Okay so public transportation is chill depending on where you are. Where I am this is the the full MBTA map because the commuter rail map shows the full map with all the lines.
The purple line once out of the zone of the orange, red, blue and green lines (silver are busses) the trips start to range in the 45 min to 3 hour range which means the trips are super long and we don't have 220km/h trains we have 126km/h trains for outer city/long destinations and it's not cheap either unless you have a reduced fare card and even then......
In the city though, the orange, red and green are the best and most reliable. The blue line is reliable it's just drags out in feeling. The silver line busses work well they just suck a lot to use.
The commuter rail is a loud ass stainless steel looking, double decker with wifi that's always on time but a fucking long ass wait and super inconvenient if you miss it plus there's always one out, there's always a delay, it never ends it fuckin sucks.
Is rather feel robbed for the price of gas per gallon than deal with the train ever again. Especially in the direction of out of the city.

Mine is stuffed with the myth that the world we're living in is a CERN restarted world after the world ended and it's stuck in a mode trying to prove it. So it's giving answers based on an alternative time line and the probabilities based on what would've happened in the world that didn't get moved to this universe in 2012/saved after the world ended in 2012.
Some people certainly will, but I think the vast majority will simply accept it because at least they’re still getting their treats, even if they don’t actually own them anymore.
well they will own them the thing is they have make the subscription be the other half of the figure of the car paid off over time and essentially locking a customer into a contract where they're not able to sell their car for a duration and by then the car depreciates because then the next owner will need to go through some kind of complicated customer service process to legally transfer the ownership. lol that's not a bad idea tbh.
so like you buy a new car at a reduced msrp at like 15k$ but the subscription service locks you in to an annual subscription service fee of like 2k$ for 10 years. That subscription fee unlocks the car as you as the full owner with selling rights and you're able to unlock certain features every payment. If they did it in a way where that would reduce the APR that would be amazing.
Really wish people realized this 20 years ago when we actually had a chance to stop it.
Everyone sounding the alarms over the past two decades ago were ridiculed. Arguments seen as over reacting or a "my brand vs your brand" thing (really about the infrastructure and consumer rights).
Fascism is the inevitable result of all government. Government is an accumulation of power, and it continues to accumulate power throughout its existence. Over the generations, it acquires more and more power exponentially.
Fascism is the inevitable result of all government. Government is an accumulation of power, and it continues to accumulate power throughout its existence. Over the generations, it acquires more and more power exponentially.
Every self serving entity desires to accumulate power.
The same can be said of anything that serves itself and can last beyond a single generation. A family, a commune, a group of like minded individuals, a business or a corporation, etc.
The goal should be for the organization to serve it's membership and for the organization's membership to include everyone. Capitalism's values and incentives are inherently self serving. Most capitalist "market theory" assumes, if not requires, self serving participants. Its an inherently self-destructive system.
Mussolini was trying to push that particular economic agenda at the time he said that. He is generally credited with being the father of modern fascism, but Mussolini himself waffled between different economic policies as he rose to power and led Italy through WWII.
You can be a fascist and an oligarch, socialist, communist, capitalist, etc...
The soviets did not merge corporate and state power, they abolished the bourgeois state and established a socialist state. The fascist route would have been to support the Provisional Government protecting bourgeois interests.
Should we have any leftists in a party, there are good odds someone is measuring social blood sugar and popping the vein and setting the injected black blood to ignite explosively. I mean that literally. What law matters when anyone figures it out and tells anyone else, that blood shows up and BOOM! like Firefly comics just stopped because wash was about to spoil thei
70% of Independents want universal health care, you don't need to ask centrists, either.
90% of Ds want universal health care.
It's not being stopped by 30% of the voters (Republicans... still, even 30% of them want universal healthcare).
The "pro-universal health care" side is fucking over their own constituents, as they are paid very well to do.
(reminder that independents are now 40% of the voters, Ds and Rs 30% each; these percentages are based on Pew but there are many polls pick your favorite)
I broadly agree, but the idea that the USA doesn't have protests at all is overstating the case to an obvious degree, given the widespread coverage each No Kings protest gets, with particular emphasis on how large the crowds are. One could argue that these protests are ineffective, but the phrasing in the OP is "no protests", which is provably wrong.
I point this out because in my experience, when attempting to persuade, it's better to make 99 good points than to make 99 good points and 1 weak one. Because people hostile to your overall argument will focus on that 1 weak point and make it seem (to casual observers) like your entire argument must be that weak.
If the protest is meaningless then it is effectively the same as not even being allowed. One could argue it’s almost worse because it gives the illusion of the right.
You are describing a chilling effect. Those weapons are not used at all protests and that is the point. They want you think twice before going to protest. Still though, in general, it's not criminal to attend or organize a protest.
It's good that you and everyone here knows that these things are happening. If the twitter post was just speaking to the choir, then what's the point? Circle jerk to make us feel better? Retweets and upvotes aren't going to save us.
If the post is trying to reach people and wake them up, then they are speaking to people who are not aware of the story you cited. To them it just seems like OP is lying and the post does nothing to help anything.
To put in in perspective, China has over 10,000 protests every year, and the CPC responds to the vast majority of the grievances that triggered them, imprisoning corrupt local officials, fixing infrastructure, etc. That’s why the satisfaction rating with the central government is at 90+%.
Sure, but my point is that if that's what you mean then that's what you should say. It's important to keep a message simple, but not at the expense of honesty. Otherwise a lot of people tune out.
We can still protest. We still have a legal right to free speech. It's not worth the hyperbole. It also perpetuates a misconception that authoritarianism doesn't allow for protests and free speech.
The model we are emulating is competitive authoritarianism. For the past four decades it has been an increasingly popular form of government.
There will be elections. There will be protests. There will be opposing parties and anti-government speech.
But the tables will be tilted heavily. They will allow small opposition wins, but the majority will stay with one party.
Speech won't be illegal, but you will be harassed. Asked questions by law enforcement. Press will be sued.
They will leverage the private/public surveillance apparatus to monitor public sentiment on all topics and how far they can push (and release pressure when needed) and what opposition to monitor/harass. Decades of data from political science, sociology, and psychology will make this an art.
It's dangerous if we perpetuate the idea that authoritarianism only exists when we can't protest or say anti-government things. The underlying institutional foundations are being changed now. The referees are being captured now. Press and citizens can legally say what they want, but the chilling effect is happening now.
We need more mobilization. Hyperbolic takes and not being clear on what authoritarianism actually looks like in the 21st century will make it harder.
this nerdy declaration of facts serves what purpose? the OP's points would ring true with your average american and make them think deeper about the culture they live in and the dynamics swirling around them.
right-wingers don't care about facts and it would appear year after year after year that militantly pointing to all these obvious contradictions and mistruths never accomplishes anything, no more than it does to the religious zealot that ignores the gospels.
but anyone left of center is expected to lay down absolute undisputable facts at all times.
Finally got my full bill for my no-insurance emergency “we have to do this or you die” surgery from a month ago. (At least I think that’s it - who knows if I’ll get more random “I was in the room for five minutes that’ll be $1000” bills)
$24,000. That’s after the self-pay discount from something like $300,000. I’m making around $2400 this month.
My first plan is going to be trying to ask them for an itemized list of services I think. I think with medical debt you can also work out repayment on a much smaller scale because they know they other option is you being like “fuck it.”
Lets make some Lazer Megaphones to help those who forgot how to listen by unreal not-paper talisman. Oh, but Heath Ledger's Joker was the "bad" guy for being funny on the big show demo of that whole shebang.
I mean Sirius, Lee Camp nails it down to excessive detail and even they ask for the same sucker talisman tricks. Good Pornographic Luck.
God forbid you exercise your Second Amendment right and bring a gun to that protest to protect yourself. You’ll be shot dead before it ever leaves your holster just like Alex Pretti. An Intensive Care Unit nurse who was brutally murdered in our streets on camera by ICE. The man never reached for his gun but they shot him several times. Then proceeded to lie about circumstances before video evidence was revealed.
Do it as an individual, and yeah, but do it as a large group and very visible (like holding ARs), and I guarantee nobody gets gunned down & the police actually try to peacefully de-escalate any rise in tensions.
And qute true - except food and housing - all did happen in easte european socialism, maybe evenmore. For food and housing, very very basics were provided by some govs, but none could have more, no matter one tried, all was stolen by gov and The Party.
Both systems are very fragile to corruption, socialism probably even more, coz peoples are peoples. By pure definition, both systems are (could be) awesome.
it's almost as if systems are tools that can be used for good or for evil, and have been invented to deal with certain problems, and can cause others of their own making, necessitating new tools to replace them and fix the problems they created.
Yes, but your statements inaccurately imply a certain equivalence between communism and capitalism that does not hold. Capitalism is hell when done properly. Socialism is good when done properly.
Capitalism is hell when done properly. Socialism is good when done properly.
And the inverse can also be correct then, which is my entire point, although I word it more that any system can work correctly if the right people make the right decisions.
What has happened to the US is the direct result of unfettered capitalism. The more the wealth gets concentrated into the hands of fewer and fewer people, the more the ultra wealthy need to invest in oppression, surveillance, disinformation and fascism, since a united and well informed public would put their heads on spikes. Other countries are a little better insulated, not having bought so wholeheartedly into the idea of money controlling politics and not having been similarly brainwashed. The USA has been primed to fall first. But the root cause is ludicrous wealth inequality, which is a feature of capitalism and very much a global issue.
direct result of unfettered capitalism. The more the wealth gets concentrated into the hands of fewer and fewer people
I'd say it's lack of political will to fix issues. Poland wanted to access common EU market and all the benefits, so we introduced high quality law and law enforcement along with strong anti curruption framework. Additionally if state fucks you, you can do a complain to the EU Tribunal of Justice. The end result is that we effectively have more capitalism than the corpocracy of US. And it works, capitalism is really good if it runs along with high quality legal framework. It's not a perfect system, but I by all means prefer it over US
democracy and poland xD in the best case, it's anocracy. Sorry but poland is closer and closer to russia and belarus, especially since russian invasion
free speech? It's complicated. I mean, you can do and say more if you're right wing (or just fascist). If you're in opposition (leftist, anarchist or just non-right winger) or if you're immigrant (especially Ukrainian now) then...you better watch out. Let's say we can use quote of goddamm idi amin "There is freedom of speech, but I cannot guarantee freedom after speech"
corruption? Well, they say it's solved but it's hidden and poland pretends "no, we're fine. Anywho, look at ukraine, it's so bad there about corruption"
healthcare? In theory we have it but it's underfunded and corrupted (we just have another corruption scandal...again) and if you want to get much faster, you have to pay and use private healthcare. If you live outside city, good luck then
Well, it's not as bad as usa but...it's not good either
Compared to the US where there are two cancerous political parties and nothing else... Ever. Democracy in poland is far better. Instead of two cancerous parties, you have five cancerous parties, but at least there's some vote migration and resulting shifts of power. In case of US it's a literal duopoly.
free speech? It’s complicated.
While I agree 100% Poland is much more right wing than US, the freedom of speech is better. You aren't risking being shot for having wrong opinion here. Nor is police knocking to your doors for shitposting on Twitter like in UK. Worst what happens to left winger is right wingers down voting them into oblivion, which happens often.
healthcare?
It's shitty but stable. Many people use private services for more mundane issues like dental ect. And while it's shitty, it won't bankrupt you. In some cases, homelessness in US is caused by health issues combined with Healthcare costs. Here it just doesn't happen.
Yeah...and no. In poland, you have several cancerous parties which cooperate with two main cancerous parties. It's like distinction without a difference. Maybe there is a choice but...
Yet. About police knocking, they were knocking mostly during women's strike protests in 2020-2021 but now, police mostly surveil opposition (but they don't surveil fascist or just pro-russian groups. Interesting). Yeah, for now it's mostly downvoting but for how long? Especially if right wing can count on police
Stable...stably getting worse. Number or services you can use is decreasing. Yeah, surprisingly it's not that bad as usa but for how long? Especially if you have (another) pro-bussiness government
So just like I said, it's not as bad as usa but that doesn't mean poland is a paradise
good thing for our strong moral fiber. i'm certain this is just an american thing; it's not like capitalism contains the seeds of its own destruction or anything, this is all just because americans are genetically stupid
It's a narcissism thing. There's narcissists everywhere, but it seems to be more common in the American population than elsewhere. Maybe because you're taught from a young age that a small group of revolutionaries invented freedom and you aspire to be like them. Because of this Americans are unlikely to consider any ideas from anywhere else in the world, and if exposed to new ideas from elsewhere will reject them because America is "too special" for outside ideas to work.
Americans place a greater importance on identity than other cultures. So you're either a capitalist, socialist, libertarian, or whatever. This prevents you from understanding any nuance on issues.
You can definitely have both capitalism and socialism working in the same society, and this has been demonstrated in many countries around the world. But it can't work in America because that would be compromise and Americans believe compromise is weakness. You're either a socialist that's against capitalism or a capitalist that's against socialism. Anything in between the extremes is something to be hated.
American culture has always been about imposing will onto others while sounding like you're enlightened. Slave masters writing pretty words about freedom and equality. American socialism isn't a deviation from this culture. American socialists seek to impose their will onto others in their country, while American fascists are imposing their will on the country. Everyone is writing a lot of pretty words about how they are the ones that are going freedom to the people and make America great.
While competing with each other over who can write the prettiest words about freedom (in an effort to manipulate others), your country becomes more corrupt and moves closer to collapse. Which you all seem to want because you believe a collapse will allow you to impose your will on your countrymen. Because you don't want freedom or equality, you just want to impose your will onto others. The American way in reality.
You're just slave masters writing pretty words about freedom. That's all America has ever been.
When you insist that it’s what is going to happen under every other system and it happens under yours too that ends up being that you didn’t make a fucking point at all.
You just wasted our fucking lives for decades over a warning that ended up happening under your system anyways.
At any fucking point if you wanna shut the fuck up, that would be fucking great.
He served a single term as a democratically elected president. Hardly an example of absolute power.
And there goes the goal posts. God almighty then.
Che Guevara
Please show me where Che Guevara achieved absolute power, you historically illiterate chud. Or where he was fucking "corrupted" by it , for that matter.
For that matter, show that any of those people achieved absolute power and then are "corrupted" by it, given none of them changed at all in terms of character or ideology.
Sure, no one denies that but you're missing the point. The point is that people in power claim that we can't have socialism, because it would lead to the aforementioned problems, completely ignoring the fact that we have those problems under capitalism anyways.
Socialism is a mode of production and distribution where public ownership is the principal aspect of the economy, and the working classes control the state. Communism is the end result of collectivizing all production and distribution globally, and is economically compelled by socialism.
Then your history teacher was ignorant, -ism comes from the greek -ismós which means "to take a stand in favour of" or "In the style of" it's used to describe nearly all types of philosophical and religious ideas, art forms, schools of thought, etc etc
What she said is basically: "ignore every idea that exist cuz i say so" and you follow that blindly; please follow what you belive is good and true not what people tell you to follow otherwise you aren't much more different than a blind sheep
They're saying that this isn't Real Capitalism™. And they're partially right. It's often called hyper-capitalism, something regular capitalism likes to evolve into.
Nice save for them. Some of the stories I've read on .world lately make me realize how much in trouble USA and the West in general is, but the comments are absolutely gobsmacking.
Yeah, the system is breaking down but nobody with the power to do so wants to change the system. On the contrary, the top fights to keep their growth going by cannibalizing the rest of society until the rot is everywhere and a foreign actor topples things. That's just history's refrain.
As long as we still have the option to use gasoline for heating, refrigerants for cooling, have the ability to drive gasoline powered cars and can keep 3/4's of our paychecks. Then yes, socialism is good.
If you have to pay more taxes, give all your money away, have to wait an hour to charge your car to get to the next gas station to charge it yet again for an hour which is the same as renting in terms of efficacy, have to endure freezing cold winters, blazing hot summers and need to care about others then it's shit.
Like I want to be able to survive without paying more, if any one of you start making good money like the 70k$+ bracket you'll all start having the mindset of why the fuck do I have to pay all this shit!, I know someone with an electric car and it has amazing maneuverability and it's quiet af, however it's charge drops quicker than a gas tank ever will.
I'm sorry, not sorry, I fucking love using my natgas boiler for my radiators at 70°f ( fuck all the haters cause all those haters want nuclear power plants which are nuclear rods in water, essentially a radioactive steam boiler) in the winter and my window ac at 65°f-68°f in the summer (along with a pedestal fan).
I'm not going to remove the luxuries of my life for others to have them. I'm not going to lower my usage for others to be able to use them.
In this country if you have the money to afford the stupid shit we buy with the money we can gain up to stupid amounts then go for it be as greedy as you want. If you can afford it do it!!!
Just wait three years and see if the next one will make a difference. Hint: it's Gavin vs J. D. next time place your bets now.
I pay my bills to use my luxuries. I paid for my luxury items. I pay for my insurance. I pay for my coffee and weed. I pay for the things I like using and owning and I pay the extra it takes to run them. That's it, that's life!
Other than that it's populating, eating, drinking, shitting and bitching about life. Sorry but changing the US to socialism isn't a magic fix for life. Changing your life, is a magic fix to your life.
I will also say, I do wish I had a propane rigged setup for my steam boiler for my radiators because of the Gwp (based on the epa 20 year use) but the efficacy of a flame based heater vs electric is unfathomably better.
A Gasoline car can get me from here to possibly Canada maybe the tip of Michigan. An Electric car can get me from here to the next county.
I don't have a mini split or central air system, I have one a.c. and it's not even in my room, its not even on the floor where my bed is, I use a different pedestal fan for sleeping and have the windows open. In fact, I hate using my a.c. but when I want to use it I want to actually cool down not just go 10° below the outside and be limited by a controller.
I pay my electric bill, I want to use my A.c. however the fuck I see fit. I pay my gas bill. I pay my utilities, so I can run them however much I fuckin' feel like it.
The gwp of propane is like 3 to 8 over 20 years with methane aka natgas is around 86 mainly due to non-combusted natgas. Which combusted natgas has a gwp of around 5 max if that I think it's actually around a 1 or a 3 because burning natgas/methane is less harmful than just spewing it out as a gas. I think it has something to do with he conversion to c02.
Don't hate me hate the epa and science and physics. Hate the fact that from Boston to the tip of Michigan is like 2 tanks of gas vs charging every county for an hour, is a reality because we haven't made electric as good as gas is energy wise. Yes pollution sucks I get that, I'm not for fuck the earth I want to have this planet going long after I'm gone too, I just don't ignore the amount of energy that can be used from different resources and effectively with realistic equipment that is affordable to the everyday civilian consumer. A minisplit is still using a refrigerant. Most heaters are using natgas. Most cars are still gasoline or hybrid which I'm more in favor of vs full electric. The engines that shut off when you're idling in traffic, I love those, those are my all time favorite.
Idk, it also depends where you live. Like in Virginia electricity is fucking expensive. In Alaska it makes more sense to run a natgas heater. In rural areas oil is used. Campgrounds use propane. It's not like things aren't worth using. Like in the consistently hotter areas of the country it makes sense to have electric tankless hot water heaters for showers and have electric heating systems or space heaters for the potential of snow on areas that will most likely never see it or if they do it's the areas like California, Texas, Florida areas that declare snow emergencies for 2" where New England a snow emergency is like the first 5 hours of the day is snow or shovelling snow.
So it does vary by your geographical location on this planet on what your needs are going to be but the statement of if I pay my bills I should be able to use my utilities however I want remains. You all should be able to use your equipment you purchased however you want to with out giving a shit about the person next to you and that's okay. You paid you should get to use it. That's why the boomers do what they do it's not entitlement from nothing they actually show that if you're doing something the right way like paying your bills and paying for what you own you are entitled to be able to use what you own and pay for however you want. I could sell my ac too and never use it again because I paid for it it's mine, I pay the bill to run it I can do whatever I want with it within reason. I can't throw my ac off my balcony but if I'm hot at 3am and it's 93°f in the middle of a heatwave, I'm shooting that shit down to 68°f.
Like I run my ac 1 hour on 2 hours off because its not central (closed loop/recovers the refrigerant in a closed cycle, loud as hell though, I grew up with one I fucking hated the noise it was on the roof too, my neighbors have one and I fuckin hate it, every year I wish it would collapse so they could get a noiseless mini split cassette) I'd have to have it reloaded with more refrigerant and eventuality I would just get sick from all the dry cool air.
I also don't want my electric bill to be too much. So I switch off between cooling the house and using the windows and fans. I have an electric range oven.
Again, I'm with energy efficiency and saving the planet but if you want to survive in certain areas of the planet and not hate your fuckin' self you need what is the most effective not the least polluting.
And because I'm not for fuck the planet I do the conservatative methods too depending on the environmental needs. Which is why I run my a.c. At 68°f for an hour and shut it off for 2. When I shave I fill my sink halfway with water and wipe with a damp towel or turn the water on and off as needed not let it flow the whole time. Same with dishes, I have a small tray for soaking cups and silverware. I use fans at night because when the heatwave/heat dome left my area of the US and the nights were regualr like they are now it gets down to 68°f at night so I don't use my a.c. at night at all. Like I said I have an electric range. I run my heat the same timer interval of 1 hour on 2 hours off and use a space heater during the 2 hours off if I get cold.
I'm not wasteful with resources but again, if I'm waking up drenched in sweat in the middle of a heatwave at 93°f at like 3am, I'm going to the middle of my house where the one window a. C. Is and I'm shooting that shit down to 68°f for an hour and blowing that cold air all over the place with a pedestal fan.

Mussolini was trying to push that particular economic agenda at the time he said that. He is generally credited with being the father of modern fascism, but Mussolini himself waffled between different economic policies as he rose to power and led Italy through WWII.

Because people hostile to your overall argument will focus on that 1 weak point and make it seem (to casual observers) like your entire argument must be that weak.
moustachio@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 34d
If the protest is meaningless then it is effectively the same as not even being allowed. One could argue it’s almost worse because it gives the illusion of the right.

Tango@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 34d
Either way, neither argument is the same as "no protests".
BeKindRewind@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 34d
Protesting is legal.

OldChicoAle@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 34d

Tango@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 34d
Sure, but my point is that if that's what you mean then that's what you should say. It's important to keep a message simple, but not at the expense of honesty. Otherwise a lot of people tune out.
BeKindRewind@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 34d

You've mistaken capitalism with what you have in US
bampop@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 34d
What has happened to the US is the direct result of unfettered capitalism. The more the wealth gets concentrated into the hands of fewer and fewer people, the more the ultra wealthy need to invest in oppression, surveillance, disinformation and fascism, since a united and well informed public would put their heads on spikes. Other countries are a little better insulated, not having bought so wholeheartedly into the idea of money controlling politics and not having been similarly brainwashed. The USA has been primed to fall first. But the root cause is ludicrous wealth inequality, which is a feature of capitalism and very much a global issue.
BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world · -7 pts · 34d
I'd say it's lack of political will to fix issues. Poland wanted to access common EU market and all the benefits, so we introduced high quality law and law enforcement along with strong anti curruption framework. Additionally if state fucks you, you can do a complain to the EU Tribunal of Justice. The end result is that we effectively have more capitalism than the corpocracy of US. And it works, capitalism is really good if it runs along with high quality legal framework. It's not a perfect system, but I by all means prefer it over US

BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 32d
Compared to the US where there are two cancerous political parties and nothing else... Ever. Democracy in poland is far better. Instead of two cancerous parties, you have five cancerous parties, but at least there's some vote migration and resulting shifts of power. In case of US it's a literal duopoly.
It's shitty but stable. Many people use private services for more mundane issues like dental ect. And while it's shitty, it won't bankrupt you. In some cases, homelessness in US is caused by health issues combined with Healthcare costs. Here it just doesn't happen.
rofrex@szmer.info · 0 pts · 32d

SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca · -2 pts · 34d
