There was actually a guy mentioned in the Panama papers who went to prison. Not for the tax fraud, but for the murder of a journalist who was reporting on the tax fraud. Guy hired people to bomb her car, they're all are in prison now.

but that was the fall guy, not people in the panama papers.
chaogomu@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 185d
No, that was literally one of the rich assholes. Daphne Caruana Galizia was reporting on his finacial crimes when he decided that he should just have her killed.
But because that shit does not work like the movies say it does, he and his henchmen all got caught. And since society is not as willing to allow murder as it is financial crimes.
Fenech still hasn't gone to trial, but after 5 years in jail he was granted bail. This was not popular, because of the bribery.

They are just sending these things around via email? Without encryption and everything?
Natanael@infosec.pub · 8 pts · 185d
Yes.
Meanwhile intelligence agencies says they want to stop encryption to help them investigate crime...
ViceroTempus@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 185d
Well how else can they nip investigations on their Oligarchic Overlords in the bud? Or stop the working class from organizing?
Because it certainly isn't to stop evil, vile, shit from happening in the world. So far from what we've seen, the legal system works for evil. It protects these deeply rooted child rapists at every turn. So they certainly don't need to worry about encryption.

adhd_traco@piefed.social · 1 pts · 185d
Oh, you mean the email exchanges between the FBI that are included in the newly released files. I didn't look at it deeply enough yet. But I'm guessing even if they have/had some degree of security in their mailing system, since those emails are relevant to the case, they were required to be added to the dossier regardless at some point.

we need patriarchy fuelled capitalism to end so bad. this is a world of violence and cruel power games, with its main victims being the poor and homeless, children, women and all workers. we need to dismantle this shit.
I hope to see more awareness of this in the close future.
Tiger666@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 185d
Capitalism, just capitalism to end.
dandylion@lemmy.zip · -1 pts · 185d
so patriarchy is alright? or are you implying there is no patriarchy without capitalism?
Tiger666@lemmy.ca · 9 pts · 185d
Im not implying anything. There is no such thing as patriarchal capitalism there is just capitalism.
You are complicating the issue by adding sexism to the mix.
Capital doesnt care if its male or female. Capitalists only care about their bottom line.
I get that you see mostly men in power but the truth is it would be the same if women owned the means of production.
So there is no such thing as ethical capitalism there is just capitalism and its destroying our world and society.
JennyLaFae@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 7 pts · 185d
Patriarchy is a tool capitalism uses to keep the people fighting amongst themselves. Nesting dolls of bigotry.
dandylion@lemmy.zip · -3 pts · 185d
how is bringing up patriarchy - the system which enables capitalism and vice versa - added sexism?
we've all agreed for a long time that "capitalism is bad". did anything change? the only way to change things is to look very closely and with awareness at what and who keeps these power dynamics up. if you think patriarchy has nothing to do with this, I highly recommend you educate yourself about it. I wonder why even on lemmy so many don't get this connection.
Cosmonauticus@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 185d
Its almost always white women who bring up patriarchy because they get to excuse themselves from the system that they've support and benefited from
dandylion@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 185d
we can be privilege-aware (we should btw) and still want equality for all.
rhombus@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 185d
Maybe capitalism enables patriarchy through entrenched power structures propping up men, but it generally enables all kinds of cultural hierarchies as tools to keep the masses divided. Singling out any division as something that enables capitalism doesnât make much sense.

Where are all the people saying "release the files"? Are they gonna shift the goal post now and call everything that happens a distraction from further releasing more files? When the US starts a major conflict with Iran tomorrow, are the comments gonna be memes about the Epstein files?

Why would the legal system built for the ultra wealthy, by the ultra wealthy come down on Trump?
Frankly this is proof you cannot use their legal system to bring them down. If we want Justice then it's going to need to be Mob Justice or some other form of Justice that exists outside of their legal system.

The French had some good ideas for that, back in the day.
MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world · -8 pts · 185d
No, they didn't. The French Revolution was a cluster fuck and ultimately failed miserably.
seejur@lemmy.world · 20 pts · 185d
Considering most monarchies are no more in Europe, it didn't really fail miserably
MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 185d
Do you have any grasp of history?
It resulted in a dictatorship and then a return of the monarchy.
It DID NOT magically remove all monarchies in Europe, that is a ridiculous ahistorical claim. It didn't even ultimately remove the monarchy in fucking France.
seejur@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 185d
It was the start, because even if Emperor's went back, installed by foreign powers, they were heavily checked by other institutions, and removed again and again by the citizens of france. It ended effectively the age of absolutism and started democratic movements.
So yes, it was definitely important for democracies in Europe, a land entranced in absolutists kingdoms

How do you judge success or failure?
How would you respond to the claim that at the very least it permanently rewired the concept of legitimate government based on ideas like nation, citizenship and rights, even if the outcomes of that rewiring were neither linear nor immediate? Creating institutional templates, accelerating modern politics and seeding democracies?

Lobbyists selected by rich people tell politicians who to appoint to lead agencies. These people give directives and can get agents fired for disobeying.
Stopping it means removing "single points of failures" like not having such a powerful hierarchy, in addition to accountability measures (independent inspections, etc)

I can't tell about these newly reported findings since details about when it was first reported isn't clear (only dates are 2025, so Trump's FBI..). However I suspect in the wake of Epstein's death and that pictures of Trump hanging with Epstein all over the internet flooded the FBI with a lot of stuff, much of which probably was fiction analagous to the whole 'pizzagate' thing. In a way, this gives the Trump admin plenty of material to use as cover, they can release a firehose of crackpot grade material from 2020 while perhaps holding back more substantive material, say from 2014 and older, when the signal to noise ratio would be much better.
I'd be particularly interested in material that originated from before 2017 or so, when almost no random folks would be aware of Epstein at all. I wager it's in there as given Trump's nature and the known nature of Epstein's activities, absolutely you know Trump was all in on it. But I can also believe they would prioritize release of crackpot reports that lack credibility even if they are believable narratives.
