I can’t tell if this is real or satire

protist@retrofed.com · 112 pts · 146d (6 replies)

I thought surely it must be satire, but this was legitimately posted on his Facebook account. I have no words. I guess we're trying to bring back Byzantium now

MoonManKipper@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 146d

Thank you for checking so I didn’t have to

Jiral@lemmy.org · 7 pts · 146d (1 reply)

Have you thought of the Roman Empire already today?

5in1k@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 144d

Hadn’t until now. I almost forgot.

MintyFresh@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 145d

They'll have to re-record that song.

It'll go "Constantinople not Istanbul"

Doesn't really roll off the tongue though.

the_crotch@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 144d

Finally, my collection of byzantine coins will be worth something

tburkhol@lemmy.world · 47 pts · 146d

US's writers have gotten really lazy since season 240 or so. It's like they turned the whole show over to a Poe's Law bot. I keep hoping for something good...there's interesting fan fic, but they never seem to follow up.

slothrop@lemmy.ca · 12 pts · 146d

I did the dirty but couldn't find it. I need a deep cleanse now.

Nvermind@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 146d

Somehow it’s real… Edit (I had linked the actual post but deleted it to not drive traffic to that shit)

Gork@sopuli.xyz · 106 pts · 146d (14 replies)

Does he not realize that the Hagia Sophia is not under the control of the US in any way, shape, or form?

Jacob_Mandarin@lemmy.world · 51 pts · 146d (5 replies)

Well yeah. But since the war in iran is now totally and completely won. They need a new barbaric country to liberate.

SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org · 21 pts · 146d (4 replies)

So they are want to bomb Turkey next?

Railcar8095@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 146d

Not next, Cuba goes first.

marcos@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 146d

Netanyahu already said so.

Sirius006@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 146d

They can't : it's part of NATO so the US would get involved.

Wait...

thericofactor@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 146d

Oh, good luck with that. The Turks are famously well armed and very nationalistic.

GalacticSushi@piefed.blahaj.zone · 23 pts · 145d

Do you not realize that "consent" is a foreign concept to conservatives?

bcgm3@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 145d

6, maybe 7

InvalidName2@lemmy.zip · 50 pts · 146d (4 replies)

If I had to guess, I'm assuming this is coming from the seemingly common belief amongst the crowd of a certain political persuasion that Christians are the most persecuted people in the world ever, and that Muslims are trying to kill us all or convert us all to their religion?

SPRUNT@lemmy.world · 36 pts · 146d

and that Muslims are trying to kill us all or convert us all to their religion.

It's always projection with these motherfuckers.

RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 146d

They have weaponized their persecution complex.

0_o7@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 145d (1 reply)

Motherfucking abrahamic religious fucknuts who apparently worship the same god always infighting thinking they're the "better" religion.

God, if he's real, must be rolling his eyes and simultaneously facepalming so hard right now.

Jankatarch@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 144d

Global north always does this.

US bombs some country in middle east, the people there fight back as self-defense, US says they are fighting in name of religion, and then US commits war crimes there in name of "spreading civilization."

Just using same rhetoric used against native americans. And people can't progress during war so US uses that to justify occupation.

homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · 45 pts · 146d (3 replies)

Surely the good people of South Carolina will not elect this obvious incompetent cretin to the Senate.

bhamlin@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 145d

I mean, trade like for like...

baggachipz@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 145d

Which one are you talking about?

Zephorah@discuss.online · 2 pts · 139d

What percentage of the good people of SC even know what the Hagia Sophia is?

GirthBrooksPLO@lemmy.world · 37 pts · 145d

That's really what's on America's mind. The Hagia Sophia.

Lumidaub@feddit.org · 35 pts · 146d (8 replies)

Okay, ignoring that reading this has made me even stupider - I always assume there was SOME kind of thought process that lead to such statements (yeah yeah I know, haha politicians and thought processes ololollol) and I'm very interested in this one. What exactly happened there? Where did the connection between the Hagia Sophia and the office of senator for South Carolina come from? What is he free-associating?

plyth@feddit.org · 26 pts · 146d (5 replies)

Where did the connection between the Hagia Sophia and the office of senator for South Carolina come from?

He is a senator. The Roman empire continues.

Lumidaub@feddit.org · 12 pts · 146d (3 replies)

Even senators need some kind of prompt to produce their nonsense. Who told this guy the Hagia Sophia was in the circle of influence of the SC senator?

mushroommunk@lemmy.today · 11 pts · 146d (2 replies)

US politicians believe their constituents elect them to police the middle east. See everything in Iran, Iraq, their rabbid support for Israel, etc.

They truly believe that God granted them this power to spread his war on Muslims. That's why a SC sensor thinks he has control over Hagia Sophia.

Lumidaub@feddit.org · 10 pts · 146d (1 reply)

Okay, yes, that makes sense (as in, I can see where this is coming from, not as in, it's sensible). But a senator? Potus, sure, obviously. Possibly a governor even. A senator? This seems like a fundamental misunderstanding of the office itself.

MrKoyun@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 146d

It is. But you see, that doesn't matter.

infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 145d

It does not. The US is just doing very poor cosplay of a long-dead empire.

Maeve@kbin.earth · 9 pts · 146d

Religion masking fascism

Aaron@lemmy.nz · 3 pts · 145d

The only connection I could make that would make sense to someone like that is Türkiye is near Georgia and so is South Carolina, therefore it's in the US.. but I've learned you should never try to ascribe logic or reason in situations like this. There is none. It's almost like they use a random word generator in their attempts to manufacture the outrage of the day.

olafurp@lemmy.world · 35 pts · 146d (2 replies)

For those who don't know, the original Hagia Sophia was one of the most impressive construction speed-run of all time. Completed in just under 6 years with 4th 6th century tech. They botched it a bit so the roof fell but still very impressive.

Edit: 6th century tech, first church was made in 4th century, current structure with the speed run was started in 532 and finished in 537.

AnarchoEngineer@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 29 pts · 145d (1 reply)

What’s impressive is that it’s survived centuries of earthquakes without seriously falling apart

olafurp@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 145d

Yeah, they would have had a clean run if they had made the dome more curved. It was a bit flat and an earthquake took the dome down and destroyed the altar. Still very impressive and definitely been well maintained.

SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world · 33 pts · 146d (3 replies)

Muslims got Hagia Sophia and Christians got Alhambra and the Mosque of Cordoba. Bet he doesn’t want to return those.

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 144d (1 reply)

Ms lindsey probably thinks the HAGIA sophia was a christian church before.

SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 144d

It really was a Christian church before though. It was built as the Christian basilica of Constantinople.

Heliumfart@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 146d

Haha, exactly what I was thinking

Warl0k3@lemmy.world · 31 pts · 145d (5 replies)

Sean Hannity just renounced his Catholicism because of that little Trump/Pope spat.

Their “Christianity” is Messianic Trumpism.

Is he really that stupid? I mean, the intellectual demands in American politics have not been high in the last few decades, but this is a real low point.

Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 144d (1 reply)

Real low point so far..

Treczoks@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 144d

I'm not sure those kind of people know "low points" anymore. More likely "lowest point yet".

I've been there. Beautiful building with so much history. Definitely NOT located in South Carolina.

Aaron@lemmy.nz · 10 pts · 145d (1 reply)

Southern states breed a type of politician that is what Donald Trump is on a pettier and smaller scale - you could say they were the prototype. Try Ma Ferguson and Alfalfa Bill Murray for stupid fucks that made their way to Governor (Ma Ferguson is probably(?) the originator of “if English was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me”; Alfalfa Bill Murray almost started a Texas/Oklahoma war).

Sorta like how MTG, and Michelle Bachman before her started. National attention for saying stupid shit = avalanche of votes on name recognition in your stupid home state.

trashboypro@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 144d

I would love the US to do that just for the AKP voters in Turkey to see the fact that Erdoğan is the strongest soldier of the American and Israeli imperialism with their own eyes when he remakes Haghia Sophia into a church.

borderstolutenfolk@lemmy.wtf · 5 pts · 144d

Wasn't this a pagan site before christianity?

MrMcGasion@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 144d

As someone who lives in South Carolina, there is one small benefit to this guy being such a nutcase, He's distracting Lindsey and his PACs, we've gotten a couple fliers in the mail from Lindsey Graham affiliates calling out Mark Lynch's crazy antics (most specifically his calls to legalize cocaine). Haven't seen one ad attacking the leading Democrat, Annie Andrews. And sure, that will probably pick up after the primaries are over, but I do love watching Republicans waste money fighting each other.
