Solid move. If your office really just needs a word processor, email, a spreadsheet editor, etc, then Linux is going to make a ton of sense financially.
Paraphrasing from the video: it’s a small town (2k people) in the Loire region.
They claim that the transition to Linux wasn’t as hard as anticipated, meaning it wasn’t as hard to teach town officials to use it as they thought. Users are happy to see their machines run faster on Linux than on bloated Windows
They are looking forward to saving money on SW but also on equipment since they don’t have to buy new machines for the Windows 11 planned obsolescence madness.
However, the main reason the town switched was for privacy. They handle confidential info and are betting on Linux track record as less of a target of ransomware and other exploits, hopefully protecting their citizens data better.
10/10, who ever the mayor or city manager is, I applaud their clear mindedness and courage to make this transition. Hopefully, seeing the benefits, more towns will follow suite.
Unfortunately they have, especially I am aware of some in Germany, but they gave up due to the difficulties involved as Linux did not turn out to be as easy to use as people hoped a decade ago.
The German thing was quite suspicious though, the mayor of the city changed, Microsoft announced that they were building a new center of excellence or something in the town and suddenly Linux was too hard...
What in the AI clickbait bot spam hell is going on here?
A bunch of randomly different channels, all with similar, sometimes the same, thumbnail, and suspiciously similar timestamps. The videos are like some dude (who I suspect is not a real person) in portrait talking like he’s reporting but it’s all generated painted looking backgrounds of stock photos.
The video says they are handling “banking info, health data and personal records”
It is a government agency: the town hall of a small town of 2,000 people.
What are they replacing office with? I've been using Office Libre but it's buggy AF. I can't use sheets on a second monitor because it freezes until I move it back the main monitor for example.
I use libre office on a second monitor and its fine. That honestly does not sound like a problem with software. It should not care how the os displays it to hardware endpoints.
Yeah so everything else works fine on it. I mean you should be able to exculsively use the second monitor without your laptop screen. Like software does determine all sorts of aspects of how it displays to an os but the os is deciding on display sources. software does not dictate that.
Yeah this is hard to explain but in my view you have what appears to be an empty reply and because of it, it looks like moonlights reply is yours. Ill try and paste it here.
yeah it could be the font. I think because there is nothing in it and you have the icon while moonlights has no icon it just sorta seems to merge together. Anyway that was why I was confused. It looked like you suggested something to yourself.
No, I don't think so. But it's based on only office which does have a desktop offline client version without the need for hosting a backend server. Havent researched enough to say for sure. Just read through a few news articles and the GitHub page (the cognitive dissonance with this project - great idea, yet host om MS service and uses MS docx formats...).
There are indeed! And I grew up in Detroit, so I loved going across the river to Windsor and making trips up to Toronto.
Also, my original comment was meant to be a self-deprecating joke. It just seems like simply mentioning that you're American, or even just saying "American" at all, immediately starts getting you downvoted here on Lemmy, so...

And now the pendulum has swung back around.

Sounds exactly like Microsoft to not leave their product to compete on even terms, and instead use coercion tactics to "win".

Anyone else got no audio on the clip? Be cool if there were subtitles.

Went looking for the clip, that was a mistake.
