Today’s game is Knights of the Old Republic. I played this like back in 2018 when it was on Game Pass and made it to the academy. Unfortunately I believe it was pulled from Game Pass (one of the reasons I never went back to it and one of the many reasons I avoid game pass now). Because of that I never got a chance to finish it. Fast forward about last year and I bought a copy. Now fast forward to now and I’ve really been wanting to play an RPG. I’m not sure if that will scratch that itch but this seemed the most appealing to me so it’s what I went with.
My guy is named Riblet. There’s not any particular reason behind that, I just looked at him and thought “yeah. He kind of looks like a Riblet.” So that’s what I named him. I made him a soldier. I remember on my last save I went with Scoundrel because I thought they were cool but I also really struggled in combat. So hopefully here I should do a little bit better.
The combat is fun. I like the concept though I do feel like it’s a lot of “stand there and trade shots until one party wins”. Not bad but definitely nothing amazing.
Admittedly after crashing on the planet I didn’t do a whole lot. I spent most the time trying to figure out how to get down to the undercity. I wandered into a bar, watched an arena match, wandered out, fought off some debt collectors, then wandered over to an elevator where I got yelled at followed by me trying to enter a military base. So far a lot of wandering around blind. It’s been a lot more fun than I was expecting. Hopefully next time I play though I’ll actually be able to find my way underground.

Saw that hallway and that Quarren and immediately knew, this is KOTOR. The thing about the combat in this game--which was like the one thing I hated about the game--is that it's actually all dice rolls under the hood, and the animations are completely meaningless. Like, it doesn't matter if you physically move your character out of the way of a blaster shot, the dice already got rolled before the shot was rendered, so if your save roll failed then you're still taking damage anyway.

The thing that gets me is the disconnect between the combat animations and what's actually happening as far as the game is concerned. If an attack visibly misses my character, especially because I specifically moved to dodge it, I expect to not take damage, y'know?
For contrast, Witcher 1 uses the same engine, but CDPR tweaked it so that while attacking is still all dice rolls that don't really sync with your animations, you can interrupt combat at any time with a dodge, and if an attack animation misses a hitbox then no dice get rolled at all.

Reminds me that a couple years ago I went back to Morrowind for the first time since I was a kid. Lot of nostalgia built up, and I still like it for what it is.
I hit some enemy (one of them little bugs on the trail to Balmorra) and the game's like "you missed". Excuse me? No, I didn't. I modded that out because that system only makes sense in turn-based RPGs or Disco-esque dialog that can easily and visually account for it; not in an action RPG. Damage resistance (or even immunity) can be fine, but attacks that visually hit but the game says miss never feel fair. Definitely a quirk of early games in the genre.
I do overall prefer its expanded skill and gear system over later entries' more simplified ones, though.

Literally one of my favorite games of all time. It's obviously quite dated by today's standards, but in my opinion it still has one of the best storyline of any star wars project. Absolutely incredible game, and thanks for stirring up all the memories. I hope you continue to enjoy it.

For me I just saw the hallway, had a weirdly vivid memory of running back and forth for ever in a similar place and thought... KOTOR? With no recollection of any other details. (It's all coming back to me now, memory is weird. Now I'm thinking about HK-47 for the 1st time in a decade or two)

I'd say gaming is my #1 hobby and has been for 20+ years and I still don't think I've ever played video games for 773 straight days, let alone found the time to post about it every day. So, in a very genuine way, I have the same questions as the original commenter.

I do finish games (Occasionally). I usually try to finish some games, though sometimes I drop them and circle back around.
As for money, I don’t really make any. I live in a large but fairly broke household (live with my family until I graduate) and I’m a college student.
The combination of that nets me a decent amount of Financial aid that I use to fund my hobbies (College takes what they’re owed and I get whatever’s leftover). I get maybe 2 financial aid refunds a semester and the rest I’m kind of broke.
I’ve also just got a huge backlog though going back years and take advantage of my local library for games too. Which is really nice

One of my favourite games of all time! Very obviously based on 3rd edition dungeons and dragons. Familiarity with that system helps you understand the quirks of the leveling system.

You gotta investigate an apartment. One way is convince a sith soldier to party, the other is mass breaking and entering and robbing the place blind. Eventually you can find some sith armor.
That being said, KOTOR is one im playing right now with kotor 2

That is a good game. Back in the day I did a light side and dark side run consecutively.

The way you're meant to the play the game is to get around 8 levels in your pre-Jedi class then get to Dantooine and end up with around 12 Jedi levels when you hit overall level 20. However, it is possible to avoid levelling up at all (except for one forced level up) before you get to Dantooine, and end up with 2 pre-Jedi and 18 Jedi levels. That's how I normally play.

i played this whole game on my phone about a decade ago. good story, but the gameplay is pure trash. playing it again now i gave up in dantooine, taris is really fun and then dantooine is super super boring

I played kotor before somehow knowing the twist but well after it came out. Which I've never cared about, spoilers. But I'm told I should be.
Anyway. My lady was a sniper and turns out, that was basically impossible for me to compete the (last boss? Nearly last? It was awhile ago) so I cheated and changed my class lol. I think it worked, storywise.

I’ve only played KoToR 1 & 2 to completion once each. Childhood favorites on the original Xbox. I’ve since collected the strategy guides for them though!
I’ll go back and replay them at some point.

I was like 8~10, and quite late; I had zero interest in learning whatsoever, and was incredibly stubborn. But I was a fan of the Star Wars, to the point where I figured out how the VHS machine worked so I could watch Luke fight Vader in slow motion. When I got into KOTOR for the first time, I quickly realized that I had to learn to read in order to understand player dialog options and what the aliens were saying via subtitles, and that was a significant motivation for me. Plus, the subtitles for English voiced lines, especially from the player's party during the intro level and Taris let me make quick associations between written and spoken words, which helped me catch up a lot.
