass (meaning they require substantially less supplementary feed).
This is goose slander. Also it's spelled "squirrel."
One of my favorite things when listening to audiobooks is when the narrator has impeccable dignified RP diction and then suddenly the word "squirrel" arrives to cause hilarious auditory chaos 😄
Even better when the narrator has a Scottish accent!
IIRC from an ornithologist talk, owls have such good evolutionary advantages (eyesight, hearing, silent flight), they don't have to be "intelligent". The rest of the raptors are generally considered more "intelligent" for seeking, stalking, and catching prey.
Corvids are but it's not a bird universal. Ravens, crows, magpies are smart, but owls belong to an evolutionary family that considers brains to be a good counterweight.
not as smart as the smartest birds doesn't mean they aren't still smart. also, parrots have similar intelligence to corvids, and even pigeons are good at recognizing patterns
Ok, I'm a bit tired and I thought that the last word in your sentence was "partners" for a good 10 seconds, and I thought, "hmmmm, what now?"
It took a second read through for me to fully understand what you were saying.
I have a buddy who's a forest ecologist, he loves nature and all of its creatures....... except for deer. If you get the right amount of booze in him he will go on like an hour long rant about how it should be everyone's civic duty to shoot deer in the face on site.
Apparently native Americans spent centuries reshaping all the forest in America to become giant deer factories to sustain the large population of pre colonial America. These deer factories are still making deer printers go brrr noises even after the great dying of the native population. And the European settlers who replaced them spent their extinction level effort on hunting everything else.
So now the deer population is so overpopulated that the greatest threat to their population is disease and starvation. All while they strip the forest floor of any plants at deer height. They've basically sterilized American Forrest of the shrub, saplings, and undergrowth that a Forrest needs to sustain native habitats and a healthy ecology.
We have also eradicated the wolf in many areas where they would keep the deer in check. My dog tries his best though, its on sight with deer. Hes actually gotten two of them.
Yeah, trying to explain to people who think hunting deer is unethical or bad for nature is always difficult. There is no such thing as unaltered nature in North America, the native populations were extremely good at creating forest that could pump out enough deer to feed millions of people and hundreds of thousands wolves at the same time.
Doing nothing is just wrecking the ecology that was shaped over hundreds if nothing thousands of years and creating systemic collapses that destroy what diversity we have left.
I'm a bit frightened of geese but still felt bad for them in the park near where we used to live, because kids would chase after them and the parents in that town would encourage it and laugh along. They only really fought back if they had goslings to protect
Owls are thought to be wise because of their association with Athena and having dramatic eyes, but they have small brains and are not particularly smart compared to other birds.
Well, was about to get upset and rant that oppossums are not intelligent, they are the very picture of stupidity, and then i realized the post said possums. And i dont know anything about those Australian fuckers, maybe they are intelligent.

I wonder why the softbank goose hadn't broken out of mastodon yet. It's been over 3 days.

A sign I found IRL. Last time I checked, geese can’t read, so I’m not sure what the point of it is.

Maybe to discourage people from introducing invasive species in that particular area?
Or it's a sign for that ONE guy in the neighborhood who insists on taking his obnoxious goose with him everywhere?
Or maybe it's a Scarfolk type thing?

Owls are not wise. They're idiots, almost the entire skull cavity is just made of eyeballs, that's very little left over for the brain.

I can barely get three kids to go to bed at the same time. That goose is a better mom than I am.
