I never understood why everyone here is so obsessed with gas prices. Like driving out of your way to save 5c/gal.. Maybe it's because I don't commute in a massive Chevy APC type truck/suv.
Largely it's because public transit basically doesn't exist once you get outside cities that have a population of at least 750k - 1mil. So the price of gas going up increases the price of everything you do because the only feasible/safe option is to drive yourself everywhere.
My point is the difference is trivial. 20 gallon tank, you drive out of the way because that station sells gas 5c cheaper. Congrats, you've saved a dollar and burned more gas.
Yes that is exactly why. America is almost completely reliant on cars for transportation, due to suburban sprawl commutes are often an hour+ both ways, and many Americans are at or over budget already and so are very sensitive to relatively small transportation price increases.
I'm so happy for them to suffer their consequences of their vote, though I know in my heart of hearts CA is only lowest because we tax our gas and the raw increase is less a % as a result.
Fun fact, most of US doesn't even use middle east gas, this is just market forces pushing prices up due to scarcity. I bet oil people are getting quite rich off these war crimes.
This makes it seem that red states are being hit hardest on this which doesn't seem like that should play as large of a role in gas prices as, say, infrastructure.
Am I seeing a false pattern? Or is there a set of policy measures that blue states have implemented that red states haven't to prevent gas price spikes?
Don't want to share anything identifiable, but I get semi-regular updates on things in 3 parts of the US. So anecdotally speaking, the chart lines up almost perfectly with what I'm seeing across those areas. Before the war, there was maybe a 5-10% ($2.50 in Republican vs $2.75 in Democrat) spread in gas costs, but now its almost 30% spread ($4.25 in republican vs $3.25 in democrat).
Both a flat $1 increase. The large differences in nationwide gas prices don't really apply to the increase we are feeling from the Iran war. The price is basically increasing flat across the board because the other differences are remaining constant but the cost of a barrel is still increasing by the same amount everywhere.
My 2 cents though. Someone feel free to tell me I'm wrong.
Good map of which states the actual gas price is more/less inflated by taxes and other costs. Cali has some of the highest prices but the actual gas price doesn't affect the percentage as much because of all the other hidden costs built in by the state taxes and regulations.
As far as I remember, West coast gas prices have been higher than a lot of places to the east.
If you have a $4.50 baseline on the West Coast and $3.50 somewhere in the middle, a flat $0.50 increase is going to measure as a higher percentage change in the middle compared to the west.

$2 a gallon. 50% increase means $3 a gallon.
$4 a gallon 25% increase means $5 a gallon.

Its percent difference. If you add a buck across the board (arbitrary number) the price increase percentage is higher if you started off lower.

As far as I remember, West coast gas prices have been higher than a lot of places to the east.
If you have a $4.50 baseline on the West Coast and $3.50 somewhere in the middle, a flat $0.50 increase is going to measure as a higher percentage change in the middle compared to the west.

Out here in IB, CA, US, gas runs between $5.59 to $5.99 for regular and premium, and diesel is $6.99
