Not the Speak & Spell. You leave that one alone.

perishthethought@piefed.social · 23 pts · 2d (1 reply)

They can take my Speak and Spell when they pry it from my cold, dead h. a. n. d.

anomnom@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 1d

Read the letters in that voice. I should look for one of those chips again to play with.

Codpiece@feddit.uk · 7 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Exactly. ET wouldn’t have got home without one.

WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Yeah I also would've noped the fuck out of here as fast as possible, and however possible if I could.

My first encounter with AI.

The_Picard_Maneuver@piefed.world · 14 pts · 2d (6 replies)

What did you play this on? It looks like Atari.

prettybunnys@piefed.social · 12 pts · 2d (4 replies)

Looks like the chess game we had on our old “ibm compatible”

defaultusername@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 10 pts · 2d (3 replies)

That screenshot is specifically from the Atari 2600. You can tell because sprites that are next to each other are offset by one vertical pixel, which was a common effect used to help with hardware limitations.

bss03@infosec.pub · 2 pts · 1d (2 replies)

IIRC, the 2600 didn't have a graphics processor. So, you had to "chase the ray" with CPU instructions, which made for some interesting limitations.

defaultusername@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 1d (1 reply)

It has the TIA, which is as close to a picture processor (and also audio synthesizer) as you can get, but due to the 128 bytes of RAM, there was not enough RAM to form a framebuffer, hence the need to race the beam.

bss03@infosec.pub · 2 pts · 1d

Thanks for the clarification. I was too young to program the 2600. I started programming on PC-compatible.

Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1d

Yes that's the Atari 2600.

I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world · 19 pts · 2d (2 replies)

Teddy Ruxpin did nothing wrong.

db2@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 2d (1 reply)

I see you never played a NIN tape in one.

MonkeMischief@lemmy.today · 3 pts · 2d

Now THAT I gotta see 😂

lagg_mine@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 2d (13 replies)

Where are the furbies

protist@retrofed.com · 26 pts · 2d (12 replies)

Right here

Janx@piefed.social · 9 pts · 2d (8 replies)

It would have cost you nothing to not post this.

Cleary they value more than the mere material currency of this realm.

WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (6 replies)

But not this actual realm.

sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 4 pts · 1d (5 replies)

The woe of mortals is a shared delicacy, some other mortals appreciate it as well.

WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d (4 replies)

Fear is a form of appreciation.

Jokes aside, I don't get the "furby = evil" things. Much like clowns, or Taco Bell giving people diarrhea (present bullshit excluded). Memes gonna meme I guess.

I think it comes from them triggering in the middle of the night, and maybe distortion when the battery gets low.

sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 2 pts · 1d

Did you ever have a furby?

As agameanonymous says... there are many... unsettling quirks about having one long term.

I had one.

Woukdn't stop fucking yammering, clattering its beak, clicking its eyes.

Took it outside, doused it in fire accelerant, burned it till it stopped making noises.

MonkeMischief@lemmy.today · 5 pts · 2d

Oh that's HORRIFYING and DISGUSTING! D:

Is this a Dopapod reference?

farmgineer@nord.pub · 7 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Teddy Ruxpin just moves the mouth in response to sound. There's no AI going on there (at least in the original ones).

moakley@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d

He can also type comments on internet forums, can't you??

JoMiran@lemmy.ml · 7 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Without the Farmer says See N Say we'd never have this great Soundgarden intro.

You'll take my Teddy Ruxpin from my cold dead toddler hands

If you time travel and take out the ENIAC, you likely deprive the US of working nuclear weapons during WW2.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ENIAC

ENIAC was designed by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert to calculate artillery firing tables for the United States Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory (which later became a part of the Army Research Laboratory).[7][8] However, its first program was a study of the feasibility of the thermonuclear weapon.[9][10]

... choose wisely.

Can you predict what would have happened, then?

...are you sure?

While I'm back there, I'll kill Hitler's abusive step-father so he grows up without trauma. Er... Aside from seeing his father killed by a time traveler.
