In America it would be our cops making the pilgrimage in the first place
SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 60 pts · 28d
To be fair authoritarian attitudes are a problem in cops worldwide.
cmbabul@slrpnk.net · 27 pts · 28d
It’s almost like the problem is the cops

My faith in our society has been shook

To some degree, sure. But I would argue the majority of police in the Nordic countries are not power tripping authoritarians. Some are, but the majority of them are professional and prioritize de-escalation.
db_null@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -4 pts · 27d
I would argue otherwise. There may be less powertripping bastards than in the US, but that bar couldn't be much lower.
Police don't need to be individual assholes, if they follow illegal orders and are protecting their colleagues when they commit crimes the outcome is all the same. Their personal motivation behind it is irrelevant.
DaTingGoBrrr@lemmy.ml · 5 pts · 27d
Do you have anything to support your claim that police in the Nordic countries are following illegal orders and/or are acting like a gang criminals like the American police?
There are reasons as to why we don't have a lot of reporting on police violence or situations getting out of hand in the Nordic area.

Nordic as in Sweden, Norway or Finland no. I saw it mpre broadly as Northern Europe, including Austria as that's what the article is about.
In Austria the limited statistics say that on average 60 cases are reported daily where police uses excessive force. https://www.derstandard.at/story/3000000030899/gew-wie-steht-es-mit-der-polizeigewalt-in-oesterreich
Germany has been performing border controls that are illegal, and continues to do so. https://www.br.de/nachrichten/bayern/gericht-erklaert-grenzkontrollen-in-drei-faellen-fuer-rechtswidrig,VODHEOi
Also Amnesty has reported several times about the racist police brutality in Germany. https://www.amnesty.de/aktuell/deutschland-polizeigewalt-rassismus-lorenz-nelson
And the laws that are being changed by the government to give police the carte blanche to go further and ignore more of the constitution. https://www.amnesty.de/pressemitteilung/deutschland-bundespolizeigesetz-modernisierung-gesetzesentwurf-kritik

Because they all train in America or Israel
Siegfried@lemmy.world · 29 pts · 28d
A honey trap.... or a house full of nazis?
Are people actually doing a pilgrimage to honor a genocidal sociopath?
Malyca@lemmy.zip · 27 pts · 28d
I think we all need to reconcile with the fact that a huge portion of the populace is incredibly evil.
i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca · 16 pts · 28d
It’s a whole thing. I stayed in an inn in a town in Germany where Hess or one of the other high ranking Nazis was buried and the innkeeper told us there’s always people coming into town and leaving little offerings on the grave. He described them as “creatures depositing leavings that the city had to keep cleaning up”. I’d hoped he meant it was vandalism, but no.
onion_dude@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 28d
That description reminds me of the way Guillermo del Toro described the vampires in The Strain. Makes me wonder if theres some symbolism about them he was referring to
Corporal_Punishment@feddit.uk · 9 pts · 27d
As much as we want to think he was an unpopular monster, he wasnt. The people supported him.
And people still support the idea that some races should be imprisoned/deported/exterminated for the crime of having a different shade of skin tone or religion.
It was Jews then, its Muslims now.
prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 27d
It was not just Jews. It's was also trans people. And homosexuals. And Roma. And the disabled. And...
Also, any "alliance" they may have had with Muslims was purely pragmatic. They may not have had been targeted for systematic extermination (though how many were there in Germany at that time anyway?), but Nazi troops regularly committed atrocities against Soviet Muslims.
Corporal_Punishment@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 27d
You get my point though?
REDACTED@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 26d
I get what you're saying, but I think you meant Palestinians, not Muslims. US is in bed with some Muslim countries and much of Palestine is christian. Muslim is not a race, it's the world's largest religion spanning across all races and continents.
Corporal_Punishment@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 26d
Let's be realistic. Deep down, they hate all Muslims. They just find some are allies of convenience.
See Zia Yusuf in the UK. He thinks he'll be protected if Reform get into power. He is either incredibly naive or he just doesn't want to believe they're all a bunch of bigots. They barely try to hide it.
Last week the likes of Matt Goodwin and Robert jenrick were losing their shit over the fact that Mohammed was the most popular name for male babies last year.
Completely glossing over the fsct that the other 9 from the top 10 were traditional English names that when combined massively outnumbered the top 1.
REDACTED@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 26d
Dislike is not comparable to genocide. I dislike all religions, including Judaism (Jews) and Muslims. That does not mean I'd personally do something, I just avoid it/disregard it/dismiss it.
While I'd probably protest any form of Islamification (sharia law) in my country, that does not imply I'm against Palestine. It's just vastly different region. It's safe to assume they'd protest against European values.

Apparently
inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 28d
I can only work up so much enthusiasm for hearing about a new police station but this sounds like the best solution.
It's sensible to reformat the building as opposed to demolishing, even the vacant lot would have the same pilgrimage problem. Anything existing there would be a hateful pilgrimage location. I guess actively and inherently patrolled sidesteps all that.
BillyClark@piefed.social · 7 pts · 28d
I'll say the same thing about Hitler's birthplace that I've said about Trump tower and every other building that had Trump's name or association. Have the government acquire it, as well as all of the surrounding land. Knock down all of the buildings in the neighborhood. Re-parcel out the land so that it is not clear which parcel had the original building. Change the streets even, if it helps.
Then, convert the entire area to high density government-owned affordable housing.

Cops still bastards. Buildings are ok.

I dunno, Mussolini had that sick ass headquarters building. Despite the man being a fascist piece of shit.

Hugo Boss approves.
j/k I see your point, it isn't enough to replace one authoriatarian over another. How convenient for the "current" administration with pressure from the ADF

I recently passed through Braunau, Hitler’s birthplace, on my way to a wedding in Hungary.
There’s absolutely nothing to see there.
If this is supposed to become an international gathering place for all those megalomaniacal Nazis, Musk, Trump, and their ilk will have to shell out a lot of money to make their pathetic ideas seem less pathetic than they already are.
I think even they lack the money for that, since their attempts across all of today’s media are already costing them a fortune, and they only succeed with people who are already so useless that humanity would be much better off without them.
Vinylraupe@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 27d
Well the police were probably one of his more liked tools. I dont see the deterrent here.
Vincentmario@feddit.uk · 5 pts · 27d
I don't think the Austrian police are supporting Nazi ideology
Lileath@lemmy.blahaj.zone · -1 pts · 27d
You thought wrong then. Austria is really right wing and police in pretty much any country are more likely to be fascists than the normal population
Vincentmario@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 24d
That doesn't mean the Austrian police are nazis. Being right wing also doesn't make you a nazi. I thought correctly

Perhaps they can also install many public toilets, and advertise a safe, loosely patrolled area to enjoy commemorative anal sex.
It may not deter all of the Nazis, but still manage to be a fitting memorial.

BRILLIANT!
