Wasn't that the whole point of the scene?

Endymion_Mallorn@kbin.melroy.org · 61 pts · 307d

Yup. The Rohirrim see this Elf standing there bitching at this maybe-Gondorian, maybe the King of the West, maybe just another weird Ranger, and the two of them are obviously arguing in a foreign language like the Rohirrim don't matter (which is how Men see Elves - stuck-up and isolationist, ignorant of the plight of Men), and then the Ranger says something that cuts straight to their own philosophy.

Good point actually. It's been a while since I've watched these films and I remember this scene being emotional but I don't think I thought about it too hard beyond that. But you're right, he probably purposely says that in a language they'll understand, to be on their level and an honest leader.

Hupf@feddit.org · 2 pts · 306d

βœ¨πŸŒŸπŸ’« <using escape characters correctly> πŸ’«πŸŒŸβœ¨ would be another option.

...ad hominem takes your argument down...

JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl · 5 pts · 306d (6 replies)
  1. It is not an argument, it is a joke comment, it is not trying to persuade anyone of anything. It is a lighthearted joke.

  2. Making a comment about someone's writing style isn't ad-hominem, also the original comment didn't make an argument at all, it just said that your opinion is wrong, which is a joke as an opinion literally can't be factually incorrect by definition. Here is a pretty good resource for learning about ad-hominem in practice.

That being said, you also fell into the very common fallacy fallacy.

Some people know how to describe why they feel a certain way about something. Some people use a bidet.

Rohirrim, perhaps?

Secret_Music@crazypeople.online · 2 pts · 306d

Between this and "people", which I also like, this got more upvotes. So I'm gonna go ahead and edit the title with your suggestion.
