US president’s statement is latest sign that negotations to end war and reopen strait of Hormuz have stalled
Donald Trump has said he will demand that Iran pay compensation for the deaths of thousands of US soldiers and Iran’s own civilians killed in recent decades in the latest sign his negotiations to end the war and reopen the strait of Hormuz have reached an impasse.
The US president is trying to end conflicts in Iran, Gaza and Lebanon, and his additional demands of Iran are likely to provoke anger in Tehran at the same time as Israel has rejected Trump’s terms for a 15-point roadmap to end the war in Gaza.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he was issuing the demand for war reparations in response to Iranian negotiators making similar claims for damages for the five-month war that has killed thousands and devastated Iran’s military and economy.

What a petulant fucking tantrum-throwing, diaper-shitting, spoiled gods-damned toddler.
“Trying to end the conflict” and “demanding reparations from the nation who got attacked” do not equate.
It’s like dealing with the playground bully. Always a new demand.

Was coming to say similar.
Scumbag reducing all of those deaths on both sides to some sort of game he thinks he is playing. It really and truly shows that he has neither the ability to comprehend what the fuck he is actually doing in the world, nor fit to be an elected official anywhere in the world, let alone president of the United States.

As we all know, when negotiations are stalled you just need to demand more from the other guy until they give in and give you everything you want. Obviously, why peace talks have failed so far is Trump simply didn't demand enough from Iran. Art of the Deal!

I thought that the "Art of the Deal" at the end was enough to make it obvious I was aiming towards sarcasm.

I guessed it was, but there are a lot of crazy people. Just consider half the voters voting for Trump in the US presidential election voted for Trump.
Any one of them could in theory have written something pretty close to your post.

Iran Rules Out Talks With Trump, Says Will Wait Until His Term Ends In 2029

That's just a pressure tactic. They're not actually hilding off on talks for years
From a crisis bargaining perspective, it makes perfect sense to say but little sense to actually do
Iran doesn't need to beat the US militarily, it just needs to hold out until Trump loses politically. Saying there will be no talks adds to that pressure. Waiting 3 years leaves too much room for markets to adjust, or the US to find a strategy out of this quagmire
They'll deal when Trump is desperate enough to agree to the bulk of their terms
Edit: Since this will be an unpopular comment without providing some proof
March 23rd: Trump claims deal is close, Iran denies talks are taking place
2 days later...
March 25th: Iran rejects US deal, counters with their own
Both countries lied here, for different reasons. Trump wanted to assauge the markets, Iran wanted to project the stronger bargaining position
Saying there are no talks is a negotiating tactic Iran frequently uses, although we don't need historical precedence to know that's the case. Any rational actor would still engage in negotiations, and Iran has generally acted rationally in this war. They also like to use indirect negotiations to save face, as they did in my example

That was before Trump started violating "cease-fires" on a weekly basis to depress the stock market. There is no intelligent reason at all to have diplomatic discussions with an irrational actor that will be dead from old age or a stroke sooner rather than later.
I guess we'll see who is right in a month or two.
Taldan@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 3d
It didn't take a month or two. As part of negotiations, Iran is now also demanding the wars in Gaza and Lebanon end

During a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Tehran, Cong Peiwu, Rezaei emphasized that the strategic waterway will remain closed unless the United States changes its behavior and accepts Iran’s stipulated conditions, which have been communicated to Washington through intermediaries.
That's quite literally a not negotiation, that's an ultimatum. They aren't negotiating anything. Try again.

I almost get it. The Iranian regime really are a bunch of bastards. This is not, however, the response of a measured diplomat and statesman, or even a realpolitik operator. It's the response of an arrogant, petulant, ignorant baby-man who's determined to take the bait every time and cede the moral high ground to an utterly inhumane regime that makes his kiddie-pool fascism look quaint. Not doing that is a big part of why the former administrations in both parties never did something as stupid as kick off open military conflict with Iran.
