No it definitely got weird. At least in my case. We talked on the phone a lot and she asked me multiple times to fly out to California to meet her. She even ended up talking to my mom on the phone. I'll just say my parents aren't good parents or even good people, but whatever small amount of concern my mom had was gone after that. I was in middle school so there wasn't any way I could have flown out to meet her so maybe that's why my parents stopped caring. Regardless, the woman eventually lost interest. At the time I didn't even realize how weird it was.
The scarier part to me I think is that you absolutely could have. My cousin was in middle school in the 90’s, he graduated high school in 2001 at 18 for context. My aunt and uncle were divorced and would drop him off at the airport to fly to each other on the other side of the country. He was like six or seven when they started and it went on for a decade until his dad moved back close to graduation.
You're right, the more I think about it something definitely could have happened had one of us scraped the money together for a flight. Another reason my mom might have been fine with it is that she was in high-school when she met my dad and he was 10 years older than her. She also let my sisters boyfriend move in when she was still in high-school and he was a lot older than her too so I could definitely see her letting me go. Like I said my parents were not good parents at all.
I completely understand bad parents, I’m no contact with mine for much different reasons so I can’t directly relate but I can empathize a bit I think. I appreciate you sharing your story and I’m glad nothing happened with that gal while you were so young. Thank you for sharing the story, feels kind of comforting in a way that also makes me feel like shit for feeling comfort in hearing about others stories/situations.
No worries! That is just the tip of the iceberg for the extremely fucked up childhood my siblings and I had. I've mostly made my peace with it, but my siblings still don't talk to certain parents and I don't blame them at all. We went through every kind of abuse a child can go through between my dad, mom, and step-dad. I just figured I'd share my experience since I just remembered it happened when I came across that meme.
I definitely get that feeling though. It is comforting to know that you weren't alone in having had to deal with shitty adults as a child. I think it's important for everyone to realize that some people should just never have kids regardless of what's expected of people. My parents definitely should never have had children and I never will myself. I really think unless you are willing to sacrifice your time and freedom and dreams you shouldn't have kids. Unfortunately, too many parents treat kids as extensions of themselves or accessories to their own life.

Upon closer inspection, now it looks like the guy from the TIL youtube channel. Given my skillz, probably not him but im reasonably confident in saying theyre close probably
WoW was a magically place. I played with a random dude for 1-2 months leveling up my 1st char, and when we tried the new voice chat i figure out he was a 38 years old man with a deep bass voice (i was 18).
Some time after in a dungeon run with random people, in voice chat popped a kid with a voice so soft... i thought that was a girl, but no he was a 13 year old boy. I was like what is happening in this game?
Literally yes, I didnt realize til I was older that it was pretty messed up for an older woman to have a romantic relationship with a 16 year old over the internet/phone.
Both her and her fiance played in the same guild I did, we would be in ventrilo most days for like two years straight.
She ended up getting upset when she overheard a friend of mine calling her a cougar, and we never spoke again.
I tried reaching out to her like a decade later on facebook but never got a response. I still feel really mixed emotions about the whole thing honestly.
