Based on what I've been seeing lately, we're doing just fine. They should keep them off the shelves.

DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world · 41 pts · 1d

American here, don't give in to the asshole.

TheFeatureCreature@lemmy.ca · 39 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Weak.

T00l_shed@lemmy.world · 17 pts · 1d

We can boycott places that carry American booze

EmilieEasie@fedinsfw.app · 38 pts · 1d (11 replies)

But why

cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca · 20 pts · 1d

But why indeed.

Shadow@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 1d (9 replies)

Unfortunately the death of CUSMA would destroy many Canadian small businesses, my own included. Nobody would buy my product if it suddenly shot up 20%-50% in price, even though there's no American alternative.

I'd rather we keep the fight up, but if we can get some leverage and buy time for US politics to shift, it'll probably be worth it.

kibblebits@quokk.au · 21 pts · 1d (3 replies)

US politics isn’t going to shift. This is just the beginning. You should base your business decisions on that.

Shadow@lemmy.ca · 0 pts · 1d (2 replies)

The political polls seem to disagree with you.

Thankfully it's just a passion side project for me, I'm willing to take the loss and close it down if I need to. Many Canadians aren't so lucky.

kibblebits@quokk.au · 5 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Found the person who thinks polls in the US are real.

eestileib@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 1d

Who thinks there's going to be a non kangaroo election.

CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 1d

It's not about US politics shifting. We're buying time to decouple our economies. If you are waiting for a return to normalcy with the US, you are going to be sorely mistaken.

GrackleBirb@lemmy.ca · 9 pts · 1d

US politics is never shifting back. If I had a business that relied on American suppliers, I would find suppliers in the EU or Asia or find a new line of work.

eestileib@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 1d

Well I pay more to get stuff from Canadian suppliers without using Amazon.

But I'm lucky to have the option to make that choice.

qaeta@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 18h

Problem is the federal government is not in charge of alcohol sales. That is a provincial decision.

EmilieEasie@fedinsfw.app · 1 pts · 1d

Well, I hope the boycotts will continue at least. I know the south west is already hurting from missing Canadian tourism (Vegas native here) and tbh we deserve it.

swordgeek@lemmy.ca · 33 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Albertan here. Despite our government putting US booze back on the shelves a year ago, and despite being the most US-loving, redneck province in the country, US alcohol sales are down about 70% across rhe board.

CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world · 16 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Now if only you didn't vote in fascist traitors.

swordgeek@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 1d

Agreed. Believe me, I've been fighting as hard as I can against the UCP.

And now Kenney is trying to pretend he supports Canadian unity, after a few years away from his dumpster fire.

breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca · 26 pts · 1d (3 replies)

Has there been any comment from provincial governments on this? The alcohol bans aren't federal and the Canadian government really has no say. Keeping the bans in place also appears overwhelmingly popular across the country. Sixty-nine (*high five*) percent are in favour of the bans and the same majority say they won't buy US booze even if the bans are lifted.

aramis87@fedia.io · 12 pts · 1d

I mean, they can put it on the shelf, but you can't force people to buy it.

BurgerBaron@quokk.au · 7 pts · 1d

Quebec said they're not going to lift the bans so far.

CanadianCarl@sh.itjust.works · 7 pts · 1d
Jaysyn@lemmy.world · 23 pts · 1d (4 replies)

Canadians still aren't going to buy it, you dumbasses.

cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca · 11 pts · 1d (2 replies)

Well you and I won't, but I know there are those that will 🥲

FreeBooteR69@lemmy.ca · 5 pts · 1d (1 reply)

74% of Canadians in a poll said they were not likely (69%)or somewhat not likely(5%) to buy American alcohol after lifting of American alcohol ban. The Americans might sell some booze, but nowhere near the levels pre tariffs. How long that holds out could be years.

OldCrow@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 1d

74% were not likely? 69% somewhat not likely? 5% to buy American??? Not high enough!! I still refuse to buy American produce in grocery stores. This is NOT high enough. So, it’s all good now??

DrDickHandler@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 9h

Imagine being this braindead.

SirMaple__@lemmy.ca · 20 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Nope. Not this Canadian. I'm done buying US goods or services.

k0e3@lemmy.ca · 1 pts · 3h

Same here.

I don't live in Canada anymore — and likely won't ever be able to afford to go back with the shit yen here and shit housing situation there — but I still stand by Canada and refuse to buy US products. Luckily, not only is it easy to avoid US brands Japan, but I can even look at whether main ingredients of a product come from the US and avoid those since we have so many choices. If my favourite brand of Japanese chips uses potatoes from the US, they go back on the shelf.

The hardest thing I stopped buying are games though. Not that there are US-made games that I absolutely need to get, but because I don't want to use Steam. Even though they're a pretty good company, I'd still rather not spend money on a US platform willingly. Surprisingly, I got shit on for having this stance in one of the games community on lemmy.ca.

Is it hard to stay away from US goods and services when you live in Canada? All my friends and family hate Trump, but they don't seem to have a hard boycott stance like me and I assumed it's because it's really difficult to do without paying a huge premium.

swordgeek@lemmy.ca · 15 pts · 1d

While this won't make a huge practical difference (can't force people to buy the stuff), capitulating to Trump only lets him take another step forward. He will never concede ground or come to an agreement. He's a bully, and giving him what he wants will never be enough.

kbal@fedia.io · 13 pts · 1d (2 replies)

I guess when you've preemptively announced that you're not going to retaliate against the illegal tariffs in any way that would get their attention, such as putting export duties on petroleum products, you end up with little choice other than to give them whatever they want.

eestileib@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 1d

Carney sucks

CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

Sort of. It sends a message worldwide that you can count on us. Reliable, predictable. A real partner.

ZC3rr0r@piefed.ca · 12 pts · 23h (5 replies)

This might actually be a genius malicious compliance play, seeing how the boycotts of American made goods and alcohol are largely a grassroots movement by the citizens.

Appeasing the US by allowing their alcohol back on the shelves, only for it to largely sit there as unmoving product would definitely be a great way to honour the contract without reducing the impact of the message.

grte@lemmy.ca · 9 pts · 16h (3 replies)

The issue with that is, by the time the US liquor is sitting on the shelf for sale the US producers already got paid. The liquor is first bought by provincial distributors, even in Alberta via the AGLC, and then sold to the public from government stores, or sold to private liquor stores who then sell to the public. So if that US liquor hits the shelf and we boycott it, it's either our provincial governments or local liquor stores that take the hit. That's why the provincial level bans are angering the US liquor industry so much.

ZC3rr0r@piefed.ca · 4 pts · 15h

Huh, TIL I guess. Still, of it doesn't move it's a single one time purchase of some alcohol. Still feels like a hollow "victory" to me.

BCsven@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 14h

They'll make the money on Canadian booze as the USA stuff slowly sells. Alberta already started selling US stuff in June since they are privatized distribution and not provincial--and want to join the USA

Bane_Killgrind@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 3h

Ok

It's not like they will buy more while fully stocked.

kent_eh@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 15h

Appeasing the US by allowing their alcohol back on the shelves

Except that we should have learned by now that trying to appease a country who won't honour their own agreements is pointless.

What guarantees can there be that the US won't just reneg again after we appease them again?

They should have to demonstrate some level of trustworthiness before we even think about backing down.

Spineless banker

Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca · 11 pts · 1d (1 reply)

The gov may lift the ban, and put the bottles back on the shelves; but we're still not buying it.

Elbows up motherfuckers.

/edit: I should also note; each province enacted their own ban. It's not up to the federal government whether we lift the bans, each province would have to agree separately.

Warehouse@piefed.ca · 5 pts · 1d

The Canadian government saying that the ban is lifted is meaningless because they never banned alcohol anyway, as it's not their jurisdiction.

phoenixz@lemmy.ca · 8 pts · 11h (1 reply)

What booze ban?

We Canadians simply fucking refuse to drink (or eat or use, for that matter) American products because the USA is a fucked up third world banana republic

saigot@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 7h

The lcbo, which is one of the world's largest alcohol customers, has not bought American liquor since march 2025.https://www.lcbo.com/content/lcbo/en/corporate-pages/lcbo-response-to-u-s--tariffs--q-a.html

asg101@lemmy.ca · 7 pts · 1d

Bending and spreading is not how you deal with bullies... just saying.

dermanus@lemmy.ca · 6 pts · 18h

Are these the same sources saying they've most got a deal with Iran?

nik282000@lemmy.ca · 4 pts · 2h

Fuck that, wait him out. He leaves office on his feet in 2 years or in a box sometime before.

Making the point that Canada does not take shit from the USA is more important than padding corporate pockets.

ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 5h

Okay but what do we have to do to stop selling in their market and stop their products from entering ours?

melsaskca@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 17h (3 replies)

Their is no official booze ban in Canada. While some products were eventually removed from the shelves this was more a citizens grassroots action, not an official act.

bowreality@lemmy.ca · 10 pts · 17h

There is. But it’s provincial and not in all provinces. Fed gov has no jurisdiction.

SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 12h (1 reply)

No, it will be a grassroots action only if people leave US booze on the shelves.

Typotyper@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 7h

Do you see empty space in the shelves for the US booze. Local stores have no obligation to remove stock and fill it with US stock. Further in Ontario they already have a large catalogue of special order items not stocked in all stores.
