It's funny that you can tell how old people are based on what version of windows they find nostalgic and how it moved from windows xp to windows 7

Man, here I am nostalgic for windows 3.11, 12 floppy disks on a beige solid metal computer with an A: drive and slot for a B: drive old IBM mouse, fat 12 inch crt monitor on a bread stand from my dads work (because what is a computer desk at this point) something like 3 mb of ram and most gam3s ran from the floppy disks themselves executed from DOS. I mean I was young but that is my earliest experience of windows and computers.

The only things in that photo that existed when I was still "visiting" the internet were the speakers and the foot.

It feels like giving away our humanity for a dirty street drug.

No nostalgia meme should include the icon for Internet Explorer. Nobody on the planet is nostalgic for that pile of garbage.

valkyre09@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 9d

Would you believe there was a time in history when internet explorer 6 was too big to download, so I used to install it from an ISP CD.

Freeserve (uk) if i remember correctly. They also branded the loading animation in the top corner so you had to rummage around the program files folder and remove the branding gif to get the original globe / windows flag back.

Those were the same days that running xp pre SP1 online was computer suicide. Microsoft sent out free CDs to upgrade it was so bad.

Anyway, thanks for taking a walk down memory lane with me. My back hurts

You should be able to initialize a modem with Hayes AT commands to properly negotiate the fastest connection to get on the internet :P
