We all know that Mr Beast, Logan Paul, and KSI are all horrible people. Why do they still have subscribers?

I mean who is the president of the us?

DeathsEmbrace@lemmy.world · 43 pts · 1d (6 replies)

Elected not once... twice.

homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 1d

Enh. “Elected”.

Mac@mander.xyz · 5 pts · 20h (2 replies)

Will be three times before you know it

zjti8eit@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 19h (1 reply)

Wait I thought it was already 3

Doomsider@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 6h

Acthually, it is 4 times! He won back in 2000 but the lame stream media is too scared to admit it.

Duamerthrax@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 4h (1 reply)

Considering Trump and Musk both bragged about rigging the election, that's debatable.

DeathsEmbrace@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1h

Musk got people to vote by promising money which is illegal. I dont know much about the legal system in America but, there must be a lot of mentally disabled people to let it all happen and do nothing. Im not surprised after all most of these people lived through the leaded gasoline era.

Rhaedas@fedia.io · 8 pts · 1d

Look at some of the long term representatives long before. Same story. That can go for both parties, btw.

Same reason Carlin didn't go after the politicians. There wouldn't be a problem if the demand wasn't there. The public sucks.

notsosure@sh.itjust.works · 42 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Because the subscribers are horrible people too.

bizarroland@lemmy.world · 29 pts · 1d

Most of their subscribers are pre-teen kids and kids in their early teens who don't really have a strong enough sense of self to differentiate what they're being visually presented with with the external realities of that presentation. Combine that with parents that are too tired and too distracted with their own, quite possibly terrible media fixations and you have a perfect storm of negligence and predation.

I mean, Mr. Beast, as a whole, is a terrible thing, but his individual videos show people having fun doing interesting things, and you get to parasocially enjoy them. It's entertainment media geared towards kids, and it presents itself as being family-friendly, so the people who cannot look past the presentation believe it to be family-friendly.

philanthropicoctopus@thelemmy.club · 2 pts · 17h

Nah they mostly kids I think

HappyCatLuvs_U@lemmy.world · 30 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Some don't know, some don't care, some agree with their actions/opinions.

While it's important every individual develop and maintain a moral framework, individuals rarely if ever use morality as the sole basis for day to day decisions/actions.

The world just doesn't operate on a solely moral basis. Some don't consider the morality of mundane acts, some find the morality of a thing excusable/justifiable when considered, and some come to find their morals agree.

X@piefed.world · 9 pts · 1d

Having read the comments section of those three to get an idea, you sum it up very well. Very many don’t care, are oblivious as to why the “charity” is played to so much (re: mrbeast), fully agree with them, and frequently enjoy them doing objectively bad that shit older people won’t, possibly out of vicariousness. They just wanna sit there and watch Ow! My balls!

Blackfeathr@lemmy.world · 27 pts · 1d (6 replies)

Because there are a lot... A LOT of stupid/ignorant people in the world.

I have to interact every now and then with someone who is a MrBeast stan. He's in his 20s or 30s and has a kid of his own. He's also a fan of xxtentacion and even when he was confronted with facts about MrBeast being a scammer and abuser, and xxtentacion beating his pregnant girlfriend, he said it was just haters making up stories. I literally linked him an NBC article about whatever current controversial shit MrBeast was up to at the time, and he said that "y'know you really shouldn't trust .com domains."

Dude is a lost cause and he regularly tries to recruit others to watch MrBeast or buy his products.

SharkAttak@kbin.melroy.org · 16 pts · 1d (1 reply)

"y'know you really shouldn't trust .com domains."

So basically half of internet? What a stupid stance.

IsoKiero@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 5h

So basically half of internet? What a stupid stance.

"Don't trust half of the internet" is really not that stupid idea, although it should be much higher than half. But that approach from above is of course stupid on many different levels.

LarryBetraitor@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d (3 replies)

I don't disagree with Mr Beast being a scammer and abuser, and I also don't disagree with a domain not being untrustworthy just because it's a .com domain.

That being said, I should point out that the news/media isn't exactly reliable. NBC is no exception. Even if the article is true (which it most likely is), I wouldn't blame someone for not trusting NBC.

Blackfeathr@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I get it that the media is captured by billionaires but my point is that I don't think that NBC, a network that has been around for 100 years, would put their reputation on the line to publish lies about a random wealthy YouTuber, who likely has lawyers on retainer that could sue for libel if they really were making stuff up.

LarryBetraitor@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

"i DuNnO, mAn. TrUmP sUeS pEoPlE a LoT, sO tHeY mUsT bE fAkE111!!1!!1!"

hitmyspot@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 23h

That's not what they said though. They said a .com domain was not trustworthy. Its a disyrust of 'mainstream' media.

As you yourself point out, NBC is not automatically trustworthy, but the choice of domain is not the reason why. The billionaire and corporate influence, combined with clickbait journalism is why.

Someone not trusting NBC is fine. Someone choosing to believe that it's fake news just because it's mainstream media when it refers to verifiabke facts and a mainstream personality is a failure of our society to adapt to the online world. A failure of education and a failure of media control and regulation.

TORFdot0@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 20h (1 reply)

Because most children don’t know this and have unsupervised internet access

GreenBeard@lemmy.ca · 18 pts · 19h

In the words of Marilyn Manson, "Raise your kids better or I'll be raising them for you."

Kite@sh.itjust.works · 17 pts · 23h (1 reply)

Because most people don't know. Most people are not spending hours online doomscrolling politics, pedos and such. I'm from Mr. Beast's area and no one here has a clue. Most of my coworkers do think a lot of his products are stupid, though.

criss_cross@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 23h

My wife who is normally a pretty well read person feels that MrBeast is great and is “one of the more generous content creators “

Some people just don’t wanna take their head out of the sand for crappy videos

JakoJakoJako13@piefed.social · 12 pts · 1d

They're not targeting me and you. They're targeting kids. Their whole thing is be kid friendly enough to take advantage of that lane while still being horrible people. Kids have always had a crazy "don't to this at home" type of influence in life. Evel Knieval. Pro Wrestling. Jackass. Now it's these guys. They're more insidious because their reach is way larger and easier to get. A smart person looks at them and goes 'this is shit.' What if you don't know any better? What group is that? Kids.

BladeFederation@piefed.social · 9 pts · 1d

There are plenty of horrible people that exist

Rooster326@programming.dev · 9 pts · 19h (2 replies)

Because you are still talking about them.

I've gone 3 weeks without seeing, or heading about them and well here you are..

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 19h (1 reply)

when the beast, KSI drama came out about lunchly last year, people were complaining about him and also wierdly defending him at the same time. thats how hes still here.

Rooster326@programming.dev · 5 pts · 12h

Again every time you bring them up, whether that is to denigrate, or defend, you're still talking about them.

You are giving each of them the power to live rent free in your head.

I don't even know who or what KSI is

zlatiah@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 15h

My understanding is... Being popular (a.k.a. having lots of subscribers) requires someone to be entertaining and be good at self-promotion. Being entertaining is independent from being a good person. For the latter, I once saw a streamer say something along the lines that anyone who is willing to do that level of self-promotion likely self-selects for at least some level of narcissistic traits

... and a lot of their subscribers are relatively young and likely don't care, probably

Duamerthrax@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 4h

Their fans are dumb children or dumb adults. They simply do not care so long as they are entertained.

I once saw someone defend Chris Brown by saying if you got rid of all the criminals in the entertainment industry, they're be no entertainment left.

That being said, I know about Beast and Paul, but what did ksi do?

homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1d

Why is facebook still a thing? Or Xitter?

EveryMuffinIsNowEncrypted@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 7 pts · 21h

Because there's a lot of people out there who are also terrible people.

Hond@piefed.social · 6 pts · 1d

I understand the concept of taste and having not the same as i do. I understand that kids, young, dumb, horrible[...] people exist. I understand that not anybody is a terminally online old fuck who remembers the good old pre web 2.0 days and is hypercritical of most modern online content. Then there is that orange fuck...

Still i also just dont get it. Its just garbage made by garbage people acting like garbage. Its so bad. Its so obvious. Why all these fucks still have careers just doesnt make any sense to me.

I think this is a rare case where i'm not out of touch and its the children who actually are wrong.

ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 5 pts · 23h (1 reply)

I'm aware Mr Beast exists, but I know nothing about him. I mean, I would have assumed he is awful, because money does that to people, but I'd have nothing to back up my gut feeling.

And I've never heard of KSI...

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 19h

he makes these fake challenge videos, which are targeting children as the audience, it seems popular with them, plus he made nasty "lunachables" with logan, and ksi, and his chocolates too, also he selling it overseas as well. hes very popular because of how he does his video to game the algorithims. mark rober recently started copying his video style too.

awmwrites@lemmy.cafe · 5 pts · 1d

There's a certain portion of people for whom an entertainer being a horrible person is a selling point. They like it when Logan Paul comes into a new hobby as a tourist, drives it into a commodity speculation market, then runs off with the money. It makes them feel good and superior. "Fuck those people who got scammed or screwed by externalities," they think. "Fucking idiots following the social contract, buncha NPCs. Not like me and Logan Paul. We're real people." And then they get scammed or screwed by externalities, and they blame poor people, or trans people, or immigrants, or someone else who has no social power because it can't be the fault of someone like Logan Paul. He's a real person, not one of those dregs of society screwing everything up for them. So they cheer on the people fucking them over and blame the people being fucked over with them. And it's very easy to stop: If an asshole can take power through structural incentives, we should change the structure to disallow such power from being amassed. But nobody wants to change the structure, because someday they could be Logan Paul, with all the money and the fame, and you can't take that from them, no matter how many people get fucked or scammed.

Cherry@piefed.social · 4 pts · 15h

Sheep culture.

magiccupcake@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

It's also not really an accident either. Their popularity is not fully natural.

All these companies, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, tiktok, reddit, etc are not apolitical entities, they gain by pushing right-wing content to certain demographics of vulnerable users.

I've noticed that personally I can't use algorithmic media like this because it will shove that content like that down my throat and I refuse. But not everyone has that self-awareness and introspection. And some of the content is really subtle, not enough to be noticable at first.

Example

remon@ani.social · 3 pts · 15h

Horrible people gonna subscribe to horrible people and there is no shortage of them.

radiofreebc@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 23h

The same reason Chris Brown still has female fans. They're rich and famous.

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 19h

MR beast said he "studied the algorithim and what makes youtubers/audience tic, so he made his videos accordingly targeting mainly children, plus hes selling his unhealthy snacks overseas as well, which he apparently has a fanbase with asian countries. i felt like logan felt out of the youtube sphere, thats why he pivoted maga now.

maxihuenu@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 1d (2 replies)

why mr beast is horrible?

Almacca@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 21h (1 reply)

Watch the Folding Ideas videos about his participation in the Beast Games.

Hazzard@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 19h

I mean... that was stupid, top to bottom, I think all that makes him not that bright, undercuts his image, and makes his company look more idiotic than I imagined possible for something so successful, but it doesn't really make him a bad person in the way I feel someone like Logan Paul is. It's not on the same level as something like a crypto rug pull.

itisileclerk@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 5h

Who are they? Not very popular I presume, first time hearing.

Flax_vert@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 1d

Apart from Logan Paul, what have they done? I don't follow celebrity drama and stopped watching mr beast after he stopped reviewing youtube intros

Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Because sheeple are horrible

SchwertImStein@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 4h

why is ksi horrible?

mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 23h

did you care about things like that when you were 14?

also you're vastly overestimating the average person's knowledge of such things relative to us chronically online folk

wraekscadu@vargar.org · 1 pts · 23h

Wait, why's KSI horrible? Not caught up with news about him.

Idk, I just find his laugh funny, which is why I watch him when he occasionally comes on my feed.

Mulligrubs@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 19h

I've never bothered reading or watching anything about them, I don't know that they're horrible because I don't pay attention to such drivel... I don't even know what they all look like. I've heard that they're horrible here and there, so what? Everyone is always horrible somewhere, no matter who

I watch youtube every day... just absolutely nothing about them. I'm sure there are millions of people that are also ambivalent about such news and just watch what they want to

FaceDeer@fedia.io · 0 pts · 1d

When you say "we all know", who are you talking about? Everybody that you know? That's a social bubble, a self-selected subset of "everybody."

"Horrible" is in the eye of the beholder, and people have differing opinions on stuff. You probably like and subscribe to someone that lots of other people would consider "horrible" in turn.

Johnnyvibrant@discuss.tchncs.de · -1 pts · 1d

Everyone that follows them is a terrible person. There are a lot of these arseholes around,
