Well, don’t eat it dry out of the tub.

bastion@feddit.nl · 18 pts · 287d (1 reply)

makes a suffering disgusted face and spoons another mouthful into my face

why are you making me do this?!

Don't make a waffle out of it.

I knew who this was going to be before clicking the link.

It’s the food of the future!

_hovi_@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 287d (1 reply)

Really? It's my preferred "flavour" since I just add it to smoothies anyway. Recently had it with açai top and that was great. Just tastes mildly milky to me

edwardbear@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 286d

Exact same thing. I put like a teaspoonful salted caramel flavoured peanut butter, add some blueberries, oats and yogurt. Unflavoured protein just makes this concoction a bit creamier.

khannie@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 286d

I used to buy a lot of this back in the day. It is great in stuff like pancakes or anything else you would add milk to.

I used to soak oats in water overnight then blend with the powder and (brace for impact) some cottage cheese and baking powder to make really nice pancakes. I know you're WTF'ing at the cottage cheese but it softens them and adds no flavour. They are quite dry without it. High protein pancakes to start the day with some jam or whatever was a big win when I was trying to cut weight and not lose muscle.

In a shaker with a bit of cocoa and finely ground sugar and milk (or sweetener and water if you're watching calories) and it's fine. On it's own, mixed with water it's 100% bleh.

I just did the exact same with Pea Protein Powder. Then I compounded the mistake by trying it plain ... disgust. Not sure how to use it up now.

Gnugit@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 287d (5 replies)

I use this one by choice and mix it with ovaltine, a chocolate flavoured malt beverage.

valkyre09@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 286d (3 replies)

I’m giggling at the thought of you being an internet bot that ovaltine have commissioned to push sales pre Christmas

Gnugit@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 286d

Seriously though, the unflavoured pea protein is $10 and the flavoured is $25, a tin of ovaltine is like $7. It works for me

mPony@kbin.earth · 5 pts · 286d

It snowed last night and my driveway needs to be shoveled, but I just mixed it with ovaltine, a chocolate flavoured malt beverage.

Now I have Snowvaltine

Gnugit@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 286d

Definitely don't use Milo 🫣

could you please describe the flavor?

lechongous@programming.dev · 6 pts · 286d

It tastes like it smells when you leave your used shaker in the sink overnight

dohpaz42@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 287d

un?

etchinghillside@reddthat.com · 5 pts · 287d

Dry saliva.

mPony@kbin.earth · 3 pts · 286d

it tastes a bit like lactobacillus

actionjbone@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 287d (2 replies)

How can it taste bad if it's unflavored?

higgsboson@piefed.social · 13 pts · 286d (1 reply)

Unflavored usually means "no added flavor." In English I would use the word "flavorless" to mean something that literally has has no flavor. Meanwhile, as an example, if a food does have vanilla added, it would be appropriate to call it "vanilla-flavored."

actionjbone@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 286d

(that's the joke)

Gnugit@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 287d

Mix it with ovaltine, a chocolate flavoured malt beverage powder.

lessthanluigi@lemmy.sdf.org · 5 pts · 287d

That it does. So does the GHOST Protein Cereal as well. Hella dry

PunnyName@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 287d

I did similar with psyllium husk. Never again, I'll get that store branded Metamucil from now on.

My fix, mix with flavored powders until you're done with it, ideally with milk (the protein, not the husk), or suck it down asap.

The normal human being doesn't need more protein than he gets naturally through food

paultimate14@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 286d (4 replies)

That is heavily dependent upon the food.

Protein powder is often used as a meal replacement. The goal may not be to increase protein consumption, but to reduce other things without reducing protein.

Akasazh@feddit.nl · 0 pts · 286d (3 replies)

Dietary scientists recommend about 150-200 grams per day. Only if you are a highly active athlete you might need more.

jet@hackertalks.com · 1 pts · 282d

How many people are getting 150g of real bioavailabile protein every day?

paultimate14@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 286d (1 reply)

Yes, so if you add ~20g of protein to your diet with protein powder, and skip a meal that would have provided you with ~20g of protein but also would have included carbs and fats, the net result is that you are cutting curbs and fats.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here.

Akasazh@feddit.nl · -1 pts · 286d

My point is the unless you're an Olympic athlete protein powder or additives are useless.

Yet industry crams it in every orifice as people are told it's healthy, whilst it really is not.

And listen of people want to do it, then that's ok, my main point of aggravation is the misinformation and needless shilling of the stuff.

chaitae3@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 286d (3 replies)

While that is true, there are many, many studies now that show beneficial effects to physical and neurological health and longevity from an intake that is higher than recommended in the 80s or 90s.

Akasazh@feddit.nl · 1 pts · 286d (2 replies)

The recommended dose is about 200 grams per day. Any surplus is just discarded. The current protein everything fad is really crazy.

UndercoverUlrikHD@programming.dev · 1 pts · 286d

Dosage depends on the size of the person, there is no flat number. For people who lift with the intention of gaining muscle size, there's is a positive trend of additional hypertrophy that starts to flatten out at around 1,6g/kg.

Krudler@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 286d

Not only is it discarded, it's actually bad for the body to have to piss this out constantly.

If your pee is foamy, you're eating way too much protein!!!
