For a lot of people it's not because of any gods, that's just a convenient justification. Colonization is usually about material goals and benefits for the colonizers. Boiling it down to gods erases this aspect, so I'd caution against doing that.
I think we should be cautious about viewing religion as an excuse when it comes to doing something immoral. You never hear that religion is just an excuse when people are doing religious based charity, it’s always assumed to be an honest expression of their religious faith.
I'd argue it usually is an "excuse" in charitable cases; that is to say, people already inclined to do charity might say it's because of their religious beliefs. I just don't really care about that because a good thing is good.

Yes, it is a shame. People here are no different than MAGA, (your favorite shit group), etc. in how they polarize things, how they are manipulated and how easily they dig into a us-vs-them mentality. From my perspective the same kind of toxic way of thinking.

I was leaning more in favor of "avoiding random side" rather than "not picking a side when you don't know".
There are many many cases in which we don't know, yet, we can still take a reasonably correct side:
We don't know if the bus driver is a psychopat, and yet, we still take the bus.
We don't know "how" a balanced diet is good for the body, yet, we still try to follow and recommend it.
By proxy, by incomplete knowledge, by relying on trustworthy groups of people who do know, we can reasonably side with the group that claims that a "balanced diet" is good. Same with vaccines.
The homework is to pick those "experts" and approach to at least some partial knowledge.

For a lot of people it's not because of any gods, that's just a convenient justification. Colonization is usually about material goals and benefits for the colonizers. Boiling it down to gods erases this aspect, so I'd caution against doing that.
