I always assumed America would swiftly deal with a racist fascist criminal megalomaniac.

Boy was I wrong.

This nation is WEAK.

avidamoeba@lemmy.ca · 55 pts · 336d (13 replies)

Well instead of dealing with their fascist problem after WWII, they decided to repress (and sometimes kill) the most reliable antifascists - the leftists.

That said some countries that objectively did purge their fasists seem to still have that problem today. Perhaps the theory that capitalism creates fascism as it declines predicts this.

Soup@lemmy.world · 31 pts · 336d (5 replies)

Capitalism creates an environment of fear and danger and promotes of level of individual responsibility that alienates people from everyone else. Even people who are well off today are afraid of losing advantages and being hung out to dry by the very same uncaring system they keep supporting.

Mr_WorldlyWiseman@lemmy.blahaj.zone · -9 pts · 335d (4 replies)

It's not that cut and dry. There is a lot of overlap between capitalism and communism.

Soup@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 335d (3 replies)
  1. I never said the solution was full-blown communism. God, have the barest capability of nuance.

  2. You clearly aren’t smoking responsibly if you genuinely believe that to be true.

Mr_WorldlyWiseman@lemmy.blahaj.zone · -3 pts · 334d (2 replies)

You don't understand Marx or Lenin if you don't understand their belief in the relationship between capitalism and communism.

My point was that there's more nuance than just "capitalism always causes social fragmentation"

Soup@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 334d

Ok, help me understand it then.

joshchandra@midwest.social · 0 pts · 334d

Go on...

prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 10 pts · 335d (3 replies)

We also literally imported their scientists

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 335d

After directly inspiring their eugenics efforts.

Count042@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 334d (1 reply)

Not just their scientists.

Look up operation bloodstone.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Bloodstone

LowtierComputer@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 334d

While some potential recruits had served in Nazi forces and possibly committed war crimes, Wisner believed that their shared opposition to communism outweighed these past actions.

Valmond@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 335d

Well, I guess the Soviet Union didn't really help there.

Awkwardparticle@programming.dev · 2 pts · 334d (1 reply)

Are you referring to purging facists after Nazi Germany fell?

avidamoeba@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 334d

Haha no, they didn't purge shit. I'm referring for example to the Russian Communist Party of the USSR killing people. And I'm not attaching a moral value on the methods, just looking at it as objective removal of fascist people and then observing modern day Russia. I think there are other similar examples. I imagine Hungary also purged any fascist they could smell ubder the commie rule, haven't checked, and yet here we are today.

MBech@feddit.dk · 31 pts · 336d (1 reply)

Why would they deal with racists? USA as a whole never stopped being racist.

charade_you_are@sh.itjust.works · -3 pts · 336d

Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works · 20 pts · 336d

Turns out conservatives were just waiting for one evil and horrible enough all along.

And the Democrats... Jesus Christ are they useless. They roll over at the very sound of a stiff breeze.

WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 336d

I'd call America a nation of bitches, but bitches have a backbone.

Resonosity@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 334d (2 replies)

The USA is distracted with treats. It's economy is the imperial core of the planet. That fact affords Trump some time before the masses realize what's going on.

Remember that the Nazis made the economy temporarily better for the in-group. They actually allowed socialist benefits for the German workforce before clamping down on that during WWII.

Trump isn't making the economy better for anyone though. He's screwing everyone over, and channeling that hate towards anything else but him and his base.

Just as we've seen with Charlie Kirk's murder and Candace Owen's conspiracy theory to blame it all on Israel, the Right can fracture very easily. I don't think this Admin will make it to the height of the Nazis. Their own incompetence and marriage to the rich will sew the seeds of their demise. Of course, anti-fascists throwing wrenches in things doesn't hurt either.

jacksilver@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 334d (1 reply)

This is what I keep expecting, but there has been minimal pushback on all the horrible economic policies and somehow the economy is mostly shrugging it off.

Resonosity@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 334d

To be fair, we're not really sure what the economy is doing because Trump rejects any reports from his Admin that show the economy in a bad light.

We're back to COVID level unemployment, iirc.

Edit: we also haven't seen the full extent of the impact that deportation of undocumented immigrants will have on the economy.

AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works · 115 pts · 336d (6 replies)

There was period of time during Trump's last administration where the world just got so crazy I had a collection of screenshots of "not the onion" headlines that just seemed too insane to be real.

I remember one was like "Judge determines woman can't prove she didn't want to be set on fire."

This would fit in nicely.

Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 336d (4 replies)

Huh.......I'm trying to think of what legal defense you could give to PROVE you didn't want to be set on fire.

I can't think of one. What do you say that proves it? Which means I get how that headline happened, but also.....how did THAT headline happen???

IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 336d (1 reply)

The only thing I can think of is that there was some sort of event where other people were being willingly set on fire. Like if were some sort of performance that went wrong, I could see there being a reasonable defense that the performer didn't know she didn't want to participate.

onslaught545@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 336d

It could also be a kink thing.

FaceDeer@fedia.io · 4 pts · 336d

Most of the time when weird questions like that involving consent come up, I assume it probably involved some kind of sex thing.

kionay@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 335d

my lay person understanding of the law is that in situations like these you don't need to prove what should be so overwhelmingly self-evident

there's probably some Latin phrase for it a lawyer would just know but when a thing is so far away from a gray area of reasonableness you're fine

you shouldn't need hard evidence, people as a rule don't like to set themselves on fire

Hector@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 335d

Getting set on fire is really something that where the burden of proof is on the burner.

But_my_mom_says_im_cool@lemmy.world · 89 pts · 336d (7 replies)

ABC just caved and fired kimmel, the fascists are winning

Tja@programming.dev · 37 pts · 335d

Of course they are winning, the American electorate made sure of that. Presidency, both chambers, Supreme Court, popular vote, etc.

Project 2025 was known worldwide, now they are just implementing it.

And the public seem to be fine with it, trump has one of the highest approval ratings in the world (despite being negative).

Obamacare will be next, then Medicare, then contraceptives, then gay marriage...

BrokenGlepnir@lemmy.world · 22 pts · 335d (4 replies)

The thing is you're confused here, but it's fine because he's confused. It's the wrong ABC. He thinks it's the American broadcasting corporation. And you could be forgiven for thinking that because that's all the identification we get here. This is actually the "Australian" broadcasting corporation. I'm not as familiar, but it looks like their PBS.

tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip · 12 pts · 335d

There were recent interactions with both nations' ABCs. The OP article where he says "maybe we should go after you" is about US ABC, after a reporter asked about going after hate speech.

In the one about Aus ABC the reporter asked about shady business deals, and the response was "You're hurting Australia" and threatened to tell the Austalian "leader" that the reporter was setting a "bad tone".

US: https://youtu.be/Zxa8diaYNmQ

Aus: https://youtu.be/TzO5nz7hJmo

wjrii@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 335d

Somebvody posted a link from Australian ABC about this story, but it was American ABC.

InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 335d

Being an Aussie doesn't mean they won't try and go after him.

Hector@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 335d

It seems to be a recurring theme where Australian Broadcasting Corporation gets attacked. Black lives matter they beat a group of them,, then what else there was another incident just recently.

Highlandcow@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 334d

Disgusting that happened, it's not pro free speech, Charlie's death should of reminded us more then ever the value of free speech

If you don't want to be called a Nazi, stop doing Nazi shit you sack of human shit.

A_norny_mousse@feddit.org · 68 pts · 336d (9 replies)

Trump always had this knack of revealing his intentions when he thought he could just hit back at people.

That's nothing new.

But what he reveals is indeed getting worse every day, or at least: every day of 2025 it is much worse than before that.

This, ladies and germs, is narcissistic dictatorial megalomania. Let's hope it he won't last long.

dan1101@lemmy.world · 30 pts · 336d (1 reply)

I hoped it wouldn't last long back in January.

Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de · 31 pts · 336d

And that was like 10-15 years ago

FaceDeer@fedia.io · 12 pts · 336d

Let's hope it won't last long.

Just hoping he goes away doesn't strike me as a good strategy. So probably that's what the Democrats will go with.

Oh remember restaurants? So lovely how it used to be you know. The restaurants. Of course they were shut down by the terrible crime and the covid.

Of course I’m a very good driver . . . yeah. Uh oh. Fart.

HootinNHollerin@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 330d (1 reply)

Well lol im just in an industry with no unions so thought it was good to post but apparently its some op now so i wont spread the link. But we definitely need to shut down this fascist takeover

Dragonstaff@leminal.space · 2 pts · 330d

Sorry, nothing personal. I've seen images posted a lot. This is the first time I saw a website, but that's even worse.

Strikes take a lot of planning and coordination. You need to be able to support your strikers so that they'll be able to outlast Capital until your demands are met. One of the main purposes of unions is to save a "war chest" to do this.

If I and a bunch of my Internet buddies tried to strike, the first problem is that we'd each be the only striker at our workplaces...our bosses would just fire us and go on with their day.
