We’re back from holiday! Germany was great. Our favourite city was probably Hamburg because a) Miniatur Wunderland, b) Planten un Blomen and c) Hamburg DOM (we rode the big ferris wheel and there were fireworks! :D)

German tv was also funny because they have a lot of dubbed english shows. I had a great night lying in bed watching dubbed Gilmore Girls.

The people we met were all really friendly and nice, we had an awesome time. Thanks Germany!

Sounds fuckin' mint to be fair.

Get me some tourism and carbs.

CosmoNova@lemmy.world · 36 pts · 132d (2 replies)

You‘re in luck because German bakeries house 3 thousand different kinds of bread.

nightlily@leminal.space · 3 pts · 130d (1 reply)

To the extent that even locals just point and say „das da“ because who fucking knows what they’re calling each one.

"Ein HÀferblaubeerschmeckendorflibrötchen, bitte"

"mit Scharf, oder?"

"mit Wespen, bitte, danke!"

Someone must have fucked up, because when I visited Germany I was never handed my complimentary, human sized sausage. I still had plenty of sausage, but I feel like I missed out now

Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world · 55 pts · 132d (2 replies)

You need to report to the Willkommenswurstausgabestelle.

aeronmelon@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 132d (1 reply)

I couldn’t spell that if I was looking right at it while doing so.

Try the head rolling on keyboard method. You'll be 99% close every time.

ViatorOmnium@piefed.social · 32 pts · 132d (1 reply)

Did you remember to fill out the WillkommenmenschengrĂ¶ĂŸewurstanfrageformulare when you arrived?

jimerson@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 131d

My duolingo is paying off.. I understood that!

Rumo161@feddit.org · 4 pts · 131d

That sausage is perfectly average. Small even.

Draegur@lemmy.zip · 28 pts · 132d (9 replies)

What about the pretzels and the beer!

snooggums@piefed.world · 14 pts · 132d (1 reply)

Not enough hands to hold all four!

queerlilhayseed@piefed.blahaj.zone · 8 pts · 132d

Gonna have to get one of those hats that hold beer, and some sort of pretzel bandolier.

zaphod@sopuli.xyz · 7 pts · 131d (6 replies)

Hamburg isn't really a pretzel state. If you visit, get a Franzbrötchen. Beer is the same as everywhere else more or less.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 131d (1 reply)

If I'm ever visiting Hamburg, I'll be eating a Hamburger. Or perhaps s Hamburgerinne.

Samskara@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 130d

Hamburg is actually known for its fish buns.

Obi@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 131d (2 replies)

Doesn't that just mean French bread?

zaphod@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 131d (1 reply)

It's possible that the name originated during the napoleonic occupation of Hamburg, but there are other theories involving a baker named Franz. Anyway, it's neither french nor bread, it's a pastry.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 131d

They started selling those in my corner of Europe and the store (coop) calls them, roughly translated, "Franz's cinnamon pastry".

tetris11@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 128d

Franzbrötchen

Agreed, and get it from the train station. Fresh batch every 10minutes

e8CArkcAuLE@piefed.social · 19 pts · 132d (2 replies)

but don’t ask about the trains. or israel.

UnfortunateShort@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 131d (1 reply)

Oh, if you ask people about Israel, I think you will get the answer you expect. Support for Israel seems to be concentrated in political spheres, where I'd say it's about 50:50. Most ordinary people don't care about Israel per se, but they do care about war crimes by countries we call allies

e8CArkcAuLE@piefed.social · 1 pts · 131d

don’t ask about the StaatsrĂ€son.

HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works · 14 pts · 132d (1 reply)

Ooooooh Miniatur Wunderland!

I totally wanna go there after seeing in on TV! They have a whole show about the behind the scenes work called Wunderland XXL :)

limelight79@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 131d

It's amazing!

We saw it in 2016, and we took the behind the scenes tour (we requested an English version and they found someone to do it). The guide said they were going to bridge to another building across the water from them. I thought, "Yeah, right, that will never happen."

A few years later, a bridge went in and now they have trains in the other building, and running through the bridge. They did it!

Never been to Germany, but this makes me want to go, not going to lie.

Lemminary@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 131d (9 replies)

If I ever visit Germany, it'll be purely for the sausage. 😏

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 131d

Careful. Sausage in Germany is die Wurst.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 9 pts · 131d (7 replies)

Purely for the memes, go acquire yourself some VW original part 199 398 500 A

Lemminary@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 131d (2 replies)

Why does a sausage have a serial number?? Damn, Germany, you scary.

Bytemeister@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 130d

Ridiculous. It doesn't have a serial number...

A model number on the other hand...

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 130d

It's a VW original part because you need them to build Volkswagens! Specifically you need them to be in the bellies of the workers.

Schmuppes@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 130d (3 replies)

So the "A" means it's the original recipe. If they had introduced the "B" or "C" variant, it would have been sightly changed/improved, but all later variants would still fit the plate that was originally designed to have the "A" sausage on it.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 130d (2 replies)

This part actually breaks the rule because the B variant is ketchup, not an improved variant of the original

Schmuppes@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 130d (1 reply)

Oh my God...

I went to Germany not long ago and was surprised by how every restaurant had the same exact menu. Had to find the foreign restaurants to get other flavors.

EfreetSK@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 132d (3 replies)

Wait, isn't it like that in other countries also?

FurryMemesAccount@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 131d

In france you have to go to foreign restantrants to get repetitive menus (pizzerias, kebab places, etc)

Brkdncr@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 131d (1 reply)

No. Most restaurants have a selection of flavors. Germany was sausages on kraut, in water, or pounded out chicken/pork.

Rumo161@feddit.org · 3 pts · 131d

You havent been to an actual german Restaurant. That sounds like a tourist trap.

technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 131d

They've got some awesome falafel.

FelixCress@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 132d (3 replies)

What's the point of going somewhere and then looking for non-local food?

Brkdncr@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 131d (1 reply)

After a week the “German” food was repetitive. The “non-local” food was pretty unique as it was still tempered to German tastes and available food stock.

I definitely was looking for menus that had German items that were new to me but it wasn’t that easy by the end of the 2nd week.

The German food in the US doesn’t get close to the German restaurant experience though. The old buildings, the efficiency in getting you in, the abrupt “time to leave” even if you’re not done. Buying a keg of beer for the table.

glorkon@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 131d

the abrupt “time to leave” even if you’re not done

Seems like you went to the more touristy places. Or Munich. Or a touristy place in Munich. They tend to be a little brusque and unfriendly there... It really pays off to look for places on Maps which are highly rated and a little off the beaten path. Some real gems there. I could name a few restaurants in Berlin which serve awesome German (!= Bavarian!) food that isn't repetitive.
