They say it's a cup, yet it is clearly participated on a field. And that field is plainly not big enough to house the whole world.

Lies through and through.

areakode@riskeratspizza.com · 8 pts · 33d (3 replies)

At least Trump won the game! Spain on the other hand... Terrible people. Terrible. Rapists and murderers. But they are winners when they get to stand in the man's presence. /s

Does that mean we all... lost the game?

I have a burning hatred for football and football hooliganism.

Hazel@piefed.blahaj.zone · 14 pts · 33d

Ugh, especially the hooliganism. People are way too mild on the hateful competitivism it breeds in fans and the millions it costs for demolishing our cities.

AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 33d (5 replies)

I have a "I don't give a shit" about football but a love for hoolaganism

A_Chilean_Cyborg@feddit.cl · 4 pts · 33d (4 replies)

well, pay to fix all the destruction then.

and made me arrive on time each time football hooligans take the street and my bus has to be diverted.

AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 32d (3 replies)

The hoolaganism I enjoy does not involve destruction of public property or traffic disruption to be clear

A_Chilean_Cyborg@feddit.cl · 2 pts · 32d (2 replies)

then you just don't know what hooliganism is.

AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 31d (1 reply)

A hooligan is a violent or rowdy person who engages in disruptive behavior, vandalism, or brawling in public places

Say for example, destroying a flock camera, or illegal Street art

A_Chilean_Cyborg@feddit.cl · 1 pts · 31d

Hooligans do it for the sake of destroying, because it feels good for them.

they're nit doing it for a better world like the flock camera ppl

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 33d

World Cup 2030 will be here before we know it. Where are you guys watching? Is Spain the favorite? Will Cabo Verde make another deep run? Let's hear those theories!!!

Fizz@lemmy.nz · 28 pts · 33d (3 replies)

I dont watch it but I did appreciate seeing so many people happy and enjoying something. I think the world needed that little break. Anyway back to regular programming, millions dying in Ukraine and war in the middle east pushing us closer to economic depression.

Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 0 pts · 32d (2 replies)

Are you sure about that?

Think about it: only the people of a single one of all participant countries will end up happy (because their team won it) whilst everybody else will end up unhappy (because their team lost).

Granted, there are a few cases of a bit of happiness, like for the people of Cape Verde, without actually winning it but following unexpected very good positions, but those are a minority and tend towards smaller countries (which usually don't have enough population to have enough World-class players even if they're football-crazy, hence why any good result is a surprise).

I would say that logically, all in all at the end of it big single sport world cups like this generally end up with far more people unhappy because of it than the people which are happy.

Fizz@lemmy.nz · 3 pts · 32d

While the games are playing out there is happiness and excitement and celebration and sure when your team loses it can be sad but its just a game and there are worse things to be sad about. Its nice to feel sad about a game and not im sad because the world is falling apart.

For most people the world cup is not that serious and even for the ultras its more excitement than unhappiness. Think about the world cup as the total journey and not just the end result.

AliOski@feddit.nl · 2 pts · 32d

Yes. I might be disappointed The Netherlands didn't at least beat Morocco, before succumbing to France, but that doesn't mean the World Cup made me sad. It was incredibly entertaining, many unforgettable moments, beautiful goals. I'll never forget some of these moments.

A competition only makes you sad if you are a sore loser.

Eternal192@anarchist.nexus · 23 pts · 33d (8 replies)

AliOski@feddit.nl · 0 pts · 32d (2 replies)

If it were so easy, why don't you do it?

At the end of the day, it's entertainment, just like your comedy show, horror book or favorite song. Might not be your taste, but complaining about what they earn is really dishonest. Are you complaining about the actors in your favorite movie because they earn substantially more than you?

Eternal192@anarchist.nexus · 0 pts · 32d (1 reply)

So you think catering is easy? Carpentry? Firefighting? Yes i'm going to complain about what they earn, it's overrated bullshit and causes nothing but problems, traffic jams, huge amounts of garbage, damage to property from psychopathic fans, assaults, murder.

AliOski@feddit.nl · 0 pts · 32d

Nice that you ignored about 90% of my comment.

I never said the jobs you mentioned are easy, that's why you dont see me complaining about them earning too much.

You seem to think sport at such a high level is easy.

AlteredEgo@lemmy.ml · 0 pts · 33d (1 reply)

I always hated football too!

Then I played a football video game (PES). I like it a lot more now!

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 33d

melsaskca@lemmy.ca · 21 pts · 33d

gramie@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 32d

My mistake was only watching the final game live. Turned out to be a real snoozefest, with very, very few even mildly exciting moments.

How bad was it? Spain had 12 shots on net. Argentina had 0. Zero.

I think that any other game in the tournament would have been better to watch.

nullspace@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 33d (1 reply)

To be honest I'm a little sad to see it go because this has been the most I've seen other Americans take an interest in soccer, expanding their horizons beyond their own border a bit, and the banter between countries was fun in a way the Olympic medal farming doesn't quite capture.

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 33d

Bunch of millionaires rolling around once they get bumped, acting like they broke their leg in half. Run by a corrupt organization that ignores human rights and puts up ads on every flat surface in the world.

I also think it's a dumb sport but that's beside the point.

AliOski@feddit.nl · 1 pts · 32d

Bunch of millionaires rolling around once they get bumped, acting like they broke their leg in half.

Prevents referee from ignoring fouls and thus prevents dirty aggressive play. Does it matter to you that the actors in your favorite movie earn a lot? Or do you bitch about that too? Those sportsmen are essentially entertainers.

[...] and puts up ads on every flat surface in the world.

Well, that's how the football industry increases the demand of their entertainment. Byproduct is that it makes the sport popular, and sport is healthy, so it's good that it becomes popular.

Then English Hatsune played Argentina and lost. Then Argentinian Hatsune played Spain and lost. Now Spanish Hatsune Miku is the ultimate winner.

And how The Netherlands got knocked out pretty early.

Tollana1234567@lemmy.today · 9 pts · 33d

Blubber28@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 33d

Same. I'm grateful our national team got knocked out pretty quickly. I was not looking forward to all the partying and noise in the streets if they'd won. Now I can just get on with my day without all the hassle :)

ivanafterall@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 33d (2 replies)

I enjoyed dabbling, but in the future, if they roll around and hold their foot/ankle in pain, they shouldn't get to use that foot/ankle for the rest of the game.

You're clearly very injured and we insist you care for yourself.

HerbGrower@slrpnk.net · 9 pts · 33d

Depends tbh, there are injuries you can get which hurt a lot for a few seconds but you are quickly fine enough to carry on after. Fallen off a bike before and it really fucking hurts. Then a few minutes later cycling along again and it only hurts a little bit.

AliOski@feddit.nl · 2 pts · 32d

Fouls shouldn't be allowed just because they didn't cause any pain. Will only result in more aggressive play. Rather they roll a few times in order to keep the game clean and pretty.

Athletes with moral integrity need to publicly declare that they won't play for authoritarians.

AliOski@feddit.nl · 0 pts · 32d

Not liking something like this isn't a brag... it's just one less thing you can enjoy in life. One less thing you can watch. One less thing you can talk about. Etc...

The entire world partied for a month and you're over here thinking you're better because you were too cool to join in on the fun

Nobody likes that guy that tells himself he was, "too cool" to go to the party

0x0@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 32d (5 replies)

The entire world partied for a month

A whole lot of the world doesn't give two shits about soccer... especially FIFA's, for obvious reasons you seem to be willfully ignorant of.

VelvetPinkOtter123@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 30d (4 replies)

61% of the worlds population watched at least one World Cup game this year.

If you had sat down and watched even a single game, at that point in time, people all over the world, lots of them, were watching that same game with you. They were cheering with you. They danced in the streets, threw parties, and just generally celebrated with you. Literally a global celebration that you were invited too

It's such a big deal that, in the past, countries have literally ended wars with each other in order to participate

Being the weird-o kid that pretends like he's too cool to go that party because "AcTuAlLy ThErE's CoRrUpTiOn" is not nearly as cool as you think it is

0x0@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 28d (3 replies)

Only for morons who think it's cool to support corruption.

VelvetPinkOtter123@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 27d (2 replies)

This has that big, "social incel" energy. Most of us went to a giant party and had the time of our lives. We drank, we danced, we cheered, we laughed, we got laid. It was great! But not you. You think you're super cool because you didn't go that party because, "AcTuAlLy PlAsTiC cUpS aRe BaD fOr ThE eNvIrOnMeNt".

That's just lame. Missing out on big fun events doesn't make you cool... you're just fucking up your own life. This is it, this is all you get. Don't spend it watching from the sidelines

I'll just copy and past something I said to somebody to somebody else

I don’t really use sites like this… when I was younger different forums on different sites was still a thing

I kind of out-grew that and focused on my real-world life. Got a woman, had kids, climbed the corporate ladder, etc… I get my news from RSS feeds and I spend my days actually going places and doing things. I’m still friends with people I met in elementary school. My kids have activities, I befriended other parents, etc…

But when the World Cup rolled around, this time, I’m high enough up the corporate ladder that not only do I get to work from home but I don’t really have scheduled work hours any more. I have tasks that need to be done but when I do them is up to me and if my board items are clear I don’t have anything to do. So this year I thought I’d watch the games and post about them on reddit… but that turned out to be a shit-show. Turns out reddit is a terrible place

So some quick research said, ā€œtry Lemmyā€

I like that Lemmy is smaller, reminds me more of the forum days… but the people here don’t seem any different than the people on reddit; there’s just less of them

Nobody seems happy. In fact, they seem to get joy out making everything out to be as bad as it can possible be.

I just looked it up: 61% of the world watched at least one world cup game and at any give time around half the worlds population was watching. That’s fucking awesome that we do this. Half the world was cheering with me, dancing with me, partying with me… countries have ended wars in the past to participate… and the internet is full of people who think that sucks. Not just think it sucks, but think it’s cool to think it sucks.

My advice to anyone who sees this, just quit social media. That’s not new information, you hear it all the time… it’s even starting to be banned for children it’s so bad… but seriously. Give it up. This is no way to live. A past-time where this kind of constant negativity is being thrown in your face is no way to live.

0x0@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 27d (1 reply)

Seems like you're the one with a problem: the obsession of watching a bunch of millionaires kicking a ball. It's your money, spend it where you want to.

There is life besides soccer though and there's a lot of stuff you can do to have fun, both alone and with your friends. One of us knows this.

Bye now.

VelvetPinkOtter123@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 25d

It's not that everyone doesn't enjoy the same things I do, it's the way they don't enjoy it

I don't know what you like to do for fun but lets pretend it's, "Play video games"

A sane way to react to someone enjoying something you don't is:

"that's cool. I'm not super into video games, but I understand why other people would like them. To each their own"

But that's not what happened. What happened was:

"I guess playing games is cool if you're an idiot that likes supporting billionaire tech CEOs who kill the environment with plastic trinkets for nerds who have an obsession with watching millionaires push buttons on the internet. There is life besides video games and there's a lot of stuff you can do to have fun both alone and with your friends. It's a shame you don't understand this. "

That kind of response doesn't make you as cool as you think it does

My hunch is that this site is full of literal children. The vast majority of you are maybe 16 years old. If you're older, it's worse than I thought because it's embarrassing to be a grown adult who still talks like that. If the internet is encouraging you to think it makes you cool to hate stuff, get off the internet. It's bad for you. Hating shit isn't cool, enjoying life is.

I'm happy people all over the world play video games. Yeah, there are some downsides... but I think it's neat you can play a game tonight with somebody in another country and the two of you can have fun together; and if lots of people can come together for a big event like e3 or GDQ, great! I don't need to engage in it myself to see how awesome that is
