Fucking finally.
Eat shit, fascists.

To be clear, Magyar is also a fascist but a bit less mask-off about his corruption. It's a (slight) improvement but not some progressive victory it's touted to be.

He's less good more slightly better, his social policies seem to be practically identical and his economic policies really only diverge in terms of the EU. Publically he speaks of anti corruption but considering he was involved in a scandal I'm not sure how much he'll do (he hasn't promised anything concrete yet). So it would be more accurate to say perfect is the enemy of marginally better.
rainwall@piefed.social · 15 pts · 113d
How so? Hes aligned with the EU, aligned with Ukraine, and wants Russia to kick rocks. Hes also talked about unfucking hungary's courts, media consolidation and electrion rules that the outgoing facist rigged.
balsoft@lemmy.ml · 0 pts · 113d
He's also extremely nationalist, anti-immigration, and his attitude to LGBT is silence (which is only marginally better than hatred)
EU is a trading bloc and fascists love money. More extreme ones hate others more than they love money, but it's not universal.
There's nothing stopping fascists from supporting Ukraine, there are plenty of nazis there too. It's not as bad as russian propaganda makes it out to be but it is a reason why some on the right/far-right support it.
This would be good overall. Whether he follows through with it or just re-fucks the institutions in his favor remains to be seen
Overall I'd say he's like a Hungarian Meloni - a fascist (or close to one) willing to cooperate with liberals to make money together.

He's against continuing Hungary's further path to a dictatorship without due process or real elections, which is the best Hungary can get at the moment.
HK65@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 113d
Can we stop the idpol a bit? He is also campaigning on wealth taxes, fighting back against oligarchs and corporations, anti-corruption, strong social safety nets paid by reclaimed wealth and so on.
What do you expect a politician to be if not nationalistic? He was running for national office. If anything, he supports international collaboration with pro-EU forces in the V4. He is not even staunchly anti-immigration, the whole thing with that was just pointing out hipocrisy in the government. Same with LGBT rights, in an ideal society it should just be normal and nobody should care, especially not the government.

he did say he liked orban's immigration policies, when an interviewer asked for 3 things magyar likes about orban. (when they asked orban the same, he couldn't say anything)

As a trans person? No, we can't. Fuck you
balsoft@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 113d
No. Combining pseudo-socialist economic policies with conservative social policies is literally national-socialism which you might know by some other names
I checked the full election platform and there's some OK stuff in there (wealth tax, increased pensions, social housing, women's rights as workers). The rest is liberal policies (e.g. nationalizing bankrupcy and debt foreclosure agencies) and tax cuts for lower and middle class. It is for sure better than Orban but overall it's not very progressive
Uhhh I want my politicians to support the international working class. I expect them to not be overtly nationalist at a minimum. Internationalism is a thing.
He said he liked Orban's draconian immigration policies and he cracked jokes (or insane slander, hard to tell) at immigrant's expense
Definitely not when the government discriminated and abused LGBT people for decades, propagandized society and stoked hatred against them. It needs to be dealt with and spoken about. We still live in a patriarchy and its victims need protection and support.
rhombus@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 113d
Without getting into the rest of it, that is not the case whatsoever. The Nazis weren’t even pseudo-socialist, they were definitely capitalist. There was still a capitalist class profiting off of the slavery and war, but only so long as they remained loyal to the party.
balsoft@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 113d
The nazis absolutely did use social-populist rhetoric and promises on their way to power, and even did implement some nominally "socialist" policies like nationalization of certain war-related industries, public works, price controls, and a large degree of planning. It was also combined with union busting, privatization of other industries, huge deficit spending with intent to reclaim it with war plunder, and other obviously capitalist/imperialist moves, so it wasn't real economic socialism of course. That said, Magyar's platform is definitely nowhere near economic socialism either, it's welfare capitalism at best.

Excuse me, what the fuck? No, Magyar is no fascist unless you're one of these guys who just make a joke out of this word.
He's a Christian democrat, not alt-right. Think CDU, not AFD.
HK65@sopuli.xyz · 10 pts · 113d
Sorry, but not really, the Christian Democrats were in the govt coalition.
He ran on wealth taxes and going after the rich as well as corporations. He's kind of a centrist populist, very much not like the CDU.

Not every country's politics is like the US. Please read up on Hungary in the past 2 years and you might get less cynical.
There is no "ratchet" in Hungary. It literally could not get worse save for going full-on Belarus. And the people, the party and even the electorate behind Magyar are people who mostly haven't been in politics yet. The "ratchet" liberal party has been kicked out of politics this election along with the government. Explicitly because they were the do-nothing party.
Tisza can't afford to be that.
wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 0 pts · 113d
It must be so exhausting being a tankie, always coming up with reasons why nothing is ever a good thing, no matter how severely they need to twist their logic, and smugly blaming it all on the liberals whom they call fascists while glossing over the actual fascists...
Couldn't be me...

Is he more or less fascist than Orban 16 years ago?
balsoft@lemmy.ml · 7 pts · 113d
Hard to say honestly. It feels about the same, Orban also started out as a pro-democracy and even somewhat liberal politician.

downvoters can only accept a binary state of opinion …
yes, his ex-wife is the ex judicial minister and is an orbanite.
but this does not necessarily make the allegations less credible.
also i can be glad that Orban is gone, but at the same time still be critical of his successor Magyar, this is not incompatible…

Would that make his policy positions about on-par with the Democratic leadership in the USA?
HK65@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 113d
Not really. The equivalent of Dem leadership in Hungary has been the DK, which was extremely successful in the past 16 years of destroying any hope of a third option.
Tisza is the "third party" way done right. His policy positions include both nationalistic stuff like stronger representation of the Hungarian diaspora and socialistic stuff like wealth taxes.
He just beat Hungarian Hillary out of parliament completely.
JaumeI@programming.dev · 3 pts · 114d
I don't know this case specifically, but usually USA Democrats are similar to Europe Right-far right, not center-right. Republicans are what we could say mad-right to most Europeans.
partial_accumen@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 114d
As bad as the Democratic leadership can be sometimes, I don't see them as bad as Le Pen or the AfD, which I'd both consider far-right. I also don't see the USA Democrats being cozy with Putin. Those positions would be where the USA Republicans are, and hence they are far-right.
Damage@feddit.it · 2 pts · 113d
Maybe using a one-dimensional scale to identify policy isn't all that adequate?
partial_accumen@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 113d
I don't disagree. I'd say a majority of policy positions should generally be the go-to definition. What, in your opinion, are all the policy positions of the Democratic leadership that would represent the majority of their policies to arrive at calling them far-right?
