"You and what army?"
underscore_@sopuli.xyz · 7 pts · 79d
Maybe the would like the northern fleet docked <200k from the Finnish boarder at Severomorsk to get some action? And by action I mean likely involuntary submersion.
nymnympseudonym@piefed.social · 58 pts · 81d
He's right.
If Finland enters the war, Russia can look forward to 2x the drone strikes on its fossil fuels and 2x the rate of 200/400 cargo
CompactFlax@discuss.tchncs.de · 28 pts · 81d
Even if Finland isn’t ready to go with the drones, you know Ukraine is shipping hundreds to take advantage of new launch sites!
quick_snail@feddit.nl · -22 pts · 81d
Are you advocating for war crimes?
echodot@feddit.uk · 29 pts · 80d
Fuel refineries are legitimate military targets. You're getting confused between fuel refineries and schools, Russia often makes that mistake. They look so similar.

From your linked article:
Pretty much every nation in war commits war crimes. I would seriously struggle to find a country or entity that didn't... People don't just have the soldiers line up nicely and shoot at each other until one side surrenders.
Pretty rarely do countries get investigated or convicted for war crimes... The worst like the US and Israel just ignore it either way.
murmelade@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 79d
Exactly, other guy was implying only one side does that.
quick_snail@feddit.nl · -3 pts · 80d
Bombing civilian infrastructure is a war crime.
Cethin@lemmy.zip · 9 pts · 79d
Lol.
Bridges also are, right? And civilian factories producing electronics, that the military happens to use, right? What is allowed to be targeted?
Maybe the Russian people should do something to ensure they stop being attacked. It's all on them, not the defenders. Meanwhile, Russia is striking apartment buildings.
quick_snail@feddit.nl · -1 pts · 79d
Military bases are allowed to be targeted.
Cethin@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 79d
That's all? You aren't allowed to attack logistics? Logistics are how you wage war. There has literally never been a war ever that didn't target logistics. You're saying the defenders should be restricted to only targeting military bases, while the invader is attacking civilian housing?
SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 80d
So Truman went to jail?
quick_snail@feddit.nl · 3 pts · 80d
Every US president since WW1 is a war criminal.
Usually powerful criminals don't get convicted
echodot@feddit.uk · 2 pts · 79d
Clean civilians as a war crime. I'm not sure how many civilians on the regular take a wander through an oil refinery.
quick_snail@feddit.nl · 0 pts · 79d
Killing civilians is another war crime. There's a lot: bombing civilian infrastructure, killing civilians, collective punishment, moving civilians into militarily occupied lands, killing PoWs, etc
frog@feddit.uk · 44 pts · 81d
Um... did this guy forget Finland is part of the EU? Lol
sik0fewl@piefed.ca · 24 pts · 81d
NATO, too.
hunnybubny@discuss.tchncs.de · 7 pts · 80d
Russia is at war with NATO since Putin took over. At least propaganda wise. Why do you think their media ghouls keep hitting that "nuke it" red button at the first queue of Europe.
It is the reason tankies keep slinging same narrative.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 0 pts · 79d
putins also funding all the far right governments too to make sure nato cant form a cohesive unit in the future, if they get into power.
massive_bereavement@fedia.io · 17 pts · 81d
Based on how the last war went, I don't think Finland needs any help.

Yeah... definitely what Russia needs now is to start Winter War part two.
dontbelievethis@sh.itjust.works · 18 pts · 81d
Isn't now the perfekt time to invade Russia?
saltesc@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 81d
Too warm for the Finns. Wait 'til next winter.
someguy3@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 81d
Shortstack@reddthat.com · 35 pts · 81d
Finland has been preparing for a Russian invasion since the end of the last world war, joining the EU just made the relationship with their European neighbors official
someguy3@lemmy.world · 14 pts · 81d
Both the USSR and Finland figured the fight would be between the great powers and the USSR. The USSR wanted Finland to be neutral to close off that route of invasion, and Finland wanted to be neutral and sit out any war.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finno-Soviet_Treaty_of_1948
But that doesn't hold in today's world where Russia is little more that a terrorist country that wants bits of land, so they joined NATO.
Triumph@fedia.io · 7 pts · 81d
Air power / missile technology is way beyond what it was in 1948, too. Attacking "from Finland" might be convenient, but it is not at all necessary.
someguy3@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 81d
Neutral countries usually means a no fly zone, and that probably goes for low flying missiles too.
hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -1 pts · 81d
Finland is ready for the invasion - assuming Russia doesn't have any technology developed since 1940
Ioughttamow@fedia.io · 7 pts · 81d
Russia already blew their load and couldn’t defeat Ukraine. Finland bloodied Russia when it was a real world power. I guess they have nukes, but that’s in reality a losing move. The paper tiger has crumpled. That’s what a kleptocracy gets you, weakness
echodot@feddit.uk · 4 pts · 80d
They've invented lots of technologies since the 1940s unfortunately for Russia they then burnt it all in the first 6 months of the war so now they're back to Soviet era tanks.
Meanwhile everybody else's stock by all is still at 100%.
China is also unlikely to be too supportive in that area, they would like Russia to win against the West, but they also know that's not going to happen without China joining the war (Russian air force essentially no longer exists and their navy has been effectively neutralised), and they don't want to do that. So second best option is to let Russia collapse and then take a bit of territory from themselves.

Finland: Go on then.
Russia: Help, comrade, I went up fjord and am stuck in snow.
Finland: Fuck off

They always send the second guy out in Summer
wizzor@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 79d
I mean, Finland is so nice in the summer you gotta let people take their month off then rather than in winter.
P1k1e@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 79d
Lol my buddy went back to finland to serve for a few years and he said summer was the swampiest shit he's ever seen. He certainly had a good time tho
SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 80d
Second country you will lose to?
DaTingGoBrrr@lemmy.ml · 6 pts · 80d
Watch Putin attack Finland to trigger NATO just because he can. He already knows he's finished. I don't think the Russian people or the oligarchs are very happy with him.
SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 80d
no one liked Stalin either but they were terrified of him.
echodot@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 80d
Whereas of course he was their favourite person before the war.
DaTingGoBrrr@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 79d
They didn't mind him at least and let him run the country the way he wanted. He needs support from Russians to continue existing as their leader.
echodot@feddit.uk · 3 pts · 79d
He's a dictator. They can't exactly deselect him.
DaTingGoBrrr@lemmy.ml · 2 pts · 79d
Yeah sure, but he's not immortal or untouchable. Dictators can and has been removed from power previously.
echodot@feddit.uk · 1 pts · 79d
The smart one sure the dumb ones try and hang on to power longer than it's possible and then end up having to be killed in order to get rid of them.
I have a feeling that Putin is too much of a control freak whoever just surrender power on his own. Nothing short of a military coup will deseat him
Zephyr@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 79d
They're in a bad position long-term. I get him trying to bring back some Soviet glory but didn't work out the way they expected. Now the only sliver of hope they have is snagging up those natural gas fields in Eastern Ukraine.
