"This would drive up costs to customers" is always fun when it talks about a human component of the cost, because it's pretty transparently saying they're currently relying on worker exploitation.

On the other Hand. Local Retailers could get better and cheaper alternatives again. Or you just use other Online Stores here in Germany Amazon is almost never the cheapest.

I suspected you might be German before you even mentioned the Country because Germans have a common Tell when they write. Please understand I find this cute and delightful and hope you aren't offended. I hopefully have given you no Reason to be. :)

This is perfect, you made my day. I had to read this 5 times until I finally understood the tell. This seems so normal when your native language is German.

I host a forum for an opensource game that's been around since the 90s. The original developer was German, so there is a bit of extra German around, although it's truly international by now. In addition to the capitalization thing, I've noticed that they tend to be… rather direct compared to American culture, which is itself often a little more direct that, say, UK culture. lol.

I ain't reading NYT but if Amazon is against it I just assume I'm for it.

Kagi Ai Summary:
A Fight Brews Between Mamdani and Amazon Over Delivery Workers details the escalating conflict regarding the labor practices of major delivery companies in New York City. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has officially endorsed the Delivery Protection Act, legislation designed to regulate the last-mile operations of corporations like Amazon and FedEx. The proposed measure aims to compel these companies to hire delivery workers directly instead of relying on third-party contractors. Proponents argue that the current subcontracting model allows corporations to bypass essential regulations concerning minimum pay and employee benefits. Mamdani contends that this shift is necessary to ensure accountability and protect both workers and the communities impacted by distribution facilities. However, the bill faces significant opposition from companies like Amazon, who argue that the regulation will increase costs for consumers and cause delays in package deliveries. Critics of the legislation also warn that these rules could force firms to relocate their distribution hubs outside of the city. Such a move would potentially result in the loss of thousands of local jobs. The debate highlights the tension between the modern consumer demand for rapid delivery and the push for stronger labor protections in a gig-dependent economy.

Great read. The workers need to be behind this and stand up too.
Plenty of interference and shilling from Amazon. I hope the legislation passes.

Must be a great proposal then. I don't know what it is, but I am all for it.

Same shit a lot of places do, calling people who do the final stage of delivery contractors instead of employees so they can get away with paying them less and not providing benefits, and if they get in an accident delivering it's on them not the company.
Amazon and other companies argue that if they had to actually claim those employees who only deliver their packages all day as their employees and give them benefits and deal with any insurance issues due to collisions they would have to charge customers more.
Because while they make insane amounts of profit, they will never put that at risk and will instead just pass all costs to the consumers. Because they are soulless parasites who sustain themselves by sucking all money and life force from everyone they can.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 19 pts · 7d
This is such bullshit. There is no reason that it has to cost more for the customer, it only means Amazon makes less profit. Jeff Bezos could simply make slightly less income, and it might mean it will take an extra year or two to reach trillionaire status.
BrickEater@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 7d
Or, alternatively, stop fucking using Amazon and go to the store? Like I don't get how that's a debate.
Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 6d
Folks can have a problem with going out in public.
I get severe anxiety around other people and deal with bipolar episodes.
While I do suck it up, mainly cause money is tight, we shouldn't be grudging the people who aren't strong enough to suck it up.
Some folks aren't built like that. In fact, no one person is built the same. There is and will always be something different about all of us.
Just ask yourself this. Would you want to be forced into a situation where you didn't want to do something because it hurts you mentally? Then, someone wanted to take away the one thing that helped you with that thing? Wouldn't you feel beaten down and like you don't matter?
Is that the world we want for each other? None of us matter to one another? Nobody is important? We're all main characters now, and if I can do it, you can do it to type of people?
Not me brother. I'd much rather live in a world where anything can be delivered to your house if it means folks can live a more peaceful life. All we want is these rich fucks to not be so goddamn evil.

In NYC, Whole Foods is much cheaper than retail.
Evotech@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 7d
Does each household order 100 packages a year? Damn
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 6d
In NYC, many people use Amazon's Whole Foods Delivery. It's a LOT cheaper than Trade Fair or Key Foods, and they bring it right to your house. So 100 deliveries a year is every 3-4 days, not that weird.

Mandani is just straight up doing what every single city, state and what the Fed itself would do if it cared more about the people than enriching investors and friends. It becomes extremely clear when you see him passing little laws like this what capitalists have been doing to regular people while creating a new ruling class of billionaires.
BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 10 pts · 7d
After years of politicians telling us everything is totally impossible, it turns out there's this button on the Mayor's desk that says Do Something Good, and when you press it, something good happens. So Mamdani just keeps pressing it.
That button has always been on that desk, and it's been on the desks of every politician, forever. So why haven't they been pressing it?

Good. Hope it gives them a stroke.

Just as an FYI, your post has been reported. I'm going to leave it up since the active harm you wish upon soulless corporate ghouls is not a call to violence, but more of a desire for karmic justice. Cheers,

Why is no ones first thought, fine I'll just stop using Amazon? Is everyone so addicted to bezos' teat that they can't imagine going to the store?
mojo_raisin@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 6d
Amazon has done much to eliminate it's competition. We used to have Radio Shack, Fry's, and Toys R Us, and Barnes & Noble, lost of small businesses, etc, now most or all of that is gone and we have Amazon, Wal-mart or other similarly bad company, and a few random small business that might not fit your needs.
Sometimes when I have tried to avoid Amazon by going directly to the company, I find that they sell through Amazon anyways. Amazon needs to be split up by the government. These companies have intentionally made themselves too big and diverse to effectively boycott.
ooo_shiny@lemmy.nz · 2 pts · 6d
I don’t use Amazon anymore. I don’t live in the US so maybe that makes it easier.
