lemmy is federated. this means two people on two different instances can talk to each other as if they were on the same instance.
multiple instances have websites they administer. these admins can install custom user interfaces to make it look/feel different from other instances. one of those custom interfaces is "tesseract".
the lead developer for tesseract had a file obfuscated and hidden that has a list of communities, instances, and more importantly users. this list would hide/remove content from these communities, instances, and users based entirely on the whims of the lead developer. this means if you were reading my comment from one of these instances that uses tesseract, you wouldn't see my comment because I am on the list.
the developer in question is @ptz@dubvee.org you can direct any questions to them about it.
@ptz@dubvee.org i am a socialist that hate rich people and condemn your daddy Trump, Epstein and all the crew for raping childrens, i already said fuck the rich? Fuck Israel too and Russia
And centrists don't exist, Mr enlightened
TL;DR: add me on that shitty list i don't want your users to see my comments and posts
Do y'all think it will work? Do i have to be more reactionary and maybe add a Kirk meme too?
To add to what others are saying, your instance does not support Tesseract anyway, though if you read your instance sidebar text it points to Photon & Alexandrite frontends as options if you wanted to change the way that Lemmy looks to you (and if you use a browser rather than 3rd-party app).
In short: front end (like, page design) dev added a line in code that would call home for a list of people and instances dev didn't like so they won't appear on the front end to users. Badically a unwanted blacklist of users. Many got there for one reason or another. Some have no clue why.
Imagine upsetting someone so much they feel the need to write a rule to generically match your name and all names that remind them of you. Sounds like a great love story. Enemies to lovers.
My guess is when they have two in the list that match one regex they shorten the list by making a regex block.
So for some users I'll bet it is to take care of things like
IIIlll vs lllIII showing up and realizing that's regexa Le and hey let's just get any and all lengths of alternating Is and ls.
And then others are for like
DallasCowboys1985 vs DallasCowboys42069 where I'd bet they figured just do all DallasCowboys with numbers trailing.
Sifting through it it seems so e might be targeting one user with multiple similar accounts, but others are just totally ham-fisted dumb approaches like mine. Like I probably made the list and some other user 'foggyXYZ' also did. And now 'foggy-sux-we-hate-him' is blocked too. 👍
I'm also on the regex list, but oddly I don't have the trailing $, so if I made an account like, oDojan, that'd not be caught. I'm not alone in not having a $, but a lot of people do.

It's only a real shadowban if it comes from the asimons04 region of tesseract. Otherwise, it's just a sparkling ban.
Get out there and say something insanely polarizing, like, "killing kids isn't cool, y'all."

Maybe something cute about how it's nice that he died doing what he loved; public executions that children should be forced to watch.
Then again, it's been so long since he kirked the bucket, it's kind of nice to just let him remain an unimportant and forgotten thing of the past.

I wonder what earns a place on the regex list versus the other. Did we only medium piss him off?
theolodis@feddit.org · 1 pts · 9d
The regex list is to make sure any possible alt accounts on other instances are also caught
foggy@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 9d
Given some of the regexes are just like
^example.*$
And others are
^example[0-9]+$

theolodis@feddit.org · 2 pts · 9d
I think that's too late, as Tesseract is now resting in peace. But if you want I can block you and a +1
whoisearth@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 10d
It's like a badge of honour in any community that a mod/developer/etc can ban you from their community just for having an opinion.
I stand by what I say the people in charge in a majority of these places are snowflakes.
