I had a run in in the drive thru a couple years back. I pulled into one of the two lanes at McD, and another car went through the second lane. I wait my turn, and then try to pull forward, but the person in the other car was riding up on the bumper of the person ahead of them, like, clearly intentionally making sure there was no room for me to take my turn.

So I roll down my window and call out "Hey, they're gonna get our orders mixed up" and before I'd even finished my sentence the driver GOES BALLISTIC on me. Just screaming "oh my God, really? Really?? Over a burger? Really?? Really? Really??" And I just rolled my window back up. The person drove forward just far enough to keep me from moving ahead, but not far enough to get to the first window to pay. They waited. Waited until the line cleared up. Then they gunned it past the pay window and straight to the food window.

I pulled up to the pay window, rolled mine down and loudly declared "Yeah, could I get my receipt too? I think this person ahead of my is trying to take my food!"

At which point the driver ahead of me peeled out of the drive thru without having received any food.

Window person said that such a tactic had been done a few other times that month by other people.

I was driving back from Atlanta a few years ago and stopped into a chicfila drivethru to grab some lunch on the go. I didn't realize how backed up they were until i was already stuck in line and had no way to get out. There were 2 parking lot entrances merging into 1 drive-thru lane, the guy in front of me let a car from the other lane go in, then he went, so I figured the understanding was zipper merging and just taking basic turns so I let the other car go, then I went. When I got to the person to take me order she said "The guy in front of you has already paid for your meal for letting them go in front of you."

When basic courtesy is so rare it needs to be rewarded.

Same. Every day was like a lengthy masterclass in infinite fresh flavors of assholery and Karen-hood. As soon as you think you've plumbed the shadowy depths of the human condition, the floor comes out from under you. Then, all of a sudden, you're gazing straight into the maw of a clapped out Chevy Trailblazer where there used to be a drive thru window, and the driver is now prancing around nude, ranting about dipping sauces and firing a 12-gauge into the ceiling tiles.

The real mystery is why you're getting downvotes.

Eheran@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 41d (1 reply)

I assume people do not like what I say to some topics and downvote me everywhere regardless of what I say. I am fairly sure of this since some replies to me can even be as simple as "you are correct" and have 20 upvotes while I am at 4 or something. Odd but who cares at the end of the day.

In any case, if you have a car and go to these places and this happens once(!), you can clearly afford it.

How would the person behind have already ordered if they're behind?

Why would the cashier not check with the person behind that they want someone else to pay?

The whole thing sounds implausible and ragebait.

hereiamagain@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 41d (1 reply)

This literally happens all the time.. Have you been through a drive through?

You order first, then at the first window you pay, then at the second window you pick up what you ordered. So you can pay for the car behind you, people do it, sometimes they get a long chain of people doing it, all paying for the car behind them.

Personally I think the long chain is dumb, and I won't participate if I'm in the middle. If nobody ends it then nobody benefits from it. Might as well be me, I'm not rich.

However.. you are right, I don't think it would be easy to take the food of the car behind you, even if you paid for it. I've never worked in fast food but I'm sure there's checks in place to make sure the right car gets the food, so you'd have to explain yourself. I imagine?

Edit: reminded me of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATjL9CmwkCo

axx@slrpnk.net · -1 pts · 41d

I have, but not in a long time.

I didn't know payment chains were a thing. Makes little sense to me, the Tim Robinson sketch kind of shows the gist of why, but why not.

Doom@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 41d

You are assuming that A) drive thru workers give a fuck & B) drive thru workers give a fuck.

"I want to pay for the car behind me" THEM: "ok"
"I need to grab both these orders." THEM: "ok"

They aren't paid enough to care. At worst the second car had to wait for her food to be remade and got it for free - the horror.

BigDanishGuy@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 41d

Drive through consists of five distinct locations:

  1. Ordering at a speaker stand.
  2. Paying at the first window (which is not where you ordered)
  3. Waiting at the second window to get told to go to the third window.
  4. Being told to move out of the line, and park next to it, because an order of a royale with cheese, a medium fries with mayo, and a medium sprite is too complex of an order to process fast.
  5. Going down the highway, crying because nobody remembers pulp fiction, and eating your bag of crap.
rekabis@lemmy.ca · -4 pts · 42d (10 replies)

McDonald’s doesn’t provide receipts at the first window, they provide them at the second along with your food.

They don’t even have a receipt printer at the first window.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 5 pts · 41d

I've definitely gotten receipts from either window I'm pretty sure. Hell sometimes you pay and receive at the same window and one window isn't even being used.

RebekahWSD@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 42d (7 replies)

The McDonalds near my house works as I've written. I hand them a card, they ask if I want a receipt, they hand me back my card and the receipt.

Trail@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 42d (6 replies)

You physically give them your card?!

RebekahWSD@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 42d (4 replies)

Yes. It's how it works with most restaurants here as well. Hand it to them, they leave and return with the thing to sign and the card. Or in the case of drive throughs, the card and the receipt.

boonhet@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 41d (3 replies)

It's weird to hear for a lot of us Europeans because most people here don't use credit cards (so you're out of your own money if fraud happens) and also all cards have been chip and pin for a few decades now, we don't do this signing thing

RebekahWSD@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 41d

Most cards here have the chip, I think. You mean how to put the card next to a reader and it goes beep, yeah? Those are available, but for some reason restaurants and drive through food places just...don't do that? The only place I think that uses the tap part is something like Red Robin, a fast casual burger place. They have machines on the table you can tap. But for the most part you hand the card and the check/slip to the server, they disappear, return with a thing to sign and your card. But from my understanding it's pretty easy to do chargebacks on the card or the like if someone were to charge extra or the like. But part of the reason for handing you something to sign is because you also can put the tip on there, being in the USA.

VitoRobles@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 42d

Yes? One of the biggest benefits of a credit card is the charge back option for fraud. (Not pro credit card... Just pointing out this feature)

blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 41d

The receipt printer is hooked up to the computer with the card swiper, which would be at the first window, in the case of my location.

Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 42d (2 replies)

I'd almost put money on the attendant asked the guy to wait a moment, then this lady honked because she had to wait in line for an extra 14.7 seconds...but when it was her turn to order she stared at the menu for 2 minutes, then ordered for more people who can fit into her car.

The same type of person at the grocery store who will complain yOuRe TaKiNg ToO lOnG if someone is looking at something she wants, but then will park her cart in the middle of the aisle and stand there for 4 straight minutes.

RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 42d (1 reply)

I haven't used a drive through in decades. How is one able to pay for the next person's food?

bstix@feddit.dk · 2 pts · 41d (3 replies)

You just ask. It's an American thing to do. They think it's funny to do. Like tipping and charity and other things where you can pay for feeling good about yourself.

What happens is that the next car also pays forward and so on until the chain breaks. It makes the news every once in a while when they manage to keep it up for an entire day.

k0e3@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 41d (2 replies)

Sorry, maybe I'm just sunbeat and can't think straight—or just an idiot—because I still don't get it.

This is what I'm picturing. Blue car orders as the pink car waits (and honks like a jerk) in fig. 1, right? Then the blue car drives up to the pick-up window to pay for and get their food in fig 2, at which point the pink car can make their order.

At which point between 1. and 2. does the blue car have the opportunity to pay for pink car's food, get the receipt, and take their order? Did the blue car just wait at the pick-up window until pink made the order? If that's the case, wouldn't the staff know that that's not their order?

bstix@feddit.dk · 4 pts · 41d

There are usually more steps: Order, wait, pay, wait, get food.

When you're at pay, they already have the bill for the next car who is in wait.

Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 40d

Add in a long distance between order and pay (or a slow blue driver).

MimicJar@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 41d

Some drive thru have two windows, one where you pay and one where you pickup. So you just tell the pay window that you have your car and the car behind you.

Nowadays most places either only have one window and make one person do both jobs, also they don't have to pay as many people. The overall service is slower, but no one seems to care enough.

Sometimes you can even find older restaurants that have two windows and one is just permanently closed.

Also Starbucks had (still has?) a trend where you pay for the car behind you as a sort of pay it forward thing. Although in that scenario you probably can't take someone else's food.

panda_abyss@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 42d (4 replies)

That’s fine, but there are people don’t think about it until they get to the front, even inside.

And for the record I think drive through should be abolished. They’re a waste of space.

jaybone@lemmy.zip · 3 pts · 42d (3 replies)

Often it’s actually quicker just to go inside.

5too@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 42d (2 replies)

When I was working fast food, during rush they prioritized the drive-thru orders over the indoor customers. Drive time was tracked and needed minimized, people waiting inside were presumably expected to be more patient.

It's been a few decades, but I still see cars slide through a lot faster than our orders when we go in.

panda_abyss@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 42d (1 reply)

Yeah, but only a couple cars can have orders placed at most, so your wait time is the sum of all cars in front of you.

That’s changed now a bit, there are multi lines and they ask you to pull over and wait. But still.

5too@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 41d

It varies by restaurant, but I've had my family waiting in fast food restaurants, order already placed, for 15-20 minutes while I'm seeing cars entering the parking lot and leaving within four minutes or so. And it's not like they forgot us (had that too), usually others were already there and also had to wait a while.

It's not everywhere, but Ive seen it multiple times with multiple chains. Online pickups don't seem to have it as bad, but drive times are absolutely prioritized over indoor wait times

TheTechnician27@lemmy.world · 36 pts · 42d

But also you should have an idea what you want before you go through the drive through.

They have a menu for a reason. You don't get to act entitled to other people's ability to look at a menu at the restaurant to decide what they want – nor do you forfeit yours – just because you decided not to leave your stupid car to get your food. "Oh, gee, I'm wasting gas waiting for them to order." Then go inside or order ahead.

FatVegan@leminal.space · 4 pts · 42d (2 replies)

Bougie_Birdie@piefed.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 42d

You could give the extra food to someone who needs it and wasn't being a hugely entitled bitch.

The reason would be that the rudely impatient person has to wait in line again. Unfortunately the punishment will be lost on them, and they'll take it out on the employees that don't get paid a living wage.

Saapas@piefed.zip · 0 pts · 42d (2 replies)

Now that I think about it, you wouldn't even have to explain much since they'd most likely know you told them you'll pay for her order

village604@adultswim.fan · 12 pts · 42d (1 reply)

It's still an additional delay for someone already upset that OP was taking too long to order.

I think it's the perfect consequence for being an ass in the drive through.

Saapas@piefed.zip · 0 pts · 42d

It just seems like you'd be paying for two meals and slowing yourself down even further without much payoff, since the other person can quickly resolve the situation anyway. Might as well just slowed down ordering in the first place, that way you wouldn't have had to pay for a second order

Entertainmeonly@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 11 pts · 42d (3 replies)

And hers? They took both... making her need to order all over again after being told the person in front paid. So, she likely got excited for free food then was even more pissed when said food was neither free nor available at the second window...

Saapas@piefed.zip · 1 pts · 42d (2 replies)

I mean it wasted a bit of time on both side but she could probably just order at the receiving window, since the workers would know the situation already

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 42d (1 reply)

Sounded like she was in more of a rush than he was and even if it did have an easy solution, the type that gets pissed off at a slight delay from a person being ahead of them in a drive thru is likely going to get pissed off every time she thinks of it.

And even if the workers understood what was happening, I'd say it was a coin toss whether they prepared to help her vs just wanted to enjoy the guy's trolling.

Though there's a decent chance that the person on cash and the person handing out the food didn't stop to talk to each other to figure out what was going on and that it took more minutes just to understand what was happening when she got to the front of the line.

Saapas@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 42d

Pacattack57@lemmy.world · 18 pts · 42d (9 replies)

No that’s just basic context clues. He said the lady honked at him so it can be inferred that he is in the drive thru.

EditsHisComments@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 42d

Also in the US, so many fast-food places have actively dismantled large parts of their dining areas since the Pandemic so they can cut cost and staff fewer people. The food is also almost as expensive as many restaurants now, so literally the only appeal to these places anymore is that they're faster.

This isn't because we're unfortunately car-centric, it's because toxic corporations have made eating inside mostly inconvenient

merc@sh.itjust.works · -7 pts · 42d (7 replies)

Yes, you have to context switch once that part comes in after the initial context was "I was just at McDonalds".

Jyek@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 42d (6 replies)

So you're upset that the bit that gives you context doesn't explicitly say "in the drive through"? Do you read at a second grade level?

merc@sh.itjust.works · -5 pts · 42d (5 replies)

Are you American?

Jyek@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 42d (4 replies)

Yep. And I'm sure you have some implications about my intelligence as a result of being an American but let me just go ahead and jump right out there and tell you, I'm not the one complaining about how hard it is to read plain english.

merc@sh.itjust.works · -2 pts · 42d (3 replies)

I'm not saying it's hard to read plain English. I'm saying that when an American says "I was at McDonalds" apparently he means "I was in the McDonalds Drive Thru" because Americans are car-brained.

Jyek@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 41d

What I'm telling you, in plain english, which you seem to be having trouble understanding even now, is that reading at a second grade level is when you start to learn about context clues in writing like someone honking at you in line at a fastfood restaurant, is the indicator that you are in the drive thru. It isn't implied by being in line at the fast food place. It's implied by the additional context of being honked at.

Soulg@ani.social · 6 pts · 42d (3 replies)

Do you carry around an air horn to honk it at people in restaurants?

merc@sh.itjust.works · -4 pts · 42d (2 replies)
