Does anyone know of any examples of politicians swinging hard in the opposite direction? I’m not talking about things like the Lincoln project or changes made up to age 25 or so, but actual significant leftward movement from adult politicians.
You can never trust her again. She doesn't believe in ideology, she just wants power and is willing to go to any side and any length to get what she feels entitled to.
Don’t worry, that’s not why I’m asking. No, she’s a rat forever.
I just wonder if it’s always in this direction. My suspicion is that it tends to flow from more discerning parties to less discerning parties, and in the US right now, the republicans are the least discerning of the national parties. I could see people moving from actual leftist parties to the greens (in the places where the greens are either liberal or controlled opposition) in other countries, I’m not sure if they’re leftist in some countries), but that’s still a rightward move.
I think Graham Platner, if you take his word for what is in his past and present political mindsets, would be an example of a right-to-left swing, but not done as a politician. Shaun on YouTube is another one that comes to mind potentially, depending on how old he is for whether that qualifies as an under age 25. In the US at least, we don't really have a strong left wing to draw in people looking for a change, so most of those conversions are happening less in the public sphere and more in corners of the internet, where it hasn't been enshittified to ensure even those spaces are dominated by tight wing narratives
That’s part of why I’m asking- the vast majority of leftists I know grew up in right wing or centrist circles and moved left on their own, but I don’t know if there are politicians who really reflect that.
Actually, Graham Platner is very relevant and I’m interested in whether people trust him enough to elect him and whether he stays true to the principles he ran on.
Elizabeth Warren was a Republican who thought people used bankruptcy as a means of escaping personal liability.
Warren later recalled that she had begun her research believing that most people filing for bankruptcy were either working the system or had been irresponsible in incurring debts, but that she concluded that such abuse was in fact rare and that the legal framework for bankruptcy was poorly designed, describing the way the research challenged her fundamental beliefs as "worse than disillusionment" and "like being shocked at a deep-down level".
It was after that Elizabeth Warren moved to become more progressive about how bankruptcy laws and financial regulations.
Widely regarded as a progressive, she was previously a registered Republican, changing her registration to Democrat in 1996. According to Warren, in the six presidential elections she voted in before 1996, she cast her ballot for just one GOP nominee—Gerald Ford in 1976. Her conservatism at the time was not rooted in social issues like abortion or gay rights, but rather on economic policy.
Ooh, thank you! I may wish she were further left, but I don’t doubt that she earnestly believes in the views she says she holds, which was what I was wondering.
Does anyone know of any examples of politicians swinging hard in the opposite direction?
I just learned today that Hitler was a lefty in his early days. True story.

Someone describing themselves as a tree hugging progressive railing against supporting society's most vulnerable can go and fuck themselves with a fishing rod though.
You'd be looking at some early 20th century interpretations of leftism though, which is an important nuance. Lenin was a member of the Russian Social Democrats, but most people probably wouldn't attribute his legacy to Social Democracy.
‘ years later, shifted to the Republican Party and to becoming a strong supporter of Trump.’
Lindy Li was a part of Harris’s campaign. Within the time period of them losing the election -> the inauguration she was already a part of Trumps team.
She has zero credibility and is just a token former Democrat for the GOP to parade around. Disgusting.
No, it's a good demonstration on their common lack of values. They have no class solidarity and will turn on anyone who has helped them in the past if they think they'll get ahead.
Dude, you can't be satisfied by bites of moral superiority, it isn't useful to you. Class solidarity doesn't mean that they have solidarity with you because they strive for unity or whatever, it means that they have solidarity with people in the same socioeconomic class as themselves. Yes, they are self-interested and they exclude people who are not in their class from positions of power within the state. They correctly identify that most Americans have been neglected functional knowledge on how their system works -- both literally as in the state and philosophically/sociologically as in how ideas work and why certain people subscribe to certain values -- and make use of a "two-party" system to occlude their common interest in capital and hegemony. Democrats and Republicans do not differ on fundamental principles of how society should work, and they share those principles with anyone alive who hoards wealth because they all are in a class that is constructed through wealth hoarding, that's the solidarity.
That someone can work for either party without missing a step demonstrates that there is not a fundamental difference between the two in a very funny way.
“I have a very hard time believing that the 42 million people who are on SNAP all qualify,” Li said, speaking on Newsmax. “Someone on Newsmax said last night [that] maybe people should start making better choices so they don't have to rely on the government day in and day out. What happened to personal responsibility? It used to be an American ideal!”
“We have to be very clear what's happening here: they built a dependency empire, and it is crumbling right now! And President Trump isn't starving kids – he's starving socialist beasts,” Li said.
“He's starving the handouts for millions of illegal aliens; why are we putting them first when we have so many Americans – millions of Americans – suffering on the streets? Why are we prioritizing illegals? That is a question that Democrats need to answer.”
If I was able to become king I would levy 2000% taxes on news corporations that openly allow misinformation to be spread on their platform. I am so sick of this absolute lying they allow on the “news”. Illegal immigrants DONT QUALIFY FOR SNAP, WIC, OR MEDICARE/MEDICAID.
Yeah, but you often find the people who need the help are least inclined to vote for it.
I remember a story from a few years ago, some article about poverty. A disabled guy from Liverpool, unable to work, his 12 year old daughter was having to collect from the food bank for him, no heating. "I voted for the Conservatives, I just think they're best for the country", he said, presumably while applying his clown make-up.
Yzma: "It is none of MY concern whether your family has...what was it again?"
Peasant: "Uhh, food?"
Yzma: "HAH! You really should have thought of that before you became peasants!"
Let's stop pretending like MAGA republicans are upset about the state of SNAP. They get to destroy a program that they already wanted to destroy and get to try and pin the blame on Democrats in the process. It's a win win for them.
I was just arguing with my mom about this and she said it's good people are losing the benefits because she knows people don't need SNAP, despite needing them herself.
She then went on to name a few people who receive $800 for their 5 kids and simply sell the card to someone else to get cash for drugs and ask me how to solve that problem.
perhaps worth pointing out too… focusing on the minimal abuse as a reason the whole program should be cut is very american. i think the rest of the world the attitude is much more that a thing is necessary and abuse is a cost of doing business (like shoplifting: just because there’s some shoplifting doesn’t mean you close the whole store)… it’s very much nobody “undeserving” should get rewarded before people need help
had to search for that :p yeah aye - we had the same in aus (called jobkeeper)… our conservatives introduced it, and it was hugely successful at keeping people employed but also massively abused by big companies
JobKeeper is both the largest rort in Australian history and the most successful job saver
overall there were some reports written about it after the fact: lessons learned etc, but i think people don’t really blame the conservatives for the abuse… it was a programme that was quickly conceived of, and implemented very fast and it achieved a very important purpose. was it wasteful? sure… was it or something like it necessary? also very much yes
I have a business that was fully shut down for the pandemic quarantine, and I applied for PPP numerous times, and got turned down for a different reason every time. If the PPP wasn't meant for businesses like mine, who were directly closed because of the quarantine, than who was it intended for?
Then I realized - It was a MAGA program, of course it was a scam. It wasn't meant for me, I'm an honest, ethical business owner.
Yeah that sounds about like the line of reasoning I'd expect from conservatives in my family. The problem is that you gave them something at all. They made you a sucker. Stop
helping people. etc.
They'd just terminate the thought there, and not move on to wonder if it could it be some other problem the system could help them with other than today's cart of groceries. My goodness, they might accidentally save a life and not even know it!
She then went on to name a few people who receive $800 for their 5 kids and simply sell the card to someone else to get cash for drugs and ask me how to solve that problem.
That problem is easy to solve. Just stop telling that lie, because that's the only way that situation exists. It's a complete MAGA fantasy.
And if your mother gets SNAP, and is happy it's gone, remember that about three weeks from now, when she's begging you to buy her groceries. If you buy her anything, make it a big pack of ramen, and a couple of tins of sardines.
"He's starving the handouts for millions of illegal aliens; why are we putting them first when we have so many Americans – millions of Americans – suffering on the streets? Why are we prioritizing illegals? That is a question that Democrats need to answer.”
Erm....you aren't helping the Americans either lady
Billionaires always out there telling people to have more kids. Billionaires out there always trying to defund and destroy everything that helps kids. Billionaires are always out there grifting all the tax money and getting the politicians they own to destroy social safety nets. Billionaires always out there raping kids. Billionaires always out there jacking up the prices on food, water, utilities, healthcare and housing. Billionaires always out there refusing to pay a wage that allows people to survive in their rigged system. Maybe the better choice we should make is not having billionaires.
They're a bunch of scum-sucking motherless goats, but strategically, they're running rings around the Democratic Party. Having a fucking insane strategy still beats having no strategy.
They call it the American dream but always, always forget that the math just doesn't work if everyone fulfils it. This so-called American dream fundamentally requires that the other 99 get trampled under. But they keep on selling the same rhetoric, and Americans fall for it, again and again and again and again
How fucking stupid does a person of color have to be, to be a fucking republikkklan?
She may be "one of the good ones" now, like Stephen Fucking Cheung, but they will be rejected and turned upon when other prey are scarce. Deservedly.
I'm not American, but how do you spell "eat shit"? I want every GOP voter to "eat shit", cause the plague is spreading even to my longitudes. Help me out, thanks in advance.
I know the USA's media landscape is extremely fucked but still, I'm amazed "starving socialist beasbeasts" isn't called out for the raving lunacy that it is.
These fucking commie leftists just want handouts from MY TAXES (if i paid taxes). Grease soaked cardboard is edible, and there is nothing in the bible about cannibalism, Clarisse...
I see lots of people on Lemmy without much compassion for the people on the other team. I don't see how both teams lacking compassion will fix this shit stain of a situation.
I’m empathetic about their plight, but I feel no compassion. I’m sure the assholes who voted for the leopard and then got bit by the leopard are in a shitty situation. I hope things work out for them. I hope they don’t suffer too much, but I won’t lift a finger to help them.
If you're defining compassion as believing everyone has the same human rights then I've got loads of it. The problem with the folks you're talking about is that they don't believe the same. Whether or not they deserve what they get or get what they deserve is out of scope for my definition of compassion.

Zink@programming.dev · 9 pts · 301d
Yeah that sounds about like the line of reasoning I'd expect from conservatives in my family. The problem is that you gave them something at all. They made you a sucker. Stop helping people. etc.
They'd just terminate the thought there, and not move on to wonder if it could it be some other problem the system could help them with other than today's cart of groceries. My goodness, they might accidentally save a life and not even know it!
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 301d

Don't forget the connection between Billionaries and child sex traffic (ie. Epstein Files).
Maybe that's the reason they want more impoverished childs around.
Easier targets.

They call it the American dream but always, always forget that the math just doesn't work if everyone fulfils it. This so-called American dream fundamentally requires that the other 99 get trampled under. But they keep on selling the same rhetoric, and Americans fall for it, again and again and again and again

I see lots of people on Lemmy without much compassion for the people on the other team. I don't see how both teams lacking compassion will fix this shit stain of a situation.

Food ought to be a human right and that extends to people who voted for an administration that's trying to make that worse than it already is.
CarrmynCarnage@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 4 pts · 301d
Food is a human right. I still have no compassion for people who would rather see me starving or dead...
I can hold no compassion for people and still agree that they deserve to live. I'm not callous.
Let me say it louder for the people that need to hear it.
Everyone gets a plate but not everyone will have a place at the table.

I’m empathetic about their plight, but I feel no compassion. I’m sure the assholes who voted for the leopard and then got bit by the leopard are in a shitty situation. I hope things work out for them. I hope they don’t suffer too much, but I won’t lift a finger to help them.

FridaySteve@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 301d
If you're defining compassion as believing everyone has the same human rights then I've got loads of it. The problem with the folks you're talking about is that they don't believe the same. Whether or not they deserve what they get or get what they deserve is out of scope for my definition of compassion.
