They added a "feature" where to improve the loading time of the start menu (which is already a fucked up thing to need to say) they briefly lift power limits from the cpu when you press start
Ah gotcha. So it's not strictly correct to call the whole start menu a react application, just a part of it that always loads when you press the start button.
I'm all for being correct, but MS absolutely deserves being clowned on for this.
In the end, every time you use your start menu you have to load the react crap. At that point, they could have done the whole thing in react with the same ramifications. I am all for correctness, but in real life use the start menu is visibly not working as it should, regardless of the element that is actually causing the issue here.
I agree on that point, although KDE has it's own issues - currently it complains that my graphics drivers aren't installed correctly for widgets, while being able to game and use CUDA without any trouble at the same time lol
Edit: anyone having this issue should go into "System Settings" - "Plasma Renderer" and just try to set it back to Vulkan or OpenGL. My issues started with switching from the stable 595 NVidia driver to the 610 beta.
To the user and in function, there's very little difference between "It's React" and "It loads a React submodule every time you use it." The result is the same. Your first response is fair and informational. This one is pedantic.
Thats great, we are not normal users here and I can call that out. No idea what's up with this encouraged ignorance just because its a Microslop product.
Pal... you're acting pretty ignorant to my comment right now. OP agreed with you, said it was interesting, and said it was worth clowning them. You got petty. You put words in their mouth.
Yes, a hodgepodge of shit is of course worse. But fucken say that then. Dont say, "its literally a react native application! Thats why its so bad!" when that is not true and sounds ignorant.
Personally, I am 100% grateful for this correction, because I didnât know and since Iâve heard the less accurate ragebait version dozens of times at this point I would have been confused, next time I have to spin up a Win11 image, why I couldnât replicate the spike Iâve heard so much about. The fact that itâs tied to a particular UI component, one of many that machine provisioning scripts and playbooks commonly disable, means it would have remained a bothersome unresolved mystery to me forever if not for your comment. So thanks.
Oh it still spikes without the recommendations lmao at least my work laptop was because I, too, have all the bullshit registry entries to make Start Menu usable and resource monitor was showing 10% spikes on average each time I opened the start menu. Wild.
Is it? Once you have committed to showing âcontent from around the webâ you are locked into spawning a web view. Then you might just as well use js for the web view bits.
The real issue is embedding a browser on the start menu to shove stupid drivel at your eyeballs. Using js to do it seems like a decent engineering practice.
No you aren't. There are a million ways you could handle this that don't require a web view. Saying that means anything that retrieves any information from a server needs one. All it needs to do is retrieve the information that needs to be displayed from a server. I don't know what all they serve through it, but it could easily provide the text and images needed without a web view.
Displaying web content is a business requirement, not a technical one. Everything follows from there.
Besides, they need full JavaScript to allow the partners to inject tracking code to make sure they are getting to what they paid for. You. The product.
Well sure. If the requirements are stupid then they're stupid. That's not what you said before though. Showing content from the web doesn't create stupid requirements.
I said âcontent from around the webâ, in quotes. Itâs what Microsoft calls this feature, that originated in Edge collections and spread like a plague over a bunch of UI elements.
Itâs ok if you donât know things. You donât have to be a jackass about it.
I upvoted your reply until I got to your last sentence. I haven't been rude. Why are you being rude? Meanwhile telling me not to be a jackass about it...
I'm a React developer too and I went tf off on the project manager who suggested we replace the company's perfectly fine Wordpress homepage with a self-built page running on React. Actually, never ever use React for anything that matters. It's exclusively suited for making janky browser games and B2B applications.
We had a Svelte application. We chose svelte because it's simpler than React is, and it's much faster. However further down the line a consultant said to the CTO that we should move to React. I said React is more complicated and has more edge cases, and its slower, but the consultant said more people know react and it has a bigger community, so we switched to React. This was fairly early in the project. React has sooo many edge cases. It's not made with async in mind, if you forget to add a [] to a useEffect it just breaks your application completely instead of doing the more sensible thing, it says "don't use useEffect" but there's so many "except when" that you end up using it everywhere regardless.
Later on the CTO got all in on Claude Code, so we spent the easter holidays rewriting the app in Svelte. Except a few bugs it was feature complete by that week and in production a few days later.
It's much, MUCH faster now, and the code is much simpler. We lost absolutely nothing by moving back to Svelte but gained a lot.
Edit: not that using either of these is sane thing to do in the start menu. The start menu should not be a web application.
As far as I can tell, react native is a way to make easy cross-compatible gui components in javascript. One of the more stupid things ms has done lately.
While working for a CDN I learned that every press of the Windows 10 Start button involved at least one call to at least one remote hostname to fetch data about the local weather to be shown in the Start menu. I presume machines were caching the response for a while, but realizing that this host was getting poked (and who knows how many others) every time someone clicked that button continues to blow my mind.
If I could go back in time but only have the power to change something really inconsequential, I'd go to whenever this episode of Dexter's Laboratory was written and force the writers to correct it to "omelette au fromage".
This is absolutely my dumbest pet peeve. Instead of cheese omelet, "omelette du fromage" reads as "omelet from cheese".
It might as well be. My sister has a better hardware than me and it takes on her Device like half a minute to load the start menu on first try. On my CachyOS it takes idk. I can't distinguish that well regarding fractions of a second.
Maybe, but they'll patch that as soon as they notice people doing it, forcing you to slightly modify the method because they aren't very good at their jobs, plus every now and then an update will just revert your changes for no apparent reason.
