This seems dangerous for both the codebase and the cars around them.

A software engineer needs two jobs. Which means most people need at least 4. Or 3 if they live under a bridge.

Gladaed@feddit.org · 7 pts · 329d (4 replies)

A software engineer does not need two jobs. That's ridiculous.

Sauerkraut@discuss.tchncs.de · 14 pts · 329d

It sounds ridiculous, yes, but there are US software engineers who basically work for minimum wage full time doing freelance work because that is all they can find

piccolo@sh.itjust.works · 13 pts · 329d (1 reply)
boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 328d

I mean if you read the article, one of them saved for a year or 2 and bought a house (I’m assuming large down payment for a mortgage), one had a “house payment and alimony” (so basically paying half the salary to the ex), one was saving up 90% of income doing this.

These are people who were either striving for FIRE or had other shit happen to them.

Obviously the area is ridiculously expensive, but software engineers make more than enough to live on a single job. If they still have jobs of course.

buttnugget@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 329d

Ok so a software engineer needs 3 or 4.

That's startup life. Dude might be rolling in it in a couple years and it's a decision. Feel bad for the non tech workers around the bay

dan@upvote.au · 29 pts · 329d (3 replies)

might be rolling in it in a couple years

Doubtful given 70-90% of startups fail.

sip@programming.dev · 10 pts · 329d (1 reply)

he did say "might be" 😅

GissaMittJobb@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 329d

Everyone who plays the lottery might be a millionaire too

Draces@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 329d

might

Yeah it's risky. People do it multiple times though and one success pays out. It's a risky choice that I wouldn't make but I understand why people do

umbrella@lemmy.ml · 29 pts · 329d

.

Gladaed@feddit.org · 14 pts · 329d (1 reply)

Clown town libertarian take.

Draces@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 329d

Lmao yes, telling you to feel bad for non tech workers in the bay area makes me libertarian

criss_cross@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 329d

You could work for a startup that still pays a livable wage so you don’t have to do something this reckless. That is an option.

Whelks_chance@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 329d (2 replies)

Not sure why this is downvoted. It's a lifestyle choice that is a genuine choice. You don't have to live in SF if it's not for you.

Draces@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 329d (1 reply)

Yeah I don't get it. You can also work for established companies where you get steady income instead of volatile stocks but you're not going to be able to retire super early with a work life balance that way

Whelks_chance@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 329d

Exactly. I got a drive by downvote which is a shame. Some people are in a situation where they're happy to take a risk, and know that if it fails they won't be destitute, and sometimes you might be paid more to account for the risk. Or less, but you get stock options to account for the risk. They're all valid options as long as you're not forced into it.

ilinamorato@lemmy.world · 32 pts · 329d (5 replies)

Ok, obviously merging while you merge is super dangerous. Almost as dangerous as using light mode on your phone. The rider should've known he was a sociopath just from that.

BJ_and_the_bear@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 329d (4 replies)

Hey, I prefer light mode. There are dozens of us!

Nothing in life really prepares you for meeting such an unfathomable being...

buttnugget@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 329d (2 replies)

It’s mind blowing but there are people who really do prefer it! Don’t forget to leave an optional light mode for them!

lessthanluigi@lemmy.sdf.org · 3 pts · 328d (1 reply)

20 years ago, everything was light mode.

Anyway, I have it set to time of day, so it switches between the two

portuga@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 328d

Actually try thousands of years. God invented light mode when he said “let there be light”. He was cut off mid-sentence but he was gonna say “mode”

It's worth mentioning that this guy and the "Uber driver" works in the same company

buddascrayon@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 329d (1 reply)

I thought this was happening in Rome?

Did OP lie in the title?

ilinamorato@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 329d

"When in Rome" is the first half of an old adage: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." It means that when you're in an unfamiliar location, take your cues on what to do from the people who live there. It doesn't mean that they're literally in Rome.

It's being used somewhat incorrectly in this title; to say that the Uber driver is just doing what's normal for Bay Area people, I guess.

This is a concept known as CAC (configuration as code) - the driver made changes to the route, making the change visible, reversible, safe, auditable and testable. It's also great for the PRs merged per day metric!

so he updated his script, or fixed a bug while driving, right?

Whelks_chance@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 329d

Someone else wrote some code, and he reviewed it and approved it, and merged it into the codebase.

kuberoot@discuss.tchncs.de · 4 pts · 329d

Oh I would hope not, it's good practice to not let the person writing the code merge it in, to get a fresh pair of eyes on the code before it goes in.

Though in a way you could say he "fixed a bug" by merging a bugfix written by somebody else, but that feels like a failure of attribution.
