I went in thinking "ok, fan fiction, alternate take on the universe", and it was an ok show with some surprisingly great parts. Then the season two plot was just a turtle fucking a snail, and I was done.
Edit: to be clear, it was slow motion WTF, why is this nothing happening?
Eh I had accepted the major and completely unnecessary changes. In fact, I got used to them and was really enjoying it in the last season as it was finally getting better.
Maybe you can clear this up for me, but I didn't like it because I couldn't "connect" with any of the characters. Many of the scenes, for all the amazing set, costume, and effects work, just felt flat and uninteresting. Also, the story as told just felt odd like it was hard to follow for some reason. Do you happen to know of a better breakdown of what went wrong here? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills since I can't exactly quantify why I found something with high production values not hitting the mark somehow.
I think it just had that ineffable quality of an adaptation where the people making it genuinely did not give a fuck about the source material. The fact that it ostensibly comes from such a great source gives their shitty, poorly thought out decisions an unearned confidence and gravity.
Most of the people watching it will never know that it shat all over all the things that made Wheel of Time great.
The books are slow at times, but everything has a payoff. Robert Jordan was ridiculously meticulous, where every little thing he introduced had a meaning, and more importantly everything followed a consistent set of rules. Like he wouldn't just give a modern Aes Sedai the ability to rendezvous with her lover 400 miles away just to create a sexy side plot. And if he did give her that ability, he'd have done it within the framework of the rules. Like the showrunners could have used that to introduce Tel'aran'rhiod (world of dreams) a little early, probably through the use of a ter'angreal (magical artifact with a specific function). Instead they didn't give a shit.
When it comes right down to it, they just didn't respect their audience. And when a show doesn't respect its audience, it leaves a stink.
Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, The Witcher, The wheel of Time, have all been huge nerd properties. They were each in their own way, fantastic, and each of them destroyed by someone who either didnt understand them, or wanted to turn them into something else.
I fear the very same thing is about to befall one more 90s/00s nerd show. God knows what theyre about to do to Buffy, but I fear for that one as well.
I'm going to remain cautiously optimisic, they have a lot of the original SG-1 and Atlantis writers and team, as well as some of the crew associated to the movies. But to be honest I'm scared, and 10 episode seasons is already a taste for amazons poor management.
(I won't get over the SIX episodes for the final season of the Expanse, which I'd still consider a content quality win as far as amazon is involved)
Well, I saw that the showrunner is the same guy that was the show runner for the Quantum leap reboot... I guess thats probably a good indicator of where his heads at in bringing back old properties. It was also set up as a sequel to the older show. I guess we'll see, but I just cant be optimistic. I would LOVE to be proven wrong though. LOVE IT.
Exactly! I was riding in on a noble steed to say how even the named series were okay, but definitely deviated from the source material in ways that altered the morals and viewpoint being pushed (I'll never forgive what they did to my amos). Like, it's always going to happen when you change mediums. Just look at how many arguments about how 'all batman does is beat up people' that are constantly seen, which is all thanks to the arkham games where, predictably because it's easy to build the gameplay around, all batman does is beat up thousands of folks. The fear is that even here, without a change of medium, the desire to adapt it to a modern audience is going to drive the writers to ruin the old feeling of the series. Hell, even when produced in the nearly same time frame, the 'adaptation' of star gate universe didn't do well.
But that's not what we're getting. Lot's of series either are or have become 10 epusides of over-bloated visual spectical with bad writing desperately trying to be a 10 hour movie.
I will take 20 episodes of low budget gold over 10 episodes of shiny poop.
Ok? Good thing a full season is only ~20? And the benefit of a full season is the character development, which is where the gold comes from, not some 10 episode story you forget about next week.
10 would me that have to omit many things, but currently streaming are penny pinchers so they mostly only do 8-10 at the most. i think many shows on prime suffered because the budget went to ROP seasons.
But it's Bezos! I'm not giving Bezos any more money.
The new Critical Role cartoon series is out as well, and despite being a fan, I ain't watching that because it's on Prime. (I'm also not pirating it btw, I'll keep hoping that it'll eventually get released on BluRay or something)
Out of principle. If I can't legally access the content (whether out of refusal to pay a billionaire anymore money or any other reason), I won't consume it in any other way.
When I was a poor student I pirated a lot, but now that I'm making money, I'm making the concious decision to not pirate anymore.
So in this case it means, unless they get released on physical media, I won't be able to watch it.
It's out of principle that I do pirate things. The entertainment conglomerates have used their money and power to completely warp the copyright system so that it hurts the public and benefits them. They've abused it so that it doesn't even benefit artists anymore. As some have said, lengthening or strengthening copyright at this point is basically just like giving a bullied kid more money. The money goes to the bullies and the kid just gets beaten up again.
Why would you think it's morally right to obey an unjust law?
I would guess they want the Critical Roll crew to get paid, and there are far better ways than passively giving them watch time on a streaming service.
Edit: I don't follow them, but maybe they have a patreon?
Edit 2: I just realized that since they distributed through Amazon, they probably can't distribute their own content. So sail the seas or feed the beast, I guess.
I got my start in print publishing via Amazon and they pretty much own whatever I published through them. It's easy to jump in, difficult to climb out.
I imagine if you buy merch from them, they keep a lot more than their share of the streaming revenues. Beacon probably also gives them more money directly. But, I imagine that in Hollywood having a big successful show on a major network is probably better for your career than making money in ways that the Hollywood press doesn't report on.
How about judging the series after it came out instead of judging a book by its cover? Even if the chances of it being good are slim, it still has a chance. And it would be awful to ignore an amazing series based on assumptions.
I think the joke is more like judging the book by its publisher than by its cover. I would be hyped if all we saw was the cover, but that's probably also missing the point of giving the show a chance to either excite or disappoint.
It’s not about the book, it’s the profits will go to evil villains and no one needs to see this so bad that it’s worth it.
They say capitalism can be managed by customers controlling their spending but people regularly put their own convenience above everyone else and so that never happens. Nestle doesn’t have to be good because people will still buy their garbage even if they printed “we stole the water to make this” right on the label.
It’s just a TV show. If you can’t live without it then you’re completely broken.
The money comes from somewhere shitty always with these things. All you can do is hope they stay out of it as much as possible and let the artists do their thing
I didn’t mind ROP. I take it for what it is, expensive fan fic. If we stick to the Tolkien lore to the letter, we would have had a dancing jack black singing rhymes in a yellow hat to Elijah wood.
We live in this weird time where a tv show is either a 10/10 or it’s “unwatchable garbage” people have no nuance anymore
I feel like the only really good Bethesda game besides Skyrim that I've played is Dishonored, and coincidentally that's the one developer/studio that Bethesda decided to close down
Nope. My first Elder Scrolls was Skyrim. My first Fallout was 4, which felt kinda meh.
EDIT for better context: I was born in soviet union and we didn't really get western games, only some specific ones that got translated like Might of Magic 6-8
I'd highly recommend Dishonored 2, Prey, and Deathloop as well. You will love them if you like Dishonored 1.
As for being Bethesda... it's confusing.
There's Bethesda Softworks, which is a giant publisher, a 'brand' with a bunch of studios under them. Including Arkane.
Then there's Bethesda Game Studios, the game dev, owned by Bethesda Softworks. When most gamers say 'Bethesda', they're usually referring to BGS, as they're the ones that make the Elder Scrolls/Fallout games, as well as Starfield.
...And just to add to the confusion, all this was bought by Microsoft.
It's not going to be a total reboot either! Same universe as produced that had Jack O'Neil played by Richard Dean Anderson. I hope they guest star Amanda Tapping at least once.
Or, what if the whole thing is about the Ancients before they ascended?
i suspect an origin story wont work either, they rarely recieve good reviews, as a subplot it would be great. lets hope it something like a new galaxy, or unexplored part of space.
This can vary a lot from Stargate fan to Stargate fan, is Universe quality writing a good thing or a bad thing?
From seeing the people in charge and how they handled the announcement, I'm kind of expecting something in line with SG-1/Atlantis, but looking forward to hearing more about the direction.
is Universe quality writing a good thing or a bad thing?
It's a bad thing.
Stargate, much of the time, was competency porn. Writers threw that away and did a man-vs-man-survival style story in an enclosed space aboard a runaway starship. The story heavily borrowed cues from LOST and Battlestar Galactica (reboot) instead, relying heavily on characters spontaneously acting blind/deaf/dumb for no reason, seemingly as a plot-device to keep the drama going. The way to survival and broader frontiers was clearly to just work together, but that was just constantly and frustratingly out of reach. When the audience is used to the opposite of all that, it makes for a very miserable watch.
Tbf, I still enjoyed it for what it was, while recognizing it was very different and not as good as it's predecessors. So long as it isn't worse than that, I'm happy for new Stargate content, although I'm holding out hope it will be more like the earlier iterations.
Charitably, I could say that they were a little ahead of their time. Something I've noticed about nearly all of the best TV/Movies/etc. these days is that they're all heavily character-focused. It's the well-written characters that are the soul of good stories, and the situations and settings are just a vehicles for character exploration and interaction. So, Universe, from my perspective, was an attempt to make a character-focused show.
But the characters they WROTE in Universe... well, there were a few really good ones, a few reeeeeeeeeeally not so good ones, and a lot of rather boring mediocre ones.
That being said, it's still Stargate. I stillnreally liked the show and wasnpissed it got cancelled. I refuse to believe it was because the show got really bad numbers, on its own merit. But there is quite a lot to criticize about it.
None of the stuff I'm reading comments on the large following sg1 had due to it's realistic depiction of military life (sans the obvious science fiction aspects). I know a fair amount of veterans who found watching it validating to the both positive and negative aspects of their lived experience (I interact a decent amount with veterans after the us military industrial complex is done chewing them up and spitting them out for the promise of alleviating their poverty).
I think I kinda petered out at Season 8. There could be goofy episodes thrown in (Wormhole X-Treme, Groundhog Day, whatever) but it also managed some drama. They lightened up a little when Sci-Fi Channel took over, they were trying to make ADULT tv when it was, what? Starz? That owned them at first.
Bringing back Team America: Space Police was bad enough but can't say I'm worried. It's going to be done by the creator of Blindspot. This is dead on arrival, like everything else he's made since. But yeah. I'd be worried if I were a fan. Just because he worked on Atlantis doesn't mean shit when everything else he has made has been shit.
agreed, invincible had a good thing going for it, until ROP took away all the funding , THE ANIMations suffered pretty poorly, besides the long ass wait between seasons and how short they are, people just read the comics instead.(its the same issue with AOT)

Produced by just means "paid for by," anyway.
So there's a chance it can still suck if Amazon pays the wrong people to make it.

The showrunner worked on all three of the TV series so as long as he doesn’t try something like rebooting SGU it might be good.
But if it starts with a drastically older Robert Carlyle defrosting I’m only giving it two episodes.

Then it got cancelled for no reason.
dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 276d
Maybe you can clear this up for me, but I didn't like it because I couldn't "connect" with any of the characters. Many of the scenes, for all the amazing set, costume, and effects work, just felt flat and uninteresting. Also, the story as told just felt odd like it was hard to follow for some reason. Do you happen to know of a better breakdown of what went wrong here? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills since I can't exactly quantify why I found something with high production values not hitting the mark somehow.
moakley@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 275d

Bennyboybumberchums@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 275d
Well, I saw that the showrunner is the same guy that was the show runner for the Quantum leap reboot... I guess thats probably a good indicator of where his heads at in bringing back old properties. It was also set up as a sequel to the older show. I guess we'll see, but I just cant be optimistic. I would LOVE to be proven wrong though. LOVE IT.
burntbacon@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 276d

BuckenBerry@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 276d

madjo@feddit.nl · 3 pts · 276d
Out of principle. If I can't legally access the content (whether out of refusal to pay a billionaire anymore money or any other reason), I won't consume it in any other way.
When I was a poor student I pirated a lot, but now that I'm making money, I'm making the concious decision to not pirate anymore.
So in this case it means, unless they get released on physical media, I won't be able to watch it.
merc@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 276d
It's out of principle that I do pirate things. The entertainment conglomerates have used their money and power to completely warp the copyright system so that it hurts the public and benefits them. They've abused it so that it doesn't even benefit artists anymore. As some have said, lengthening or strengthening copyright at this point is basically just like giving a bullied kid more money. The money goes to the bullies and the kid just gets beaten up again.
Why would you think it's morally right to obey an unjust law?

Rcklsabndn@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 276d
I would guess they want the Critical Roll crew to get paid, and there are far better ways than passively giving them watch time on a streaming service.
Edit: I don't follow them, but maybe they have a patreon?
Edit 2: I just realized that since they distributed through Amazon, they probably can't distribute their own content. So sail the seas or feed the beast, I guess.
I got my start in print publishing via Amazon and they pretty much own whatever I published through them. It's easy to jump in, difficult to climb out.
madjo@feddit.nl · 2 pts · 276d
I wish they would put their cartoon also on their own streaming platform Beacon. But alas, Bezos prefers exclusivity.
merc@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 276d
I imagine if you buy merch from them, they keep a lot more than their share of the streaming revenues. Beacon probably also gives them more money directly. But, I imagine that in Hollywood having a big successful show on a major network is probably better for your career than making money in ways that the Hollywood press doesn't report on.

Dishonored is from Arkane: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkane_Studios#Games_developed
When most gamers say 'Bethesda', they're usually referring to BGS, as they're the ones that make the Elder Scrolls/Fallout games, as well as Starfield.
...And just to add to the confusion, all this was bought by Microsoft.

dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 276d

It's a mixed bag, for me.
