LTT side channel Short Circuit has accidentally published their first 30 minutes with Steam Frame early.

https://gofile.io/d/AihAcflX --- Mirror of the video, which has since been made private.

12:50 - "This is important to point out right now. Steam Machine streaming, not supported yet. They are working on that, but for now you're going to be using a Windows PC."

Disappointing

Nice try Linus, but I wouldn't watch your review even if it was the last one on earth.

needanke@feddit.org · 27 pts · 1d

Good news, its the first one!

Your loss, he might drop some tips on cool accessories for your private jet.

Would you be interested if I tell you it's a great showcase of nepotism?

About the level of professionalism I’d expect from LTT.

Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org · 51 pts · 2d (8 replies)

Streaming only from Windows for now?? Well that's fucking disappointing.

Grimy@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 1d

I figure they are working on it though. I can't imagine it will take long for them to solve it.

doublah@sopuli.xyz · 8 pts · 1d (1 reply)

People have already been streaming VR from Steam Machine to Quest devices, so something doesn't add up.

hperrin@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 1d

Maybe they’re talking about foviated streaming in particular?

cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de · 5 pts · 1d (4 replies)

By the time you actually hold one in your hands it'll likely be fixed.

Duke_Nukem_1990@feddit.org · 4 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Not something I'm gonna bet 1200€+ on.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Well that's why you don't buy it until it's been fixed.

Personally not sure if I'll ever buy it, but if I do it'll be only after Linux is supported.

mtlvmpr@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 18h

Same. There's only 1 Windows install in my household and I'm pretty sure XP is not supported.

GarboDog@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d

Yeah that pricing is yeouch

SatyrSack@quokk.au · 42 pts · 2d

TL;DW for anyone just looking for any new information:

  • Ergo kit is $60 (I assume USD)
    • two hand straps to make the controllers more like Knuckles controllers
    • head strap
    • nose light guard for smaller noses
  • Game streaming from Linux does not work at the moment
    • Valve is reportedly working on it, and it may or may not be ready on release
    • This video seems to have been recorded 24 August according to the date on his watch
  • Power supply sold separately
    • 45 watt
    • No price given
  • The initial experience is basically just a wireless Index (for better or worse)
tidderuuf@lemmy.world · 26 pts · 2d

"accidentally"

diaphragmwp@discuss.tchncs.de · 17 pts · 1d

Amazing, so that means people would buy the Index less, the first gen Vive will go down and I can finally afford Google Cardboard.

EDIT: 1 downvote is Gabe.

PalmTreeIsBestTree@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 1d

I guess cutting corners is happening more often with them these days after Linus bought the private jet.

PonyOfWar@pawb.social · 12 pts · 1d (5 replies)

$60 for the ergonomic kit, which is a couple of pieces of fabric, is rough. Doesn't bode well for the price of the HMD.

I suspect Linux/Machine streaming will be there at launch and might be a reason they've been so late with the launch. We've seen quite a few Linux fixes in recent SteamVR releases.

cronenthal@discuss.tchncs.de · 7 pts · 1d

I'd hope so. Excluding Steam Machine from streaming would be a hilariously bad look.

hperrin@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 1d (3 replies)

They might sell it near cost, since the only practical way to use it is through Steam. I understand why they didn’t do that with the Steam Machine, because that’s very easy to use without Steam.

iamthetot@piefed.ca · 3 pts · 19h (2 replies)

They might sell it near cost

Zero chance.

hperrin@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 17h (1 reply)

I mean, near cost still wouldn’t be a good price, but there’s not a lot of advantage to sell it at a high price for them. Much less reason for anyone to buy into their VR ecosystem rather than Meta’s.

iamthetot@piefed.ca · 1 pts · 15h

Your lips to Gabe's billionaire ears.

artyom@piefed.social · 11 pts · 1d

Almost a year after initial unveiling and they still haven't figured out streaming from their own hardware!?

hereiamagain@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 2d (4 replies)

Anyone got another mirror? First one down

died again

FoxAlive@lemmy.zip · 8 pts · 2d

So its set to release soon then.

Creat@discuss.tchncs.de · 6 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Do we know what the real embargo date was supposed to be? Like was the upload off by hours, days, weeks?

SatyrSack@quokk.au · 6 pts · 1d

No, we regular old users have no idea. But the best bet at this point is this coming Monday.
