Sounds like you got a deal. Geometrically speaking, you got a way higher ratio of carrot to carrot skin.

Gnugit@aussie.zone · 66 pts · 304d (28 replies)

Chef here. Don't bother peeling carrots unless you are making salad. You are just wasting your carrot.

And use the skins in stocks, soups and sauces.

balsoft@lemmy.ml · 28 pts · 304d (17 replies)

I think it depends on the carrot. Some of them are impossible to wash well.

mavu@discuss.tchncs.de · 26 pts · 303d (5 replies)

You don't need to make it sterile, unless you plan to use the carrot as wound dressing.
Which is probably not advisable anyway.

Maybe for a salad, i clean a bit more thoroughly. Humans are not that fragile. (unless you specifically are, in which case, do be careful)

howrar@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 303d (4 replies)

It's not about sterility. Dirt/sand in your mouth is a very unpleasant experience.

Aeao@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 303d

StaticFalconar@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 303d (1 reply)

The rough side of the sponge should be able to get that no problem. Still no need to peel.

howrar@lemmy.ca · 0 pts · 303d

I don't know how a sponge is supposed to do anything when sometimes even the peeler can't do the job. I have to get into the nooks with a knife.

LogicalDrivel@sopuli.xyz · 9 pts · 304d (1 reply)

Get a stiff bristled scrub brush and only use it for vegies. You can scrub all the dirt off super easy and if you really scrub you basically peel them anyways with the brush.

GandalftheBlack@feddit.org · 3 pts · 303d

Yep. I basically never peel carrots when cooking for myself unless they're past their best

ranzispa@mander.xyz · 4 pts · 303d (1 reply)

Unless it's for salad, I just run them under some water. Same for potatoes.

Time is too short for peeling vegetables.

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 303d

Potato skins are where the nutrients are at. Also lots of flavor.

Idk if I'd say the same about carrots

Routhinator@startrek.website · 3 pts · 304d (5 replies)

In root vegetables, 80% of the vitamins are in the skin, and the flesh is nearly pure carbs. You're throwing away most of the good stuff.

Fmstrat@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 303d
RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 304d

80% of the vitamins are not in the skin. There are exceptions where the skin of some fruits and vegetables are higher in a particular vitamin(s), like for instance potato skins are highest in iron or something like that, but it is untrue that the majority of nutrition is in the skins of these foods and discarding or peeling them removes “80%” of the nutritional value of the food.

halvar@lemy.lol · 2 pts · 304d (10 replies)

Don't you mean lower?

balsoft@lemmy.ml · 12 pts · 304d (6 replies)

By "ratio of carrot to carrot skin" I mean "volume of carrot / volume of carrot skin". Volume of carrot is ~ length³, while volume of carrot skin is approximately ~ length², assuming a similar shape of carrot, because the skin is a constant thickness (determined by your vegetable peeler). This basically means the bigger the carrot the less money you waste on carrot skin.

TheOakTree@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 304d (4 replies)

The volume is length^3? Is the carrot a 10"x10"x10" cube?

balsoft@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 304d (2 replies)

~

TheOakTree@lemmy.zip · 0 pts · 303d (1 reply)

Understandable, have a nice day.

I will point out that saying "approximately ~length^2" seems redundant, but that's neither here nor there.

balsoft@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 303d

The approximation is because it's technically not exactly proportional due to curvature.

Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works · 40 pts · 304d (12 replies)

They did you a favor. The advantage is, you only have to peel One Carrot. And it's not that hard to cut it up, you could even make carrot sticks and dice half of them for stew, or cut half and shred half for carrot salad. The sticks keep nicely in the fridge with a little cold water.

NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io · 14 pts · 304d (11 replies)

You peel carrots? Why‽

HappyFrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 304d (7 replies)

Because they've been in the ground, and the ground is mostly poop

NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io · 11 pts · 304d (4 replies)

I mean, that's reason to wash it, but I don't think there's a medical argument for peeling. Could be wrong though, but I've never heard of this being a problem ever.

arrow74@lemmy.zip · 6 pts · 303d

Oh boy do I have bad news for you.

Basically everything in your environment is covered in human poop.

If you bring a carrot into your home it has way less poop on it than your toothbrush.

HappyFrog@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 5 pts · 304d

Don't get me wrong, I don't think I'll be sick if I eat the outer layer, I'm just grossed out by the thought.

Routhinator@startrek.website · 2 pts · 304d (1 reply)

Medical argument against it actually, as you remove most of the healthy stuff.

Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 303d

Some, but not most. There's significant nutrition in the phloem (layer under the skin) which is not removed by peeling. And even the center has nutritional value. It is best to peel them just before using rather than let them sit around once peeled, since the peel protects them.

shneancy@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 304d

honestly i don't mind a bit of dirt with a touch of poop. if i myself pluck a carrot out of the ground - i'll just wash it a bit and proceed to chomp

what i do mind is the number of hands and various containers the carrot goes through before it gets bought by me at a store. theoretically, nobody has to touch a carrot for it to appear in the store (harvested mechanically, transported in large quantities, thrown out of a box onto the store display), sure, but i'm not counting on that, nor am i counting on the fact they wash their hands properly

Routhinator@startrek.website · 1 pts · 304d

In root vegetables, 80% of the vitamins are in the skin, and the flesh is nearly pure carbs. You're throwing away most of the good stuff.

RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 304d

Same reason some people peel potatoes. I don't bother myself, I just wash them (unless I'm eating the carrot fresh without cooking)

lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com · 3 pts · 304d

Because the peel tastes nasty?

Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 303d

I peel carrots because to me the peel tastes like dirt. As for that whole poop discussion, I'm pretty sure that guano in the soil is not the worst contaminant on the skin of the carrot. E. coli on vegetables for instance usually comes from the hands of someone who handled it. And many carrots have pesticides on them.

I grant you that the skin probably also contains lots of vitamins, although there's still plenty in the interior. And giving the carrot a really good scrub would get the skin clean.

But I've never been able to scrub away the dirt flavor to my satisfaction. So I peel them with a carrot peeler. The existence of which indicates it's a common enough behavior not to merit an interrobang.

Though I do love an interrobang, so thanks.

Something something flared base

shneancy@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 304d (1 reply)

to fill out the something somethings for the unaware audience -

if you get something into your bum fully, it's very hard to get out on your own without hurting yourself, and your ass can suck that thing in in a second - so unless you're an avid fan of going to a doctor to get something out of your butt, the object you're penetrating yourself with has to have a flared base - that is a base at the bottom of the object much wider than what your ass can suck in, which will stop the thing from sliding in

burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de · 3 pts · 303d

that is a base at the bottom of the object much wider than what your ass can suck in

And don't believe your hiney can't suck. Every ER will tell you some rather large objects that have made it in. Make that base 33% wider than the widest portion of the object, or 7.62cm diameter, whichever is greater.

Well yeah, they're made to order. Probably forgot to enter a value in the quantity field and the system just defaulted to one, so instead of "2.5lbs, 10 carrots" ya got "2.5lbs, 1 carrot". You know how much resources if takes to grow a 2.5lb carrot? It's not a small amount. Wasteful, this is.

Kuroda carrot maybe.

If it is those are very juicy and fucking delicious. Go to your nearest Asian market. Enjoy better carrots

Eq0@literature.cafe · 4 pts · 304d (1 reply)

When I find big carrots they always end up woody and tough, definitely not as nice as smaller carrots. And you are telling me it’s a difference in type of carrots?

Jarix@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 303d

Seems to be.

Used to eat carrots out of my grandma's farm when I was a wee lad. Have never found ones that taste the same.

But there is now a Korean grocery store nearest to me and is been great to get different varietals and seeing what ingredients are like from other places just because they grow a different one.

I've found the greenish part of the stem can go a bit further in some of the carrots which isn't the most pleasant but it's only been like one carrot that was like that, the rest were just a big ole tasty carrot. Surprisingly juicy compared to what I'm used to from the grocery stores I've gone to most of my life.

I have a female friend who is of the opinion that dick size doesn’t matter because only the first few inches of the vaginal canal has erotic nerve endings. I’ve told her that dick size is like breast size: some people care more about it than others and it is a factor. She continues to deny it matters at all.

I’m a guy of average size. I don’t have any insecurities about my junk. But I have enough experience and watched enough (realistic) porn that I know it matters, it’s just not a game breaker like some insecure men fear it is. That being said, size queens are a thing too.

robocall@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 303d

Yeah, it was a dumb joke because the carrot is jumbo. Dick size doesn't matter. Even small dicks are fine. What actually matters is how frequently a guy goes down on a woman.
