There is speculation that the now sitting president conspired with the US to kidnap Maduro in exchange for US support. Which may explain why the kidnapping was clinically precise.
Venezuela is now a US resource colony. The Venezuelan people won't even see 1% of the wealth being extracted from under their feet. This is what they're trying to do to Canada as well.

What? The US has zero problem refining it. Most US refineries, particularly in the Gulf, are actually set up for heavy sour crude like Venezuelan.
That's kind of the issue. The US mostly produces light sweet crude, but our refineries are mostly set up for sour crude. So, while we are a net oil exporter, we have to import most of our oil to actually refine it because we aren't set up to refine our own production.
This "deal" is explicitly a gift to US refineries who are going to make unfathomable fortunes from it. He is trying to keep them on his side to throw their weight around for midterms and beyond.
Minor problem with sucking the slurry out of the Earth. No problem! I just found a billion tons of titanium on the moon. Titanium tooling should be pretty effective at high temperature.

It's fun to say, actually kind of true now. Except state control is subordinate the connected wealthy. For now. Those connected wealthy will be destroyed by their political monster in time. But that's neither here nor there.
