We had to have a rule at the D&D table. NO PYTHON REFERENCES! One 'Im not quite dead.' or a 'Get on with it!' quip and we'd lose an entire session to Holy Grail jokes.
My third place needs this as a rule for Mel Brooks. Drop a spaceballs or men in tights line in that place and the entire shop stops and waits for people to finish the scene.
Brick, I've been meaning to talk to you about that. You should find yourself a safe house or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because you're probably wanted for murder.
Yeah, they existed, but they weren't mainstream and were mostly just simple image macros. In 2004, if you talked about memes in public, it meant you browsed 4 Chan or Something Awful, which made you a loser to most people.
Related: Anybody else annoyed how you can't just tell jokes anymore? These days every time you try to tell a joke you heard before everyone just seems to yell about how you took the joke from somewhere or someone. It's like they expect every joke told to be 100% Original Content Donut Steel.
Yeah, it's really weird. Sure if you're a comedian doing stand up, you should come up with original material. But if you're just drinking some beers and having some laughs, why would anyone care?
Big Trouble in Little China and The Last Dragon got a lot of air time for us too. Throw in The Blues Brothers 'we're on a mission from God' as an honorable mention.
According to its technical definition, yes, a meme is an idea that transmits from person to person. According to its colloquial definition, no, when most people use the term "meme", they're referring to a screenshot. In the 2000s, though, it mostly referred specifically to image macros.

We had memes before anchorman...
Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 32d
An in fact, that itself is a meme. Memes aren’t just pictures on the internet.
The term itself comes from the 70s.

Replace that with Montey Python and you'd be correct. There were memes around when Anchorman came out.

Family Guy is another one you can toss in the mix. Futurama, Simpsons, SeaLab 2021, Space Ghost.
Lots "I know the thing" memes.
Although I despise that I have to sit through my generation shoehorning The Office and Ron Swanson into EVERY conversation they can...
