Spam in Signal?

Has anyone else received stuff like this?

Probably goes without saying but you really shouldn't message back bots unless you want to continue receiving other spam messages.

Delusion6903@discuss.online · 13 pts · 1y

Good point, I actually didn't think of that. But it wasn't a bot. Anyway, I guess that's the point of being able to throw away usernames.

That seems legit man. You missed out.

Delusion6903@discuss.online · 27 pts · 1y

I asked him to send me the check and just send it to my address since he had my Signal number. I'm expecting it before Christmas.

otter@lemmy.ca · 42 pts · 1y

Note, if you have sensitive information in your signal profile, you shouldn't accept messages you aren't familiar with

See the "What happens when I ..." > "Accept" section

https://support.signal.org/hc/en-us/articles/360007459591-Signal-Profiles-and-Message-Requests

I'm not aware of any other privacy issues past that, but I'd worry about getting more spam by engaging with them

I get spam like this on every single messaging platform eventually. Just block and report it and get on with your life.

SomeAmateur@sh.itjust.works · 25 pts · 1y (7 replies)

Yep, not a lot but it happens

Kusimulkku@lemm.ee · 5 pts · 1y

I've had spam on mostly every messaging platform. Telegram has been easily the worst though

perishthethought@lemm.ee · -11 pts · 1y (5 replies)

In the middle of a conversation with someone you know? Yikes

Steve@communick.news · 17 pts · 1y

It's a separate thread for each user or group you have. These bots come in as a new contact and thread. So no. Never in the middle of a preexisting conversation. I got one once, 2-3 years ago now. It was immediately apparent like this one. I just reported and blocked them.

SomeAmateur@sh.itjust.works · 10 pts · 1y

no not mid conversation

schnokobaer@feddit.org · 8 pts · 1y

"You accepted the message request"

It's a new conversation

and a truck!!

sic_semper_tyrannis@lemmy.today · 9 pts · 1y

If you're on Android use the app Molly. You can disable messages from people not within your contacts

Steamymoomilk@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 1y (3 replies)

S tier play, say i want all my money to go to the local childrens hospital aswell as the truck. If it happend to be real (which its not) you helped out sick kids. And you make the spanmer on the other end feel like the peice of shit they are!!

chances are they'd scam children if they had any money. Scum like that target easy victims

JackbyDev@programming.dev · -1 pts · 1y

It feels more likely that you're going to waste the hospital's resources if they somehow get accused of money laundering.

foremanguy92_@lemmy.ml · 7 pts · 1y (2 replies)

Yes since you registered your phone and have an id, it's a way to spam you. Simplex doesn't have it btw

Delusion6903@discuss.online · 5 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I really don't mind the single spam I've gotten so far and I accepted the request just because I enjoy playing with them.

SimpleX seems pretty nice but I had enough trouble converting my family to Signal. Did you there isn't feature parity between the iOS and Android versions?

foremanguy92_@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 1y

SimpleX is for now a bit too new, but I think this the way to go. What do you mean by feature parity?

MIDItheKID@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 1y

That's the 2nd place prize?! Imagine what the 1st place prize is!

GiveOver@feddit.uk · 6 pts · 1y

I get it a lot, I'm guessing from randomly trying usernames

Senpai@lemm.ee · 4 pts · 1y

Nah I didn't and not even on my email too 🤷‍♂️

BluesF@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y (3 replies)

I got one which appeared at first to be a wrong number, just someone asking if I was Catherine or something. I politely informed them of their mistake. They kept messaging, already a bit weird, but then started saying I was "a nice man, nothing like other men" and I slapped that block button. Idk where it was going (not even a man lol, sorry love) but I'm confident it would have ended with asking me for money... Eventually.

Jeeeesus fucking Christ. John Oliver is pretty funny but it almost doesn't feel acceptable to be laughing during some of that. Anyway, glad I didn't fall for it 😬

Hiro8811@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

So that's what that shit was. Got sent three of those conversations and at first I thought they were weird but I should've knew no woman will willingly keep a conversion going even less with random strangers.

fl42v@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 1y

Why truck, tho? Is it supposed to be one megabuck in $1 bills or something?

communism@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 1y

Once got a wrong number text from a human on Signal but that's it

And also if you don't show email or phone number anywhere, as I don't either.

Jimmycrackcrack@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 1y

I wonder what the reasoning was behind it being the 2nd place prize. Is that inherently more believable?
