Guys he's still around, from time to time. He's probably listening right now

arotrios@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 2d

If he is, I hope he knows the Fediverse reached out and touched faith...

You had to appreciate him when he was here. He's in a better place now, and you need to carry his torch

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

But he's going to come again in the Last of Days to deliver judgement unto evildoers, isn't he?

Skullgrid@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

He's leaving me on read on matrix, he gone for good 😭

Just like human jesus did with all of my prayers and supplications 😔

PugJesus@piefed.social · 34 pts · 1d (10 replies)

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our Piefeds, but in ourselves.

I still check in from time to time, check reports, make sure there's no spam. It's just that... I don't have the energy to move the comms again, and I don't want to put in the effort when the task on the Fediverse seems Sisyphean.

arotrios@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 1d (6 replies)

Things I have learned since making the plea above...

  • People can handle a pug as Christ, but not as Superman.
  • Apparently the Fediverse thinks you're both a fascist and a commie. This indicates that you're doing something right.
  • You've been doing this all for us. This is clearly the problem, because we're grumpy ungrateful motherfuckers and keep rolling your boulder back down the hill. The solution? Trebuchets, coupled with a healthy dose of "I don't give a fuck if those mofos don't get out of the way this time".
  • Some people clearly should never own pets.

But despite all the trials, trolls, and tribulations, you answered our call. My faith in Dog is restored.

Also, been following you since the kbin days. You're Fediverse famous now, dawg. That's almost 5% of the way to internet famous, and also means that when you leave, the Fediverse wilts like a first year history major trying to describe French-Indochina in the 50s. Like the Picard Maneuvar and Satan's Maggoty Cumfart, your pugly mug is now one of the faces of this place, and with you gone, we're stuck with maggoty cumfarts and star trek memes.

In other words, Reddit.

So, if your faith in what you post ever gets lost in the trolling, know that for every grumpy asshole, there's a faithful shitposter looking to you for inspiration, or at least directions to a quality copper merchant in ancient Sumeria.

PugJesus@piefed.social · 13 pts · 1d (4 replies)

May many respitorially challenged small dogs bless you, my child! ✋

I actually always felt very appreciated on here by most people! Sadly, it's purely an issue of energy. Rebuilding the audience on comms on another instance just is too much to do a fourth time. I do still wish the Fediverse the best!

arotrios@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

Totally understand - went through a similar period myself after kbin died - only now really getting my groove back.

To mitigate the issues with instance instability and mod dumbfuckery, I've been considering starting something self-hosted with ActivityPub integration (Wordpress plugin works okish), but it's a lot of work for the questionable payoff of being able to shitpost through the ages.

What the Fediverse really needs is a User Data Import/Export standard, where you can easily export your profile, communities, posts and comments to another instance.

But what I would say to you is that you've got enough name recognition and clout now that, if you get the energy to try again, your audience will travel with you. You don't necessarily need to rebuild what you built on Piefed on another instance - just move to a place where its easier to continue the parts of this that you enjoy doing, and the audience will follow.

JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social · 2 pts · 23h (2 replies)

Okay, I hate to lurk, PJ, but I admit that every couple weeks I check to see if you're still active on the FV, and I just caught the above. Yeah, and maybe that sucks that I can do so, because I don't believe there's a 'privacy of content mode' here yet, like on Reddit. No doubt coming soon, but still.

Cutting to the chase-- based on why you scaled things down here, may I ask you something?

If so, and based on Rimu insisting that there should be daily vote-capping for yadda-yadda technical reasons (implying that it absolutely has to be X number), what would you have been happy with as a compromise for X? Or was it moreso that you just hated the whole bloody concept and refused to cohabitate under such conditions?

PugJesus@piefed.social · 2 pts · 12h (1 reply)

I hate the concept on its own, don't get me wrong, but it was that I managed to hit it so quickly (before it was even announced) which soured me on staying. If my experience is going to be enshittified, I would rather just... not.

Contributing factors were concerns about how this would affect other 'power users' with their experiences likewise enshittified, and thus growth and sustainability; and the broader 'anti-social-media' posture it reflected.

It's social media on the internet, and on the Fediverse at that. I have no expectation of privacy for anything I post here, nor much desire for it, lmao.

JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social · 1 pts · 4h

Thanks for the reply. You know, when I think of "enshittification," I usually think of it in the original sense, which I understand to be the capitalist milking of an idea / enterprise / product in order to extract additional profit, meanwhile cheapening it until it's eventually little more than a useless, dried out husk. Sort of an Invasion of the Body-Snatchers thing, yeah?

In this case it seems like Rimu specifically explained why the vote-capping update was made and what it was for, which IIRC was to help prevent PF sites from getting bogged down with too much data to track, which can actually impact server performance. I.e., not for profit, but for sustainability. Kind of a reminder that not every step forward in PF development is going to be positive for everyone; some can be annoying.

So again, what kind of vote-cap number would you actually be happy with? As a patron, this is something which I feel I could bring up with him. I feel like it would actually be worth paying for if we could boost that number until it worked for both he and you.

I think I speak for everyone here when I say that we love your contributions, and I personally feel like they add a lot of value to the FV. Plus of course, I'd certainly rather see you contented here than annoyed with the project.

OpenStars@discuss.online · 3 pts · 1d

I did the math, and it says that Threadiverse famous is only <0.001% of internet famous. Though for that I had to assume that every person on earth has access to the interwebs, so maybe it's twice that, so >0.001% then⁉️

And 5% is definitely >0.001% so actually, nvm, the math does check out after all.

Kolanaki@pawb.social · 11 pts · 1d

Spend less time moderating and more time giving us the contex on weird historical facts! I haven't learned anything since you've been absent. You are actively making me dumber by not hanging out anymore.

What happened?

arotrios@lemmy.world · 99 pts · 2d (11 replies)

Goodbye Post

Looks like their Piefed instance incorporated a vote limit impacting a users ability to interact with their audience, and the holy one just threw up their hands at the thought of having to migrate due to instance dumbfuckery again.

NaibofTabr@infosec.pub · 75 pts · 2d (1 reply)

What a weird policy decision. I don't think the Fediverse needs artificial scarcity or austerity.

sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz · 9 pts · 2d

I wouldn't agree with it but I see why they do it. If you listen to the instance operators and comm mods talk a big priority is they're trying not to just build another reddit. So occasionally instance devs get these ideas to try and deincentivise some of the toxic patterns reddit encouraged.

atro_city@fedia.io · 30 pts · 2d (7 replies)

I don't understand. A vote limit? As in a user can't vote more than X amount of times per day or something? If so, how does that impact the ability to interact with their audience?

arotrios@lemmy.world · 36 pts · 2d (4 replies)

The holy one had many followers, and often had more than 250 people to bestow their blessed upvote upon. Pedantry should never get in the way of good works.

atro_city@fedia.io · 5 pts · 2d (3 replies)

Oh it's the reverse??? A user cannot get more than X amount of votes? Dafak? Now that's crazy.

Blaze@piefed.zip · 9 pts · 1d

OP isn't correct in this case, I think it's to stay aligned with the tongue in cheek tone of the post.

The voting limit is for votes given, not received.

Schmuppes@lemmy.today · 4 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Have an upvote, just to test the limits of your instance.

OpenStars@discuss.online · 1 pts · 1d

fedia.io is Mbin, so can receive basically infinite upvotes.

Only certain PieFed instances are shadow-censoring offered upvotes, and unfortunately the feature is enabled by default (opt-out rather than opt-in).

PugJesus@piefed.social · 2 pts · 12h (1 reply)

I don’t understand. A vote limit? As in a user can’t vote more than X amount of times per day or something? If so, how does that impact the ability to interact with their audience?

Basically, it made my experience as a user shitty, in part because I was a frequent poster and thus frequently had a number of comments on my posts which were generally positive contributions and I wanted to upvote.

atro_city@fedia.io · 1 pts · 5h

A... weird decision, if I may say so.

Piefed is built around social credits and a karma system that favors homogenization. Unfortunately all this kind of shit gets really messy at scale. I understand trying to organize the chaos, but I think the thing that works about Lemmy is mainly that it's small, overlooked, and by some good fortune the number of assholes is relatively low in percentage currently. I'm not sure it could ever scale well more than 5x without becoming a cesspool. Until the walls start to implode, keeping it simple and open is for the best. Piefed is chasing it's tail.

Hegar@fedia.io · 11 pts · 2d (14 replies)

Meh...

At first i was pleased to see the content. Plenty of cool pics of old things.

A lot of it was just reposting low effort memes, which is not at all a problem, it's just no great loss.

But the more i interacted with them, the more i saw long waffly comments without a firm point. Or saw them arguing in favour of common misconceptions, or in favour of outdated "heirarchies are a good thing" understandings of history, or in favour of arguments that more recent research casts a lot of doubt on.

What's the legacy of a profilic poster of middling content? Prolific is good, fediverse needs content. But the content itself was no great loss.

arotrios@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 2d (5 replies)

Have you ever met a pug? They're ALL like that. Try arguing philosophy with one - you'll end up with piss all over your shoes.

But I ask you this, how many pugs post historical content in meme format?

We only know of one, a most extraordinary one, one who only wanted to upvote more.

Now, because of Piefed's pedantry, Dog has abandoned us, and you're saying good riddance because he got some mud on the carpet once. Shame on you, sir. I hope you have the wisdom to never own pets.

Hegar@fedia.io · -1 pts · 2d (2 replies)

I dunno i think the better analogy is a cat bringing dead birds like 3+ times a day.

Cool, that's really sweet, it's an impressive volume and get that you're trying to do me a solid but that's not actually useful to me, makes me sad for the birds and the amount makes it more annoying, not less.

arotrios@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d (1 reply)

I stand by my original point. You clearly should not own pets.

How many dogs have anti-communist brainworms that make them constantly punch left? I can get along fine with just about anyone, dog, human, etc so long as they're not demanding I share their exact perspective on every country in the world and denouncing me as a fascist otherwise. Actual dogs make for much more pleasant conversational partners in my experience, though trying to reason with either is equally unproductive.

PugJesus@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d

Cute way of describing Uyghur genocide denial.

A lot of it was just reposting low effort memes, which is not at all a problem, it’s just no great loss.

Piefed/Lemmy is my main social media. So I didn't see those memes on insta or r$ddit or facebook etc, I only saw them here. So to me, it is indeed a great loss because now I don't see them at all.

the more i interacted with them

Yeah, I agree that PJ got in arguments that left me thinking: Why? But everyone on the fediverse is a little eccentric, and he is definitely one of us.

DaMonsterKnees@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 2d

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. They are a fine human with a long track record of quality, intelligent content and discourse. Rethink your position, human.

DarkCloud@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2d (4 replies)

On content: they were saying that bringing up Lysenkoism and saying communist societies didn't actively WANT to have famines was the equivalent of Holocaust Denial (which I don't think it is, the Nazis were pretty intentional in doing the Jewish Holocaust).

On context: Yes this was part of their work moderating a TankieJerk community.

I don't really get people who are bothered by Tankies, during a time of rightwing fascism. Tankies are such a small minority that they're pretty much irrelevant and can be easily avoided or ignored as inconsequential.

PugJesus@piefed.social · 8 pts · 1d

That's a cute way of saying "I was downplaying the Holodomor and Great Chinese Famine by spreading misinformation that doesn't even align with the basic timeline of events and got banned for it"

I don’t really get people who are bothered by Tankies, during a time of rightwing fascism. Tankies are such a small minority that they’re pretty much irrelevant and can be easily avoided or ignored as inconsequential.

In the US, sure.

On the Fediverse, where red fash are a significant proportion and regularly spread misinformation about, say, historical genocides, or fucking North Korea?

On the Fediverse, they're a problem. Hence why it was important for me to speak up on the problem on the Fediverse, and not, say, when I was on Reddit.

OpenStars@discuss.online · 1 pts · 2d (2 replies)

Sure, bc the mantra of bOtH sIdEs SaMe had nothing to do with Trump winning the last USA election. (/s) Granted that the Threadiverse itself is wholly inconsequential though.

If you listen to pretty much anyone arguing about us over on Reddit, explaining why they gave this place a legit try for multiple years but left and vehemently refuse to ever consider coming back, it's primarily tankies that they themselves cite as the reason why they left.

Though it is unclear if they realized that hexbears aren't actually tankies so much as a more pure form of troll that believes in nothing except dunking on people. It does, however, somewhat go with the territory of denying factual reality in preference to the echo chamber consensus?

Essentially in man vs. bear, people are choosing the bears, and the incels being avoided would do well to ask why that is, if we ever want to grow the Threadiverse.

NightFantom@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Trump did more for clean energy than any democrat president! (Not /s but also not intentionally so idk what to say here)

OpenStars@discuss.online · 1 pts · 1d

I mean... , yeah. 🤪

People couldn't stand the thought of the lying "Demoncrats" (also not "fully" /s, in the objective sense that while I would not make that choice, people sometimes do call them that, plus also they legit do such all the time, like "Biden isn't senile" - yeah right!), and while they did not so much like Trump himself personally, they did take a gamble and rolled the dice a second time, playing (almost literally, if you know what I mean) a game of Russian Roulette, just on the off chance that even a stopped watch might do better twice a day than Kamala.

The liberals really gotta work on branding. "You should eat your vegetables" only works for so many people, leaving vast swaths of centrists to prefer to simply not vote.

I will say this about the Republicans: recently they are better at the game of politicking, with all that that entails. Yes they will eventually eat their own and tear it all down, but in the meantime they pitch a bigly tent (using the best words - this one phrase is /s! 😜) and welcome anyone to vote for them to get into power, and then they only betray them after that, not preemptively as Biden did by lying about his merely being sick. The art of compromise and many other skills seem to have been lost, and both sides are the same at least in one respect: both have been primarily relying upon the badness of the other side to win, less so any inherent goodness in their own. (But it did not need to be this way - Democrats set up HUGE infrastructure projects, and made gains in health - not so much healthcare itself obviously but like COVID policies - etc. These stories should have been TOLD more often and harder, but instead everyone focused on Biden's dementia, which tbf Trump did legit hide better than him, at the time.)

So tankies aren't even lying (all the time), as there is a hidden truth behind that - and then more lies behind that, but after that... maybe some truth again? Except I can't quite wrap my brain around the alternative fact that Russia is not an expansionist empire that invaded Ukraine, and instead the poor victim of aggressive Ukraine that somehow invaded them? Yeah, nevermind, even though a clock is correct twice a day, that does not mean that I should bother even so much as glancing at it if I want to know the time! 😂
