Canadians still don't pay the tarrifs.
Reannlegge@lemmy.ca · 34 pts · 297d
Shocked Pikachu! I hope the people of the US realize that sooner or later.

Probably some time after the people currently absorbing the cost run out and their economy implodes.
I admit, even with the scary global crisis potential, it's going to be kind of satisfying.
Typhoon@lemmy.ca · 64 pts · 297d
Glad they pulled those Reagan tariff commercials to appease him. Yet again they fall for his whining bitch-fest and give him what he wants and he does whatever he wants anyway. Stop enabling him.
Bring back the commercials. Bring back the digital services tax.
Reannlegge@lemmy.ca · 12 pts · 297d
Yes bring back the dst more people will find Canadian alternatives
FireRetardant@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 296d
Doug Ford had some big dick energy planning to run the commercials for months but that spineless oaf backed down at the first sign of resistance.
YurkshireLad@lemmy.ca · 43 pts · 297d
He’s going to punish us either way, so play the ad all day long.
Albbi@lemmy.ca · 32 pts · 297d
And bring back the big tech tax.
Routhinator@startrek.website · 2 pts · 296d
He's going to punish Americans. His tariffs don't do shit to Canada.
NotSteve_@piefed.ca · 5 pts · 296d
That's not entirely true tbf. I know some people who work as electrical engineers in factories and the tariffs do hurt their businesses quite a lot
NarrativeBear@lemmy.world · 37 pts · 297d
Strange, I don't seem to be paying anything at the moment. I wonder who's really paying the bill? The American public you say?
Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world · 33 pts · 297d
Nobody drinks orange juice or American liquor here anymore. Not a big deal. His Ball room looks like shit
Shadow@lemmy.ca · 29 pts · 297d
Canadian made goods are sent to the US under cusma anyways, so they're duty free. This mostly hurts vendors that buy from China and just reship without doing much.
The bigger impact was from them getting rid of their $800 exemption, since now every package gets hit by customs & handling fees.
Reannlegge@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 297d
Not all trade is done under CUSMA

Gotta fund the Jeffrey Epstein Memorial Ballroom in some way during the shutdown.
Reannlegge@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 296d
Why? Do you think the government employees are making money while they are locked out?
I don’t believe that they are, but the people are still paying taxes.

Our grocery store used to sell avocados from the US and they were $4 each. Today I bought a bag of 5 from Mexico and the bag was only $3.99.
Keep going Trump. I like these cheap Mexican avocados. Without your shenanigans, we'd probably still be stuck with American produce.
golden_calf@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 297d
Really? In America we buy Mexican avocados. I didn't even know there were American avocados.

adespoton@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 297d
US tariffs are on Canadian goods sold in the US. So, Canola, softwood lumber, auto parts, potash, etc.
IndridCold@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 296d
I think you missed my point. Every time that orange idiot opens his face, he pisses his allies off and make them non-allies. He didn't earn the relationship the US has with Canada by being diplomatic, but he has no problem demolishing it. His last term he dicked around and threw out a previously agreed upon trade agreement, so he signed a new one that was similar, and this term forgot that was his agreement and said it sucked.
Each time he dicks around, it motivates Canada to look elsewhere for reliable, trustworthy and sane long term partners. Since the US had decided it is no longer a friend of Canada and speaks of absorbing it, Canada has decided to stop shopping with the US as much as possible. This is how I now have avocados from Mexico. If the stores put US produce on the shelf, it rots. No one wants it simply because Trump is a huge piece of shit.
There is a growing desire in Canada for Chinese EV cars. They are just as shit as the US ones (except they charge faster and go further), but they're way cheaper. Canada put a tariff on these cars to help protect the US auto industry. China had made Canada some nice trade offers, which aren't so great for the US, but we haven't taken them yet. Keep dicking around Trump. I want my Chinese EV.
I guess my point is, the more Trump tries to bully Canada, the better off Canada becomes.
Bigger picture: The US is failing, Canada sees this, and Trump is escalating it. This has really benefited Canada because we're positioning ourselves to be better off when the US crumbles. Without Trump, I don't think we'd be in as good position when it finally happens.
avidamoeba@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 296d
I think they also tariff Mexican goods, so Mexico redirects their exports here. So we get Mexican goods at lower prices. Due to the higher supply, lower demand.
Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca · 17 pts · 297d
They were never serious about trade talks. It's all a childish game. Let's end trade with them completely.

They jailed a guy on terrorism charges for posting a
Charlie KirkTrump quote.Does the Ontario government now get charged with terrorism for quoting Reagan?
That's how things work now right?
AlecSadler@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 15 pts · 297d
US businesses impacted negatively by this will blame Canada, because their God Trump tells them so.
US is said and done, most people here just don't see it yet or aren't willing to accept it.
ikidd@lemmy.world · 15 pts · 296d
Funny, I don't recall paying a tariff? Did any of you? Those Americans certainly seem to be paying a lot in tariffs though.
SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world · 14 pts · 297d
Canada has higher tariffs then Russia at this point, right?
SomethingWentWrong@lemmy.ca · 13 pts · 297d
BC Premier David Eby is preparing a digital ad campaign stating exactly that. Canadian lumber has higher tarrifs than Russian lumber imported into the USA:

And I hope he doesn’t fold like Ford.
IndridCold@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 296d
Since Trump shit his pants, he didn't need to keep running the ad. If Trump had kept his mouth shut, it would have been a blip. Since he filled his diapers, everyone has seen it, talked about it, heard of it, know of it. The ad did exactly what it was designed to do.
Why keep running it when it has become viral and people watch it for free?
Reannlegge@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 296d
Fair point, when the weekend stories came in I thought about changing my remark.
IndridCold@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 295d
Of course, it does make Ford look really weak saying he was pulling the ad.
skozzii@lemmy.ca · 14 pts · 296d
Correction : He is raising the tariffs on Americans buying Canadian goods.

Calm the fuck down.
This only effects Canadian products being sold to the U.S.. Companies will raise the price of products, costing not us, but U.S. Americans. Their food banks are already running out in the mornings, he is litterly starving his country. While funneling money towards Argentina, and hurting his own American Farmers.
They already have protests for "No Kings", at this rate their will be a collapse of the country, or a coup.
ohshit604@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 295d
Have yet to see Carney grow that spine. Maybe one day he’ll call on all U.S debts to be repaid to Canada, until that day elbows are at the lowest they’ve ever been.

I'm not sure what the tarrifs currently are, but I'm not sure this is as dramatic as it sounds.
As an example, if the tarrifs are currently 30%, raising them 10% over and above what they currently are would make them 33%, right? ....right?
Then again, he's already proven that he can't do maths
4am@lemmy.zip · 13 pts · 296d
Yeah no he means that if they’re 30% he’s making them 40%.
Again, unilaterally and without the vote of Congress, which hems supposed to need.
Can someone please remove him? What the fuck are we even doing here?

We do not pay the tariffs, the people buying stuff pay the tariffs.
CanadaPlus@lemmy.sdf.org · 2 pts · 295d
True! The more accurate way of putting it would be "our clients have to pay".
