They love shit like this because it's tangible, everything else they worry about is either statistically insignificant to the point most people will never see it or completely fabricated so the best they have is bottle caps.
Every time someone complains about bottle caps I think two things: they never saw how much small plastic pieces contaminate environment where people spend time relaxing and not taking the garbage where it belongs; they have really weird priorities in life.
They were at first, but now that I've gotten used to them, I actually prefer them to the unattached ones even BEFORE factoring in that they reduce plastic waste!

Yes I agree the caps can be a little inconvenient, but that's well worth the practical end result in my book. There will always be assholes that pull of the cap. And bigger assholes still who throw their shit into nature instead of properly recycling or disposing it. But a large amount of people are trying to make our world a little bit better, or at least prevent it from going to shit as fast as it is.
These days people are so selfish and spoiled, even a tiny inconvenience is enough to make them behave like little children. It's sad really.

Turns out squirrels around my house thought they were acorns or something, and literally chewed the bulb assemblies off the wire. They weren't even up for a week before I had to take them down and trash them. Now I have rope-style and mini-icicle lights that the wildlife seem content to ignore.
People who are easily upset and insecure are their holy grail. It does tend to hand in hand, they are the sort of people who do not want to admit their insecurities so they get easily upset.

Of course that has a 50% chance of leaving the tether attached to the rim so now you can stab yourself in the face while drinking. Now you have to rip/twist that off, too. Of course that bit can't be reattached to the bottle any more ...so into the natural microplastic cycle it goes. If they could at least fix the predetermine breaking point at the rim ... but that would require a design by people with a brain.
It's especially annoying with yogurts and smoothies. I have to lick the cap clean so I don't make a mess when it's dangling on my cheek, nose, or chin, whichever orientation is preferred.
