Heres some internet history for the 25th anniversary of 9/11. One of the earliest memes posted online about the attack. Often called "9/11 what if they'd missed" or "9/11 the happy ending."
There's were other versions of it I remember that had the towers bending in multiple directions as other planes attempt to fly into them but they seem to be lost media, aka the Matrix bullet dodging trope.
It was a bit harder to find than I'd assume it'd be. Someone had saved it on youtube and I've converted it to gif for posterities sake. The original was probably in Flash which is why it's so difficult to find these days.

9/11 jokes are plane wrong
cardboardboxfort@lemmy.world · 34 pts · 22h
No planes in this one. In fact, you have to have lived through Duhbya's presidency or be very knowledgable of it to understand the humor this subtle 20-oughts meme.
NABDad@lemmy.world · 49 pts · 23h
There was an ad campaign for Flexon eyeglass frames that showed a plane flying past a skyscraper while the sky scraper bends out of the way.
My wife had it in her optometry practice on 9/11. She had her staff yank it out and stash it in the back office.

9/11 jokes aren't funny. The other two are good though.

Fun fact: In Spain 9/11 is called "11S" and in Poland simply "WTC attacks" (because there's no fun way to shorten dates in Polish) .
cardboardboxfort@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 9h
Yeah I've heard most countries flip the month and day around so it'd be 11/9 so 9/11 sounds strange to them since it'd be implying November 9th rather than September 11th.
anarchy79@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 10h
Have you more fun 9/11 facts?
I only have two.
And a half.
Gullible@sh.itjust.works · 12 pts · 23h
It's been a bit funny seeing the shift. 9/11 jokes were fairly common amongst edgy doofuses for decades, but now they're considered slightly more uncouth for some reason. Not sure what the deal is. The typical joke formula flipped. Time+tragedy=irreverance? Glad for the people affected by 9/11, but it's perplexing
cardboardboxfort@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 23h
I thought the younger generations were even more radical about 9/11 jokes?
Gullible@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 23h
It might be a reaction to that, in that case. These generation wars are such exhausting nonsense.
SirLeToet@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 15h
That's because of the 22,3 year rule. Tragedies become funny to joke about without shockhumor after about 22,3 years. Like aids became socially funny ~20 years ago and 9/11 became socially acceptable to joke about just shortly after COVID.
It's uncanning how accurate Matt and Trey's documentary was. As usual.
cardboardboxfort@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 9h
I mean to be fair people were joking about 9/11 way before that time, even South Park made fun of 9/11 a few years later when they made that 9/11 conspiracy episode.
AVincentInSpace@pawb.social · 2 pts · 5h
Yes, but South Park always makes edgy, socially unacceptable jokes. Making fun of 9/11 is more or less socially acceptable now.

We didn’t take covid deaths seriously, so why should we care about 9/11?

I have it on good authority that after the towers collapsed Trump tower became the tallest building in NYC. In fact, Trump called into a news broadcast to proclaim that hours after they'd fallen.
samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 5h
I remember this edited photo of a tourist on top of the towers that went viral. My favorite edit of it was the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
cardboardboxfort@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 5h
Yup this is an oldie. Of course no one was on the observation deck that morning since it hadn't opened yet. I do believe some of the staff of the businesses on the observation floor were already there and died. I seem to recall hearing a Sabaro's employee died (there were a few NYC style eateries on the observation floor.)
samus12345@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 5h
Yeah, this picture was taken in 1997 and the guy in it did the editing. He just did it as a joke for his friends and didn't expect it to go viral.

During the summer of 2007 I was volunteering at a children's daycare at my church. There was this one kid, probably about 8 and kind of a rascal. Me and my assistant watch him grab these cardboard building blocks and stack them up into two parallel towers. He then grabs a toy airplane and yells to the other kids "hey, let's play 9/11!" We immediately put a stop to this, but then me and my assistant have to take turns going around a corner to laugh our asses off.
