Is it hard to get off of a non-pourous surface? Seems like a razor blade would make quick work of it, particularly if the protective lens is glass or similar scratch resistant material.

BurgerBaron@quokk.au · 2 pts · 1d

Hmm that's true. Fun fact: two-part polyurethane foams can hit 160'C while reacting, but you'd need a Froth-Pak or a similar dual cartridge spray gun brand.

We should be careful about spreading this news around. It might trigger a wave of copycat attacks and significantly impair Flock's ability to go about their business of spying on everyone. And the more this happens the less likely they are to win new contracts, so their whole business could end up in serious trouble. So think about whether you really want to get these stories seen by lots of people.

Be careful with the type that is meant to insulate walls, they spray a lot farther, and make a real mess. Be sure to wear PPE if you use this type. A full face mask is recommended.

Vicinus@piefed.zip · 10 pts · 2d (3 replies)

You could have the 2 parts separated internally in the same ball (kind of like a cold/hot pack that you "crack" to activate). On breaking (or shooting) the barrier is broken and the two parts mix.

That's easy to remove. It would be really sad if someone slapped some etching cream on the lense though. That's a non-removable, chemically permanent change to the glass.

Hydroflouric acid dont get it on you

otacon239@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 3d (3 replies)

Our chemistry teacher warned us about this stuff. She told us that if you get it on you, don’t hesitate to call out immediately because you will not feel anything and think you’re okay until it’s too late and under your skin. And then it burns. So, so much worse than if you had washed it off right away.

sartalon@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 3d

I used this in 8th grade to etch glass for art class.

It's not as bad as all that. Just wear gloves and if you get some on you, just rinse it off.

It won't start dissolving your flesh or anything and needs time to even etch the glass.

socsa@piefed.social · 1 pts · 2d

I had the same thought, but I assume the lens would have a coating this wouldn't harm.

Here's a crime scene there are no apparent witnesses and no fingerprint evidence, please help.

What exactly did they expect to happen here? Even if somebody did come forward and point the finger of blame st someone, there's no actual evidence you could go to court with.

There are about 200 species of wasps. You've heard of paper wasps, this must've been foam wasps.

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 18 pts · 3d

you can help us by giving us all the location of the flock and axon cameras.

sam_the_tech@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 3d (8 replies)

I may be paranoid, but I’m starting to think this is some sort of test...why wouldn’t they just install 360° cameras. Like with Skydio lobbying the US government to ban DJI drones. It feels like they want us to take these cameras down. Is flock the only camera system in the US? Why are we so focused on flock cameras? Anyway, I’m off to the hardware store to pick up some expanding foam for a DIY home project in my garage.

scutiger@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 3d (3 replies)

There are other cameras. Axon is another company that sells them, but their system only runs regionally, not nationally, which is why Flock was chosen in the first place. A bunch of towns are removing Flock cameras and replacing them with Axon, and a lot of people haven't heard of Axon so it goes unnoticed.

halcyoncmdr@piefed.social · 11 pts · 3d (1 reply)

I don't understand how people haven't heard of Axon. They make Taser, it is literally their brand name for the device. They also make the vast majority of police body cams, and related systems for things like vehicles now.

They're mentioned in the news basically every time something happens with their shit.

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 3d

just need someone to make news over axon, or go viral over it.

sam_the_tech@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

Well shit

Formfiller@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Axon is the up and coming flock replacement and they’re talking about hiding the cameras in street lights. Axon is Blackrock.

sam_the_tech@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

I see now

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 3d (1 reply)

they want us focused on flock, so they can set up axon, which is less known and probably hide it better.

Zuberiii@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 12 pts · 2d (2 replies)

Too many people are going to "sneak up" on a flock camera just to have it ID their phone

FreddiesLantern@leminal.space · 4 pts · 2d

DmMacniel@feddit.org · 2 pts · 18h

When you do Actions always keep your phone at home.

I know exactly who did that. I just can’t remember their names, genders or anything else important that may be helpful in getting to the bottom of this malarkey.

Sooooo, reckon there’s that.

SacralPlexus@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2d (2 replies)

It’s ok another commenter positively identified the perp as Benjamin Netanyahu so hopefully the authorities can arrest him.

6stringringer@lemmy.zip · 4 pts · 2d

Now wait a second, that sure does ring a bell. Yep, you nailed it. Iā€m fairly certain it was him.

cabillaud@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2d

That should be something police can handle, I mean he surely can't run so fast?

peetabix@sh.itjust.works · 10 pts · 2d

Whoever it was, they were playing boardgames with me that day.

melsaskca@lemmy.ca · 9 pts · 2d

So what have we learned in this "all surveillance, all the time!" world? You sneak up on things from behind. That sticky, hard to remove, expanding foam is not that expensive and is available everywhere now that winter is on it's way.

Jaysyn@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2d (4 replies)

I need this in paintball format.

Also, would it be illegal to put bounties on dead Flock cameras?

explodicle@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 2d

Absolutely, horribly illegal.

Hey you know how it's legal to bet on wildfires? It would sure be nuts if people started legally betting on flock camera vandalism.

BionicBeaver3000@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

Since polymarket (& friends) is now somehow legal gambling (due to its political connections), one could bet against the event of flock cameras suddenly failing, and then somehow lose that bet due to unforeseen incidents...

Duamerthrax@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d (1 reply)

I don't think you can make expanding foam balls in your garage that would work. You would need to encapsulate the pressurized polyurethane and seal it in something strong enough to withstand the gun launching it. Just loading marbles on the other hand...

kgbbot@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 2d

What's a marbles flight trajectory? I feel like it's a hateful knuckle ball with no spin

moopet@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 2d

I fear that the obvious response to this is for flock cameras to to increase in number, so one can always be looking at another to see who's decorating it.

HubertManne@piefed.social · 6 pts · 3d (1 reply)

this is aweful but I need to know how aweful it is. like how much damage does this do. does it pretty much destroy the whole thing and it has to be completely replaced?

SpacePanda@mander.xyz · 1 pts · 3d

Technically if this camera was yours and you didnt want to buy another, you could clean this off. It is a real mess, but, from their perspective its probably a replacement, also calling it vandalism hints at this too

Bonus@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 3d

Definitely not the handiwork of an insulation crew. Probably best to move on to investigating pastry chefs instead.

HugeNerd@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 3d
gandalf_der_13te@feddit.org · 4 pts · 2d (5 replies)

would spray paints also work?

Winning@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2d

I was at lowes the other day and saw these cheap tiny hand "power drills" that recharge using USB-C. They were like $12, but they didn't look like they could do a whole lot. They'd probably struggle with wood, but they could probably glide right through a plastic clamshell and mangle some electronics in 2 seconds. I don't know how that would be useful to me, but at that price point I could just throw it away if I didn't want it anymore. I could buy 20 of them and let my friends throw them away for me.

Anyway I was just looking for some new blinds at lowes, I'm big into home improvement. I don't know why I'm rambling about these cheap drills, I'm not even sure what message board I'm on. This place is about home improvement right?

captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Hell, I bet hair spray would be enough. Anything to fog the lens.

cabillaud@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d (2 replies)

You need something harder to wash.

Duamerthrax@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2d

Something with a solvent or acid to etch the glass of the lens.

captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 2d

Meh, let em send someone out to pull a slice of scotch tape off.

Hueristic_Autistic@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d

I, "Don't condone this" šŸ˜ :Metal bonding liquids and a hubcap. Then after they're disabled, go in and ram a rebar into the hubcap where the lens is. Just make sure you don't have a phone on you and wear a mask.

resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe · 3 pts · 3d (6 replies)

You definitely shouldn’t cover them with plastic bags.

Definitely don’t point high-powered green lasers at the optical element.

baguettefish@discuss.tchncs.de · 13 pts · 3d (2 replies)

laser pointers require direct line of sight, and if you can destroy a camera sensor with a laser it almost certainly isn't portable. so maybe don't try, so you reduce the risk of jail time.

Edit: oops I was wrong, there are portable 25W laser pointers, they're just very expensive. Nice.

resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe · 1 pts · 2d (1 reply)

A laser strong enough to disable it is certainly portable.

If you’re talking about vaporizing it, then maybe.

baguettefish@discuss.tchncs.de · 2 pts · 2d

To get a guaranteed kill you'd probably need a dozen watts. I don't know of any laser pointers with that amount of power. 5W is doable but wouldn't guarantee a kill.

Edit: nevermind, found some blue laser pointers with that kind of output. Even a 25W pointer. I haven't looked at laser pointers in over a decade so I was expecting much lower values. Guess I should've looked them up first.

echodot@feddit.uk · 9 pts · 3d (2 replies)

Take a picture of the empty street and then prop it up in front of the camera sensor. I've always wanted to see if this actually works.
