Cool to see that at least 3 of the English names of these are Native American in origin

Rhaedas@fedia.io · 18 pts · 14h (1 reply)

Why is it original names are always better than the changed ones?

And Winnebago, the "small" one east of Lake Michigan, means "stinky water" in Ojibwe.

Yeah, that checks out.

Maybe you just need to clean your RV's pipes tanks...

myyass@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 13h

I read all off these with the way I read Japanese lol

I mean, did all the First Nations people share these names? I don't think that's the case, so if by "real names" you mean the First Nations names for them, I think they had multiple names depending on who you asked.

What about whatever they were called before the people that called them that killed the guys that called it whatever it was called before?

homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 15h (1 reply)

I think that was an asteroid.

Do you think humans coincidentally started writing down history and having wars at the exact same moment? Repeatedly? Consistently? Across the globe?

Or is it more reasonable to assume that there were wars before recorded history?

hakase@lemmy.zip · -6 pts · 13h

Exactly. Not to mention that all names are equally arbitrary (except for onomatopoeia, arguably, but I don't think that's relevant here), so none are more "real" (whatever that means) than any other.

The indigenous people around Huron named it "the fresh water sea"... bullshit how would they know what non freshwater sea was?

GloriousGasHole@piefed.social · 7 pts · 11h (1 reply)

Probably the giant river that goes all the way to a non freshwater sea?

Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 1h

People transferred or married into tribes occasionally and there was trade. If you were Huron you probably traded with Iroquois and if you were Fox you probably occasionally traded with Wampanaog and Lenovo which were on the eastern sea board.

I usually just assume Aboriginal Peoples weren't fucking stupid, but you do you.

I appreciate comments like this sometimes because it makes me look up and read something I wouldn’t have otherwise
