I've seen a few articles written about it. One was basically explaining that in anonymous spaces like 4chan, being fluent in the "language" is a way to signal that you belong since you have no identity tied to your social status. As that language seeps into the mainstream, it becomes less valuable as a signal to the in group and therefore new words and phrases need to be created to keep the language as esoteric as possible. There was a lot of musing on whether these phrases getting picked up in more mainstream uses normalizes these groups, or whether it's more a form of mockery that takes away legitimacy.

An ostensibly female, blue-haired, feminist friend wrote her bachelor thesis about classifying reddit users in r/asmongold by language and the correlating amount of engagement in discourse in said community to see if she can form groups by classifying them by language and find out if she can form a relation between those groups and the topics (gaming, "politics", misogyny, racism, etc.) they talk about.
first of all, i’m sorry if i created the impression that all linguists were female (and the other attributes i mentioned). rather i was trying to say that an overwhelming majority of the people starting linguistics at my uni carried at least some of the attributes i mentioned. (a very unscientific observation over the last five years)

It is true that the humanities have a higher percentage than other fields. I just wanted to add that many female linguists that I know are also dialed into the manosphere/incel/4chan speak even though they are the target of this dehumanising language, kind of in a morbidly curious way lol. Many of my acquaintances are also organising politically, which probably adds to this. As for the results, I sadly haven't met her in a while, I'm sorry.
Ohh and I added the cis-male part to clarify that the information is just second hand.
I don't feel strongly positively or negatively about it, but if it's spoken with clear intent to diminish me, I like that person and their application of the phrase less.
Words are just words. It's how and why they're used that matters.

Also, for anyone wanting an indirect education on this language, go listen to the Behind the Bastards podcast on Clavicular, it does a great job explaining the infiltration of incel language (which is mostly what the meme is) into the lexicon and talking about Clavicular.
Worth a listen, not because we need to understand the words, but because we get to understand where they came from and the toxicity of incel groups.
